Suspected boot or BIOS virus.

Unread postby RichardUK » March 30th, 2008, 7:28 am

I think I have a BIOS or boot sector virus. I have tried hardware diagnostic tools, spyware tools, and anti-virus tools all report all is well. But for some weeks now and several re-builds later the problems persist. Namely chkdsk generates "replacing invalid security id with default security id for file .... (for all files), The first sign of a problem was when windows reported that it could not find the boot manager file. Performance does not seem to be affected except when shutting down which is much slower than it used to be. I suspect that the virus has spread to my backup devices or the BIOS itself. But there just does not seem to be any way of detecting the virus. I am using Windows Vista Ulitmate. If anyone has any ideas on how to find and or fix the problem please let me know. I have appended a HijackThis file below.

Sorry for the delay Richard, the forums are very busy.

Your problem doesn't sound malware related, a lot of experts are yet to be convinced of a BIOS virus existing.
(especially on Vista)

Did you do a complete reformat on your disc, or just a repair install ?
