PC crashes when I use Ewido scan

Unread postby CTN » October 4th, 2005, 3:39 pm

Greetings everyone,
After some very helpful advice from a gent on another forum, I cleaned a lot of rubbish from my PC using Adaware, spybot, bitdefender, stinger etc. I was then advised to use Ewido and Ccleaner for further scans and the PC just crashed and restarted after approx 10 secs into each scan. When I posted this back I was directed via link to " How to configure system failure and recovery options in windows" ( microsoft ) I'm sorry to say it was all above my head, and I'm at a loss as to what to do. PC seems to be working fine otherwise, but there's obviously something not right. Latest HJT log below if somebody would be kind enough to have a look. Fantastic website by the way

CTN,
Welcome to the forum.
There is actually quite a lot going on here.
First, you have two AV's running at the same time. It looks like you have adopted TrendMicro Security suite as your main protection.
If that's true, you need to Uninstall McAfee Antivirus and McAfee Firewall. Two AVs and two firewalls can reduce protection and cause system trouble.
If my assumption is correct, go to Add/remove Programs and remove all McAfee items.
If McAfee is the one you wish to keep, Uninstall all the TrendMicro applications except the Anti-Spyware.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable SpywareGuard
- Right Click the running icon of Spywareguard to open the program.
- Then go to Menu, File, Exit.
- Confirm the program is closed.
(Reverse this process after your malware removal is complete).
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect before running HJT.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. In addition, if you have Windows XP, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cpds] C:\WINDOWS\cpds.exe

O4 - Global Startup: BlueSoleil.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: LG SyncManager.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = D:\New Folder\Office\OSA9.EXE
O16 - DPF: {5F0C30E4-1E72-4DCC-85E5-57810F1CA97B} (McUpdatePortalFactory Class) - https://mysupport.nai.com/amiuptodate/b ... Portal.cab

O16 - DPF: {FF65677A-8977-48CA-916A-DFF81B037DF3} - http://download.overpro.com/WildAppNonUS.cab

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
File and Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to these files. Use Find (F3) or Start, Search if the folder is not shown; then Delete these files, if present:
C:\documents and settings\craig\local settings\temp\m.exe
C:\documents and settings\craig\local settings\temp\GPBgR.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cpds.exe
C:\WINDOWS\scrbmk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\languard.exe

If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any file you cannot delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder. In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish. Please paste the contents into your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with uninstall_list.txt.
Please do not use Word Wrap when you paste in the reply.

Hello askey127

Thanks for the reply. I'm running trend micro, I've tried to remove McAfee in the past but it wouldn't uninstall, so I went about deleting all files manually. I've just done a search and there's still some stuff left, would it be ok to delete it all from the search?

CTN,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start,Settings,Control Panel or Start,Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight the following entries, one by one, if they exist, and choose Remove :
You can get a new screensaver after we're done. This one comes from a website on Eric Howes' IE-spyad list.
3D Windows XP Screensaver
Take extra care in answering any questions posed by an Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into choosing to keep the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop, Disable and Delete A Service
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find the service. The service name is the item in Parentheses in the O23 line.
mcupdmgr.exe
Click once on the service to highlight it. Click Stop
Right-Click on the service. Click onProperties
Select the General tab. Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Delete the Service
Open HiJackThis. Click on Config, Misc Tools, Delete an NT Service
Type mcupdmgr.exe in the space provided (the name in parentheses in the O23 line) and click OK
The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept.
REBOOT into SAFE MODE
Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as the machine boots, until a menu shows up. Choose Safe Mode from the list. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Extra instructions are here if you need them.

Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):
C:\PROGRAM FILES\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdmgr.exe
REBOOT back into Normal Mode
-----------------------------------------------------------
Now we will do the same thing again with the O23 - Service: McAfee Personal Firewall Service (MpfService) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MPFSERVICE.exe (file missing)
Stop, Disable and Delete A Service
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find the service. The service name is the item in Parentheses in the O23 line.
MpfService
Click once on the service to highlight it. Click Stop
Right-Click on the service. Click onProperties
Select the General tab. Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Delete the Service
Open HiJackThis. Click on Config, Misc Tools, Delete an NT Service
Type MpfService in the space provided (the name in parentheses in the O23 line) and click OK
The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept.
REBOOT into SAFE MODE
Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):
C:\PROGRAM FILES\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MPFSERVICE.exe <== find the folder represented by PERSON~1 and delete the file
REBOOT back into Normal Mode
-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer, Find and Delete this folder(s), if present:
C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\
Note if you cannot delete.
You may have to delete all the underlying files and folders before a target folder can be deleted.
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any file you cannot delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply. Please do not use Word Wrap when you paste in the reply. (Word Wrap is a check mark under "Format" in Notepad. If checked, it breaks up long lines and makes logs harder to read).

Let me know how it goes.

CTN,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. In addition, if you have Windows XP, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run CCleaner.
Click on Options, Select Advanced. Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected. (Do not use the "Issues" block) Choose the Windows tab.
Check everything EXCEPT cookies, the Autocomplete Form History and the Advanced part of the Menu.
Choose Run Cleaner. This process could take a while.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------
From My Computer, go to C:\Windows\Prefetch\
Delete all the files in the Prefetch folder. DO NOT delete the Prefetch folder itself.

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential protection procedures.
Please let me know.

Hello Askey127

I have followed your instructions again, but the PC still crashes when I click on "Run Cleaner" after about 1 second. Tried it 3 times with the same outcome. Here is the error log that I got when it rebooted. I don't know if it means anything to you.

CTN,

I'm checking in Room 02 for any similar experiences.
We may want to run a rootkit detector if nothing else shows up.

Be back soon.

CTN,

Reboot into Safe Mode, and run CCleaner from there.
If that completes, run Ewido from safe mode also, tell it to save a log file, and post it.
Let me know.

Hi there
I've tried Ccleaner and ewido in safe mode, with the same outcome, although it lasted 10 seconds before it gave up this time.
I ran Xoftspy and it gave these results. Roughly like this (it wouldn't copy and paste to wordpad)

Troj_DLOAD.A registry key bridgex.installer
Troj_DLOAD.A registry key software\classes\bridgex.installer

Adware.Starware registry key software\classes\clsid\{2d52d869-c36b ETC (6 of these in various ways)

IBIS/Hunt Toolbar Registry value Data Miner software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\installer\userdata\TUID

Adware.Starware registry key software\ms\inetrnetexplorer\toolbar\{D49E9D ETC}

I hope this was of some help.

CTN,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start,Settings,Control Panel or Start,Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight the following entries, one by one, if they exist, and choose Remove :
Starware
Take extra care in answering any questions posed by the uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into choosing to keep the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Starware - {D49E9D35-254C-4c6a-9D17-95018D228FF5} - C:\Program Files\Starware\bin\Starware.dll
Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run CCleaner in Normal mode. After it crashes, go into
Start, Control Panel, Adminstrative Tools, Event Viewer, Application
Double click any events from CCleaner and highlight/paste the information text from it/them into a reply.

Then go into Event Viewer again, choose System, and double-click; then highlight/paste any very recent Event text relating to stop, Events 1001/1003?

CTN,

This may be hardware related, but let's check for possible rootkit infection first.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download F-Secure's trial Blacklight program :
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Print out the help page for guidance.
Ok the license.
Check scan through Windows Explorer
Click Scan
When animated graphics disappears, click Next
Note any files and their locations that appear in the output summary, and let me know in a reply what they are.
