Am I infected? Scans say no, but computer is having problems

Unread postby philber » March 28th, 2008, 11:46 pm

I seem to have a trojan or malware on my computer and I have not been able to fix it. I run AVG free on my computer, download updates frequently and scan fairly routinely. In trying to solve this, I have run Panda, trendmicro, bitdefender, Kaspersky and a couple of other antivirus programs to no avail. I also regularly use ad aware and spybot, and since they did not fix the problem, ran through at least a dozen other such programs, all to no avail. I ran all of these in normal mode, and also as many of them as would operate while in Safe Mode, and still no results. I use zone alarm's free firewall, and according to shieldsup, my ports are all in stealth mode. At start up, all I have checked is zonealarm, avg antivirus, startup monitor, NvCpl and TeaTimer Spybot. I've tried numerous times to remove NvCpl as a startup item, but it ALWAYS re-inserts itself at startup, so not sure if that is related to the problem or not. It stays checked even if I uncheck it and reboot, it always resets itself to automatically load itself.
What the real problem is, is that pages do not fully load to completion, particularly on Seamonkey. I will open a page and the little egg timer symbol will permanently stay in the "incomplete" mode, and I mean I can let it go for over an hour, and it will still show the page as incompletely loaded. The green status bar indicator seen on the bottom, lower right of the screen will show mostly complete, but there is still space for several more green bars, indicating the page has not fully loaded. On the lower, bottom left I will get a message like "transferring data from.." and then the name of a website. This typically seems to be related to advertisements, like spe.atdmt.com or m1.2mdn.net and others. Or sometimes it will say "waiting for..." and the name of a website.
The only way to get the timer, status bar and "waiting for" message to end is to manually go to the Stop loading icon and click it. Then its fine and cpu usage is normal. But otherwise it hangs my computer up and makes pages slow to load once one page is not completely loaded. At times, my computer CPU usage is 100% (according to the Process Manager) and basically locks up, not being able to download information or open a new browser page. The process manager will show Seamonkey at 98/99/100% system resources. Occasionally it will show that amount for Firefox or IE when it is "locked up". And I've even seen the System Idle Process listed at 98/99/100% usage, but the overall CPU usage is listed as anywhere from 2 to 100%, so I don't know what it means when the system idle process is listed a t 100% but the CPU usage is not correlated to that high number.
Figuring all this was related to advertising sites not loading correctly, I installed adblock plus on both Mozilla, and later on Firefox. Neither situation improved. In fact, Firefox seemed worse, so I uninstalled it on both browsers. Can't say as I know how to tweak the settings on adblock, so maybe I missed something there. Next I uninstalled Seamonkey and reinstalled. No help. Then I uninstalled both Seamonkey and Firefox. No help there either.
So, am I infected with something per the below Hijackthis log taken today? If I am not infected, what would be the reason for the pages not loading fully? Any suggestions to solve that problem are appreciated, whether it is something hijackthis shows, or another idea if I appear to be clean of a virus.

Thanks for the help!!

Hi,

Welcome to Malware Removal.

It has been more than 5 days since your HijackThis log was posted. If you still need help, please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, please do the following:

  1. Please download and install CCleaner Slim.
  2. Once installed, double click on the desktop shortcut created.
  3. On the leftmost column, click on Tools.
  4. On the middle column, click on Uninstall.
  5. At the bottom right hand corner, click on the Save to text file... button.
  6. By default, it saves this file to C:\Program Files\CCleaner named install.txt. You may want to save it to your desktop to find it easily. Click Save.
  7. Close CCleaner.

Note: Doing this will not uninstall any programs. It will only produce a log of installed programs on your computer.

Do you use OpenDNS servers for your DNS settings?

In your next reply, please post:

  1. A new HijackThis log
  2. CCleaner install.txt file
  3. Whether you use OpenDNS servers for your DNS settings

Hi

Thanks for the help. Here are the items you requested, but I have no idea how to find if I am using OpenDNS servers or not. I went to the control panel, opened Network Settings and looked at things and all I see is that I obtain an IP address automatically and I have a preferred and alternate address to use for DNS addresses. Is this what is needd, or how do I find what you asked for?

Hi,

Please do not attach files here unless I've requested you to attach them.

Your CCleaner install.txt file also showed that you have missed a lot of important Windows updates. Do you update your Windows regularly? Please do not update Windows now.

Please print out or save this set of instructions as you will be rebooting the PC.

  1. Please download Fixwareout from Bleeping Computer and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click to run it.
  3. Click Next, followed by Install.
  4. Once installation is done, checked (ticked) Run fixit box.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. The fix will start, follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot the PC, please do so. Your system will take longer to start, this is normal.
  7. Once your PC rebooted, go to Start > Run and type in cmd.exe.
  8. Type in the following in the code box line by line, pressing Enter after each line:
    Code: Select all
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns
    exit

In your next reply, please post:

  1. Fixwareout report (C:\Fixwareout\report.txt)
  2. A new HijackThis log
  3. If you update your Windows regularly

On windows updates, my sysem is set to automatically get updates. When I am notified, I usually go with a custom install and skip the updates for programs that I do not use. I have NOT updated manually at this time.

Hi,

  1. Please download Deckard's System Scanner from Tech Support Forum and save it to your desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  2. Save all your work and close all opened programs.
  3. Double click on dss.exe to run it. Follow the prompts.
  4. When the scan is complete, two log files will be produced. The first one, main.txt, will be maximized, the second one, extra.txt, will be minimized.

Re: Am I infected? Scans say no, but computer is having problems

Unread postby philber » April 8th, 2008, 12:26 am

Hi

On the extra.txt, you say it wil be minimized, but I can not find it anywhere. I double click DSS and it pops up a box asking for permission to run it and I click OK. It then runs and gives me the main text file, which pops up in Notepad. from there, I see no way to find a file named extra.txt Using the options found in Notepad, I can search for a file, but doing that does not provide any files named extra. How do I find this file? I can't seem to get anything from DSS other than to be able to run it.

thanks

Hi,

Is that the first time you run DSS? If so, the report can be found in C:\Deckard\System Scanner.

If it's not your first time running DSS, please do the following:

Please make sure that dss.exe is on the desktop.

  1. Click Start > Run and copy and paste in "%userprofile%\desktop\deckardssytemscanner.exe" /config
  2. Click OK.
  3. This will bring up a pop up box.
  4. Uncheck (untick) all the boxes under Main log section.
  5. Check (tick) all the boxes under Extra log section.
  6. Click on the Scan! button.
  7. When the scan finishes the Extra.txt file will be minimized in taskbar at the bottom of your screen.
  8. Please post this log in your next reply.

Re: Am I infected? Scans say no, but computer is having problems

Unread postby ndmmxiaomayi » April 8th, 2008, 5:16 am

Hi,

Step 1

  1. Click on Start > All Programs > CCleaner > CCleaner.
  2. On the Windows tab, leave the default options alone.
  3. On the Applications tab, check (tick) all the boxes except Saved Form Information. This will remove all your saved passwords if you leave this box checked.
  4. Click on the Run Cleaner button at the bottom right hand corner.
  5. Close CCleaner.

Step 2

  1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  2. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  3. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  5. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  6. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  7. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  8. Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
  9. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Step 3

Please open Notepad and copy and paste the following in the Code box into Notepad:

Code: Select all
@echo off
echo echo Log file can be found at C:\contents.txt if Notepad doesn't open automatically.
echo Contents of SoftwareRevenue folder >> C:\contents.txt
echo. >> C:\contents.txt
dir /s "C:\Program Files\SoftwareRevenue.org" >> C:\contents.txt
echo. >> C:\contents.txt
echo Hidden files in SoftwareRevenue folder >> C:\contents.txt
echo. >> C:\contents.txt
dir /s /a:h "C:\Program Files\SoftwareRevenue.org" >> C:\contents.txt
notepad C:\contents.txt

Click on File > Save As....

In the File Name box, copy and paste in dirlook.bat

In the Save As Type box, select All Files from the drop-down list.

Click Save.

Double click on dirlook.bat to run it. Command Prompt will open and close quickly; this is normal. Notepad will open shortly afterwards. Please post the contents of this Notepad file in your next reply.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan report
  2. A new HijackThis log
  3. Contents of Notepad file from Step 3 (C:\contents.txt)
