welcome to malwareremoval forums

My name is Dan, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

Hi, Dave,

Optional - VIEWPOINT MANAGER
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
Additional info:Here
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
Your call.

___________________

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint.
Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player.
The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information.
CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.'

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

please post back with: text file and a new highjackthis log.

Also - don't know if this helps but I am pretty sure I got this problem when I stupidly agreed to run an activeX from a website.

Hi Dan,

I think I have correctly finished all the steps in your last post. But, I don't have the results of the OtMoveIt. There was a brief statement there - 3 lines of text maybe, but I think I copied another log before I remembered to paste that one here. It's not obvious to me how to recover that. If you know how, tell me and I'll post that next.

Hope that doesn't screw you up too much. Here is the other info:

I found a file in MovedFiles folder on my pc but cannot seem to open it. It says it is a RES file titled 04292008_191437

Would that have the results of the OTMoveIt ?

Look for the one that says "log" with the same number as the res.04292008_191437
when you use otmoveit when you click on moveit ,there is a screen to the right that will display the report, all you have to do is copy and paste it into the thread!

I found a text file from OTMoveIt with the following:

File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\kol.dll not found.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.1 log created on 04292008_191437

I think that's what the results box showed but I'm not 100% certain of this.

Yep, that's the one :)

What about your xp updates do you have updates set for automatic download?
As you need to keep on top of these. Unless you didn't include them in the Install list!

Update Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Your JRE is out of date. The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs. Locate Java(TM) 6 Update 5 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  2. Repeat for these old versions of JRE:
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
      Java(TM) 6 Update 2
      Java(TM) 6 Update 3
      Java(TM) 6 Update 5
      Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
  3. Click here to visit Java's website.
  4. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. Click on Download.
  5. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  6. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  7. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  8. Click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  9. Run this installation to update your Java.

post a fresh HJT log when done

On my control panel Automatic Updates scheduled daily is checked. I had assumed this covered the XP updates - did I assume wrong?

Hi, log is looking good.
Pleased to hear popup has stoped.
Can I see a further Installed Programs List as I'm seeing an older java version still, just want to check it out.

Go to control panel add and remove and make sure there is a check mark in show updates box.

Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
