All open IE7 windows close suddenly...Hijackthis log posted

Unread postby mak_20789 » April 3rd, 2008, 5:06 am

Hi ,
My problem is IE7 windows all get closed suddenly...and this happened twice..once yestarday and once today. They just vanish. Normally, when there is some problem I get message from windows saying windows is checking for solution. But here nothing happens, just all the open IE7 windows get closed. Other windows like notepad are not affected.I am giving my hijackthis log. Just yesterday I installed free version of AVG antispyware and downloaded and installed yahoo messenger.I think it happened once before yahoo messenger installation, but I am not sure. Also norton blocked a virus called downloader a couple of days back.
Thank you.

Hi mak_20789, Welcome to Malware Removal!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. Please note that I am still in training here at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

I am sorry that there has been such a delay in getting to your log.

If you still need assistance, please do the following:

Step #1: Please post a new Hijack This Log

  • Launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Step #2: Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi mak_20789,

I really don't see any signs of malware in your log. One question for you however, are you running on a Dial-up Connection in India? You have some indications in your log that you are on an ISP in India, and I just want to make sure this is correct.

Step 1: Update Java
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
  • Note: If you don't want the Google toolbar, make sure you uncheck the option included in the installer!

Step 2: Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

In your next reply, please post the contents of the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken,
you are correct, I was using a dial-up connection and I am from India.I say "I was", because that was when I posted hijackthis log. I was using a USB wireless modem by a company called Tata Indicom. Presently, I am using ADSL connection through my phone line with a maximum speed of 256 KBps ( I dont remember if its B or b). It took me some 8 minutes to download the 15.1 MB Java file.
As per your instructions, I installed Java after removing the earlier Java version.
Then I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
A log was automatically generated after I clicked OK.I am posting it here.
However, I couldnt see " Show Results" anywhere.
So I couldnt do the "Remove Selected" step.
I do see "Remove" and "Remove all" options under the "Logs" tab, but I didnt use it.
The Interface is still on my desktop. Please tell me what to do.
Thank you.

Hi mak_20789,

Just to make sure I am not missing anything, lets do a Kaspersky Scan:

Step #1 Run Kaspersky Online Scan

With the exception of Internet Explorer, which must be used for this scan, keep ALL programs closed
Please do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the licence accepted, reset to 100%.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Click the Save Report As... button (see red arrow below)

    Image
  • In the Save as... prompt, select Desktop
  • In the File name box, name the file KasScan-ddmmyy (or similar)
  • In the Save as type prompt, select Text file (see below)

    Image
  • Copy and paste the report in your next post.
Note: It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware application you use.

In your next reply, please post the contents of the Kaspersky Online Scan.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken,
I am very sorry I couldnt post in time.
I ran kaspersky online scanner as per your instructions, and here is what happened.

1) I have NIS 2008 and I disabled auto-protect and spyware protection. Firewall an intrusion prevention were on.

2) The scan went till 45% and internet connection got disconnected. I didnt reconnect.

3)The scan reached around 52% in some 45 minutes and then it suddenly got completed with no infections detected.

4) I tried to save the result file, but I got message that for computers security the file has been saved to Temporary Internet Files Folder.
It happened twice so i gave up and opened that folder but the file was not there. (3) and (4) happen everytime I scan with Kaspersky online scanner.

I am also having a slight confusion here - i.e. after you download the updates for scanner , does it matter if you are connected to internet or not while the scan is going on?

Thank you.

Hi Mak,

I am sorry you had problems with the Kaspersky scan. I don't think that it should matter once the updates are downloaded whether or not you stay connected. The key is that no infections were found. Are you still having troubles? How is your system running? Let me know if you are still having troubles, and please explain them if you are.

Thanks,
Ken

This happens every time I scan with Kaspersky...it reaches some 52-53 % and the suddenly says scan is complete. I will see if they accept mails for free online scans and report it to them.
Regarding my system,it is running OK now. IE hasnt quit in last few days.

Thank you.

Congratulations mak_20789, Your system appears to be clean! Image

Now that you are clean, I got some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (like removing dangerous tools and Windows Update) have to be done, the others are option (beginning with Spybot S &D).

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound/outbound not sure). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
Comodo
Kerio
ZoneAlarm

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Tutorail for Spybot S & D

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. You can download it here:
SpywareBlaster

Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:
WinPatrol
The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.

Install MVPS HOSTS - This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial here:
WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
Firefox << Most used, I use this one myself.
Opera

Bookmark general cleanup links - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (so now bookmark) these links for tips & tricks:
Help! My computer is slow
Slow Computer? Check here first; it may not be malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.[/list]
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
