System infected with a dangerous virus

Hi, Keep getting a pop-up telling me that my system is infected. Also when performing searches in IE.. fake results return for every search and are directing me to a site... malwarebell. I have been reading a few of the posts and have installed some of the software suggested but to no avail. I have also run hijackthis.... log below...

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Hi

You are running HijackThis from a temporary folder. Some of the tools we use automatically clean out the Temp folders, so you will lose not only HijackThis but also the backups of anything we fix.

• Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
• Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
• Click on Install.
• It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
• Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
• Close HijackThis for the moment.

Which version of Spybot Search & Destroy are you running? The latest is 1.5, and I advise you remove the older version and install the latest by clicking on the link below.

Delete the older versions of Java and download the newest.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

1. Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
2. Click Start > Control Panel.
3. Click Add/Remove Programs.
4. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
5. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
6. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
7. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (5th one down the list), which is JRE6u6, and click Yes at the page warning. Under "Platform" select Windows, then check the box to accept the Licence Agreement. Click Yes at the second page warning before downloading the Offline file.
There is no need to download the Sun Download manager but it is optional.


Open Notepad and copy/paste the contents of the box below into it.

Download and Run BFU
Download and unzip BFU.zip from here.

Open the BFU folder and double-click the icon to run it.

Where it says "scriptfile to run" click on the folder icon and browse to the bfu file you just created, and select that. Then ensure the "Use settings specified in script for above options" and "Show log after script ends" boxes are both checked.

Execute the script by clicking the Execute button.

Then reboot and post a new HijackThis log.

No point re-running it, that would leave us with an empty logfile. Did BFU not save a textfile anywhere, such on your Desktop, or on Local Drive C?
Have the malwarebell symptoms gone?

Hi Scotty,
The malwarebell pop-up is still .. popping up... every time I open a new window or webpage... sometimes for every component on a webpage.
Spybot seems to have fixed the problem with internet explorer searches.. but there has been no change with the pop-up. I did see a text file from BFU... but I dont think I saved it... sorry!!.. what now?

Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

cmd /c dir C:\*.* /A /B >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A file called look.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.


If you already have Combofix, please delete that copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

There is a tutorial on the basic use of Combofix here:

Please download Combofix from Bleeping Computer.

If you can't download it from there, please try these 2 alternative sites:

• Save it to your Desktop.
• Disconnect from the Internet.
• Click on this LINK to disable
• Click Start>Run copy/paste or type "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall into the Run box and click OK.
• When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
