Hi,

I'm a new boy just starting to learn at your online university. Please could you help with the problem below. I hope I have followed the right process and posted the right information.

My friend's laptop has been suffering from Lop and other problems for some time and I have not been able to fix it. (Trying to fix it is what led me to find yourselves and inspired me to try to learn more about this subject).

Symptoms include Casinos online, find a date, my antivirus software and cellphone ringtones appearing as desktop icons. A search bar covering the start menu when using IE (he got around this by using firefox instead).

I've spent quite some time using your recommenced tools today with the following effect. At first Ad-aware was finding a Lop process running each time after a reboot even though it removed Lop. Each process had a different name. I had 5 goes at this with Ad-aware and gave up. After having run most of the online scanners that you recommend Ad-aware did ot find Lop when run the last time. However, the synaptics scanner still shows quite a lot of infection. Here is the last output from the scanner:

Hello johnmw and welcome to the forum.

Before we go any further:
I did notice that you already did ask / receive assistance here:
http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showfla ... n/0/page/0

Please limit your requests to one single forum, most of the HijackThis helpers are active on different forums and asking for assistance in different places will be confusing and a waste of time for the person that is helping you.

If you still need assistance with your problem, please observe the following rules:
  • Limit yourself to one forum.
  • Follow the instructions provided, limit internet access on the infected PC untill it is cleaned up.
  • If you don't understand something, stop and ask.
Please perform the tasks below if you still need help.
______________________________

Run HijackThis, click on Open the Misc Tools Section, click on Open Uninstall Manager. Click on Save List and save uninstall_list.txt to your Desktop. Open this file in Notepad and copy/past the content in your reply.
______________________________

Please perform the following if your computer has multiple user accounts otherwise skip to Enumerating Scheduled Tasks below.

Post a HJT log from each user account please - one per post, all as a reply here. Please state which ones have admin privilages. Number or name them so you and I will know which one we are talking about.

How to create multiple logs

Log in on the account alsly and run HijackThis. Post the log and let me know if that account has admin privs. Log off and Log in on another account without rebooting if possible and run HijackThis form that account. Repeat for each account present on the computer. Let me know for each account if the user has admin priviledges.
______________________________

Enumerating Scheduled Tasks

Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document.

@ECHO OFF
dir %Windir%\tasks /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt
del /q files.txt

Save it to your Desktop as findjobs.bat. Save it as:
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: findjobs.bat

Locate findjobs.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply. When you close Notepad the CMD window will close automatically and the text file will be deleted.
______________________________

Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document.

regedit /e startup.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg"
notepad startup.txt
del /q startup.txt

Save it to your Desktop as look.bat. Save it as:
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: look.bat

Thanks for the info posted. Just the time to look up a few things and I'll post back with a fix. :)

Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  9. Click OK.
Look if you can see C:\MailChk\MailChecker.exe now and submit the file please.

Many thanks for the quick reply.

I've looked at all the options you suggest and I've even tried checking and then unchecking the things you suggest. The outcome is still the same. The only file I can see in the C:\MailChk\ folder is mc.dat.

Is this OK?

Thanks.

Hello johnmw,

I've looked at all the options you suggest and I've even tried checking and then unchecking the things you suggest. The outcome is still the same. The only file I can see in the C:\MailChk\ folder is mc.dat.

The entry in HijackThis has to be an orphan entry then, we'll fix that too.

Latest info

Unread postby johnmw » October 2nd, 2005, 7:02 am

Hi,

Many thanks for the latest information. I see you either stayed up late or got up early to file it.

I managed to follow the majority of the instructions but I made one mistake. I accidently ran an Ewido scan after I did the update and before I rebooted in safe mode. Once I had started the scan I didn't know if it was better to let it run or not. I decided to let it run. The log filed below is from this scan. I did another ewido scan in safe mode and it didn't find anything. Sorry about that.

One minor typo on your instructions.... Settings is under options, not tools, in Microsoft antispyware.

Here is the Hijack this log. I'll file the rest in a separate post.

Thanks again for all your help with this. Much appreciated.

FYI - Spybot and Ad-aware didn't find anything.

FYI2 - I couldn't delete two files from C:\documents and settings\alsly\local settings\temp\ as they were in use. The two files were ~DF6E9D.tmp and ~DFAEA.tmp

Hello johnmw,

Stayed up late is the correct answer to be honest ;)
Ok, no worries about the Ewido scan. I usually ask to run it in Safe Mode because sometimes Ewido can't clean up things in Normal Mode.
Thanks for pointing out the Microsoft AntiSpyware error in the canned speech, I'll adjust that. :)

C:\Program Files\SonicWALL\SonicWALL VPN Client\IreIKE.exe -> Heuristic.Win32.Dialer : Cleaned with backup
First of all we need to restore a legitimate file that was flagged by Ewido as a dialer.
Launch Ewido, click on the Quarantaine Button
Look after the following file and restore it:
C:\Program Files\SonicWALL\SonicWALL VPN Client\IreIKE.exe

No problem for ~DF6E9D.tmp and ~DFAEA.tmp, they are not usual lop files. In Safe Mode you should be able to delete all temp files.

Run HijackThis, click on None of the above, just start the program, click on Scan. Put a check in the box on the left side of the following items if still present:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Eq copy] C:\DOCUME~1\alsly\APPLIC~1\ERRORO~1\Info Bib Manager.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click Fix Checked

Using Windows Explorer, Search and Delete this Folder if listed:

C:\Documents and Settings\alsly\Application Data\Error Owns or any other folder that starts with Error and some characters.

Post a new HijackThis log for a check please. Also, how is the PC behaving now ?

Kim,

Hope you had a lie in today then.

I've followed your instructions and here is the outcome.

There was no error* files in alsly/application data. However, there was an entry in C:\documents and settings\all users\application data\error setup second user\. This contained 1 file called logo cool phone. I've deleted the folder and file but not emptied the recycle bin in case this was a wrong thing to do.

Also I searched for any file with *bib* in it and info bib manager didn't exist on the PC.

While working on your instuctions I noticed the following behaviour....

I used Hijackthis to delete the info bib manager line your recommended. I then ran a scan and checked that the line had disappeared. I then reactivated tea timer and noticed that it immediately denied access to a registry change for "eq copy" which is mentioned in the info bib manager line. After running a hijack this scan again the line including eq copy and info bib manager has appeared again.

This seems to be repeatable behaviour. It looks as if the user may have done something with spybot to stop the removal of the eq copy registry entry.

If this is the case, do I need to do something on Spy Bot to stop this tea timer behaviour? If yes, how might I do this?

The PC seems to be behaving OK at the moment. However, it hasn't been connected to the internet much as I took your advice and have minimised the amount I connect it until I have fixed the problem.

I'll post the latest hijact this log in a minute.

First of all, did you manage to restore the legitimate file deleted by Ewido ?

A strange behavior indeed, unless we have a file remaining somewhere. I personally don't use TeaTimer although I have Spybot installed. Not sure if you can ignore items with it, just Allow - Deny I think. Let's see if we can find out why the entry comes back. The scheduled tasks are gone ... so that's perfect. I was almost sure that the C:\Documents and Settings\alsly\Application Data\Error folder would be gone, I did post it in case it came back. LOP is a tricky one.

C:\documents and settings\all users\application data\error setup second user\
Yeah, looks like a strange folder too, you did very well by deleting it. Any idea on the extension of the file called "logo cool phone" ? Was it an *.exe, a *.dll ?

Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware and TeaTimer again and reboot.

We used to have a batch for resetting TeaTimer, but the download is unavailable atm, so please follow the instructions below. TeaTimer must not be running!

Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document.

Save it to your Desktop as ResetT.bat. Save it as:
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: ResetT.bat

Locate ResetT.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. A CMD window should open / close, this is normal.

Fix the following line again with HijackThis:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Eq copy] C:\DOCUME~1\alsly\APPLIC~1\ERRORO~1\Info Bib Manager.exe

Navigate to C:\Windows\Prefetch
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Run HijackThis, click on Open the Misc Tools Section, put a checkmark in List also minor sections and List empty sections. Click on Generate StartupList log, anwser Yes and copy/past the content in your reply.
Click Back and Click on Scan. When the scan is finished, click Save Log and paste the content in your reply so we will see if the O4 is gone.

Enable Microsoft AntiSpyware and TeaTimer, see if you still get the warning about that startup entry coming back.

Hi,

Yes I did manage to recover the file removed by Ewido.

The file type for "logo cool phone" was system file. In looking I noticed another folder in the same location. This was "copy ping live frag" and it contained three files of type system file "birdokayface" "idollocksanti" and "VGA UP Cdrom". I've deleted the folder and files and left them in the recycle bin just in case.

I didn't get the warning about not being able to change the registry value so your batch file seems to have done the job. Also, the info bib line seems to have gone.

Here is the startuplist file:

Hello johnmw,

The file type for "logo cool phone" was system file. In looking I noticed another folder in the same location. This was "copy ping live frag" and it contained three files of type system file "birdokayface" "idollocksanti" and "VGA UP Cdrom". I've deleted the folder and files and left them in the recycle bin just in case.

Well done, they are probably related to a high rate dialer - this kind of files / entries are very often related to that kind of infection :)

Files to delete :

C:\WINDOWS\INF\biini.inf
C:\WINDOWS\inf\bi6.inf
C:\WINDOWS\system32\70000041.exe

Folders to delete :

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fiz1
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\FLEOK

Copy/paste the following text into a new Notepad document. Make sure that you have one blank line at the end of the document as shown in the quoted text.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MATRIX_HTML]

Save it to your desktop as Fix.reg. Save it as :
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: Fix.reg

Locate Fix.reg on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the merged successfully prompt.
______________________________

I still have to look up the HijackThis startuplist, but I'm puzzled by a few startup keys, can you please perform the following task:

Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document.

regedit /e startup.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
notepad startup.txt
del /q startup.txt

Save it to your Desktop as look.bat. Save it as:
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: look.bat

Locate look.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply. When you close Notepad the CMD window will close automatically and the text file will be deleted.

Keep an eye on the O4 entry please, the "info bib" one or anything similar that makes no sense, since the Panda Scan did find a file infected by LOP.

Followed the instructions. All went fine. However, fiz1 was a file not folder in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\. I also found files fiz10 to fiz19 in the same folder. I deleted all of the files but left them in the recycle bin just in case.

Here are the results from the look.bat file:
