Hi, megan947. Welcome to Malware Removal. Sorry for the delay in getting to you.

  1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  3. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked:
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  5. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  6. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  7. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  8. Check all items and click on Remove Selected.
  9. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Please restart your computer, and then post a fresh HijackThis log for me to review, along with the results of the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan.

Thank for the reply. On Saturday when I turned the computer on, the message suddenly stopped. I'm very weirded out by this because I gave up trying to remove it days ago and haven't worked on it since contacting you. Is this normal for the messages to just suddenly stop for no reason? I'm going to download your stuff and get back to you with the log, but I just thought I'd share what happened over the weekend. It makes me nervous that it just suddenly stopped. I'm glad, but suspicious.

Hi, megan947. Yes, please tell me everything that goes on during the fix: Error responses, steps you cannot complete, files or folders you can't find or delete, etc. After all, you're my eyes and ears. I won't know what's going on unless you tell me. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. I'm not sure why you stopped getting the message on Saturday, but it looks like the scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware did what I wanted it to do. Do you remember what the message was?

Will you please run HijackThis again and post a fresh log for me? :)

Hi, it didn't do anything abnormal right before or after the pop up stopped. The pop up said, "Your computer was infected by unknown trojan. It's dangerous for your system (critical files can be lost)! Click ok to download the antispy-ware program to clean your system. (Recommended)" Your file scan did find a few bad files, but like I said, by the time I ran that, the pop up had stopped.

Here's my log file.

Hi, megan947. The popup you were getting is the typical message for the type of infection that was present on your system, but you should not see it anymore since running the Malwarebytes' scan because that appears to have removed it for us.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: Uncheck Cookies if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).

If you use Firefox browser

  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Now, I don't see any evidence of an Anti-Virus program on your system so I'd like you to run an online scan to see if we have anything else that may be lurking. Once that's done, I'll give you some links to free Anti-Virus programs that are available to home users.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX from Kaspersky. Click Yes.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Next button.
  • Click on Scan Settings button.
  • Select extended under Scan using the following antivirus database:
  • Check (tick) these boxes under Scan options:
    • Scan Archives
    • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Click on My Computer under Please select a target to scan:
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. Click on Save as text button and save it to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.

Due to Lack of Response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
