Hello Eto,

I will be assisting you with your malware issues.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any question or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you are using Windows Vista you must right click on the desktop icon and choose Run as Administrator all tools.
----------------------------------------------
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt .
----------------------------------------------
Before you post a new HijackThis log i want you to rename it, see my instructions below:

RENAME HIJACKTHIS

There is some infection hiding in your log.

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to scanner.exe and post back a new Hijackthis log.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
Combofix report.
A new (renamed) HijackThis log.

Hello Eto,

Thanks for the reports. I am checking them now, and i need some information from you.

d:\Documents and Settings\rguenthe << Is rguenthe your user name on this pc?
What is d: ?
Some infection was found on d: so i would like to know if it's a portable device.

Is your Symantec Antivirus Active or expired?
Is your Zone Alarm active? Or did you shut it down due to the infections?

Hi Chryssi2001,

To the best of my abilities, here's the answers to your queries:

1. rguenthe is my user name on that computer.
2. d: is a partition of the disk drive.
3. Symantec Antivirus appears to be active (i.e. it complained about viruses it found, tried to remove them and would upload new updates when requested) although it is currently shutdown due to me running ComboFix
4. Zone alarm has not expired if that's what you want to know, although it is not currently running and appears to have been shut down before the infections (not sure how long as my wife has been using this computer, and I have been doing a very poor job of making sure the security programs were running properly)

I hope that helps, and let me know if you need anything else. Thanks.

Sincerely,
Eto

Hello Eto :) ,

Thanks for the information.

Just be sure that when you are surfing the Internet both Anti-Virus and Firewall should be active to protect you.
I know you disabled Symantec to run Combofix, that's ok.
----------------------------------------------
COMBOFIX-Script
  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Post back:

A new HijackThis log.
Is the pc running better?

Hello Eto :),

Very good work  .
Now let's continue, almost finished.
----------------------------------------------
Disable MS Defender until the computer is clean
Microsoft Defender normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

- Open Windows Defender
- Select Tools and then General Settings
- Under Real Time Protection Options uncheck Turn on real-time protection
- Select Save
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
Optional fix

Have a read here

FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\3.0.1225.9868\swg.dll << Optional
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {5F1ABCDB-A875-46c1-8345-B72A4567E486} - (no file)

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
If you decided to remove the Optional line, please follow this step to remove the folder too:

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following Folder:

C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier

Right-click and delete it.
----------------------------------------------
Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 8.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 8 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
----------------------------------------------
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.

Hello Eto :) ,

Yes Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware removed a lot of stuff. :)
Most of them are in Combofix Quarantee folder, and System restore.
We'll create a new restore point which will remove all the infected System restore points, and also remove Combofix with all it's components.

You can keep Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and use it to scan occassionally your pc.
It is a very good scanner.

Enable your protection programs now! and remember to have always your firewall ON. ;)
----------------------------------------------
Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Image
The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.
----------------------------------------------
Congratulations you are clean!

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.
(Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing)

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
Find here changes from older version 1.4 here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!
