I am using Windows XP SP2 not Vista. Can you tell me how I post my log if not as an attachment? I have attached the log using the 'add the file' button. Let me know if I need to do anything else.
Thanks and I will continue to reply to your thread as requested.

Hello sukey22,

I suppose you have HijackThis saved on your desktop.
This is the way to do it.
INSTRUCTIONS:
  • Right-click on it and open it using notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and click on reply, and paste the log.
NOTE
You will need these instructions to post any new HijackThis log and reports i will ask.
(*All reports open in Notepad after they are finished.)

I will post it for you now. How i will do it?
I just click on the attachment, and click Open.
Then i just follow the above instructions.
-----------------------------------------------
So here is your log.

Re: hijackthis log

Unread postby sukey22 » April 21st, 2008, 4:32 pm

Main problems have been machine running very slow and programs often being closed by Windows because of a detected error. Often I cannot open Outlook and have to re-boot the system in order to open the program again. Also on shutting down the task manager tell me that I have an instance of Outlook open. I have now upgraded to Office Pro 2007 and it has not done this again but my machine still runs very slowly. The other program I have the most trouble with is PaperPort which is a document management and imaging centre. I often encounter loading errors with this program. I am not sure if my problems relate to malware or just conflicts within my system.

Hello sukey22,

Main problems have been machine running very slow and programs often being closed by Windows because of a detected error.

What is that error says?

The other program I have the most trouble with is PaperPort which is a document management and imaging centre. I often encounter loading errors with this program.

Did you try uninstalling re-installing the program?

As far as your pc being slow, we can disable some applications from start-up to make your pc faster.

I see you have Norton installed including a Firewall. So i suppose it's Norton Security Suite. Do you have also an older version of Symantec installed which you didn't remove?

I can't see malware in your log. Let's update your Java, and run a scanner to see if there is something there which doesn't show.
----------------------------------------------
LIST OF PROGRAMS USING HIJACKTHIS
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply.
See in this link details.
http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg
----------------------------------------------
Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 6.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and click on Download button.

Re: hijackthis log

Unread postby sukey22 » April 22nd, 2008, 4:15 pm

Ok, to answer your questions first. I have not uninstalled and reinstalled the program as I am never sure that doing this will not cause more problems and I do not currently have the CD to hand. It is in storage at the moment.

I have removed all old Java and re-installed new version. I have Norton Antivirus on my system v12.2.0.13 and Live Update
v3.00.160. I do not have a Norton Internet Security suite although when I bought my laptop it came with a trial version.

I have attached all the logs you wanted below. Thanks for your help.

Hello sukey22,

Your HijackThis log is clean.
You can fix some applications not to run from start-up including PaperPort, and see if your pc runs faster.
----------------------------------------------
Optional fix. Have a read > here <
O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\3.0.1225.9868\swg.dll

FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\3.0.1225.9868\swg.dll
<< Optional

These are meant to be fixed to make your pc runs faster.
You can start the programs mannually.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cpqset] C:\Program Files\HPQ\Default Settings\cpqset.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSBkgdUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe" -Embedding -boot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PaperPort PTD] C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\pptd40nt.exe << PaperPort
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IndexSearch] C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\IndexSearch.exe << PaperPort
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SetDefPrt] C:\Program Files\Brother\Brmfl04b\BrStDvPt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Uniblue RegistryBooster 2] C:\Program Files\Uniblue\RegistryBooster 2\RegistryBooster.exe /S

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.

Is your Symantec Firewall active? If yes ignore this post.

FIREWALL
Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. It's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.
Vista users, must check compatibility with Vista before installation.

FREE FIREWALLS
Tutorial about Firewalls can be found here
----------------------------------------------
Let the pc run for 2-3 days after you fix those lines, so the programs will not start from start-up and see if it runs faster.

Now regarding Papersoft, check if there is a repair function in Add/Remove programs and try to repair it. If that doesn't work, uninstalling re-installing when you have the CD available might solve the problem.
----------------------------------------------
For general slowness, see here.
----------------------------------------------
Post back to let me know how it goes.

I have fixed the suggested items with HijackThis and my pc is running faster now, thank you. I have also downloaded the Sunbelt Kerio firewall as I do not have the Symantec Firewall. I do not like Norton, can you suggest another antivirus progam that will work well with my firewall? The Malware that you asked me to run did pick up 3 infected items on my system and the program fixed those and so I hope things run smoothly now.

Thanks for all your help and I will let you know how things are still running after a couple of days.

Nice to hear it :) Since you now have a new Firewall DO NOT FORGET to disable Windows Firewall.
I do not like Norton, can you suggest another antivirus progam that will work well with my firewall? The Malware that you asked me to run did pick up 3 infected items on my system and the program fixed those and so I hope things run smoothly now.

I will give you some links for free Anti-Virus and some more information.
Thanks for all your help and I will let you know how things are still running after a couple of days.

You are welcome! :) Please let me know not later than 2-3 days.

INSTALLING & RUNNING AN ANTIVIRUS

Please follow below details regarding to Antivirus installation-see my post below:
  • download the installer
  • disconnect from internet
  • remove old one << see post below how to remove Norton

  • reconnect, immediately update, and
  • run the Anti-virus and let it quarantine all its findings.
----------------------------------------------
REMOVE NORTON

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool for your own version.
----------------------------------------------
Congratulations you are clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP or Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

or

Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.
(Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing)

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
Find here changes from older version 1.4 here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!

Hello
I have chosen Eset Antivirus to run with my Sunbelt Personal Firewall. I also still have the Malwarebytes Anti Malware Software on my system. Are these all compatible?

I uninstalled the Norton product using the 'add/remove programs' feature within the control panel in Windows XP and then installed the new Antivirus program. Should I do anything else to get rid of any remaining Norton files?

Also the Malwarebytes program quarantined some items. Do I just leave them in quarantine or do I repair them?

The new Antivirus program did not find any infected files but did find many files such as
C:\hiberfil.sys - error opening
C:\pagefile.sys - error opening, and many others like this.
Any suggestions?http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/posting.php?mode=reply&f=11&t=29707#

Hello sukey22,

I have chosen Eset Antivirus to run with my Sunbelt Personal Firewall. I also still have the Malwarebytes Anti Malware Software on my system. Are these all compatible?

Did you download Eset Antivirus free trial? If you decide not to buy it, you will have to install another one after it expires, and remove Eset.

Yes they are compatible. But if you feel you don't like it, you can try another one.
If you try another Anti-Virus it may not give you the errors you described. Try it for a couple of days, and then decide.

I uninstalled the Norton product using the 'add/remove programs' feature within the control panel in Windows XP and then installed the new Antivirus program. Should I do anything else to get rid of any remaining Norton files?

Use the link i posted in my previous post to fully uninstall Norton, as most of the times some files are left behind.

Also the Malwarebytes program quarantined some items. Do I just leave them in quarantine or do I repair them?

You always empty quarantine. Did you run it again and find new items or are those the ones it found when you posted the report here?
I forgot to mention, that Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a very good scanner and keep it to scan occassionally your pc.

The new Antivirus program did not find any infected files but did find many files such as
C:\hiberfil.sys - error opening
C:\pagefile.sys - error opening, and many others like this.

Those 2 files are legit system files, and i believe the reason they can't open is because they are hidden to prevent any user from gaining access to and reading, or alter them.

So is the pc running ok? If yes i can close this topic. :)

Okay I will try the Eset product and see if I like it. If I do I will probably purchase it. I have used the Norton Removal tool and my system has improved in terms of speed.

I have not run the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware progam again but will do so occasionally as you suggest. The files that are quarantined are the original ones that it found. I will delete them as you say.

My pc is running much better now. Thank you for your help and you can now close the post. I will be sending a small donation for the help that you have given. Thank you again.
