Unread postby pyro » September 26th, 2005, 7:51 pm

I am having troubles with my girlfriends computer and cant get this spyware to stay away. From what I have read it is a lop variant and comes back each time after running adaware/spybot. I have also tried A^2 & CCleaner as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have the toolbar, the icons on the desktop, and the toolbar at the bottom of the desktop sometimes as well.

Register to Remove

Unread postby markkhunt » September 27th, 2005, 10:11 am

Hi, pyro. Welcome to the forums.

Yes, your girlfriend’s computer does have a LOP infection, but it can usually be removed fairly easily. I will have you start the computer in Safe Mode, which will prevent you from having access to the Internet, so you’ll want to either print these instructions or save them to a file on your desktop for easy reference.

LOP is normally installed with Messenger Plus 3 and its sponsor (C2Media) program. Although I don’t see any evidence of Messenger Plus 3, please go to Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel and remove the following programs if listed.

C2Media
LOP
LOP.com
LopDotCom
Messenger Plus 3

If you removed any programs, please restart your computer.

Open Notepad. Please copy the contents of the Code box below and paste it into a new Notepad file. Please save this file as findjobs.bat to your desktop and make sure that Save as type is set to All files.

Code: Select all
dir %Windir%\tasks /a h > files.txt

Now, double-click findjobs.bat to run it. You may get an alert about a batch/script file trying to run. Please allow it. A file called files.txt will be created on your desktop. I need you to copy the contents of this file into your next post.

Please run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these items to have them fixed. If something isn’t there, please continue with the next item on the list.

In addition, I can see that restrictions have been set on Internet Explorer. If neither your girlfriend nor a Network Administratior (if in an office setting) set these restrictions, either manually or with a program like Spybot S&D, then please check the following two items also.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Now, please close all open windows and browsers, including this one, and click Fix Checked.

We need to make sure you can see all files, including hidden and system files. Please click Start => My Computer. On the menu bar select Tools => Folder Options, and then select the View tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, please make sure Show hidden files and folders is checked and Hide protected operating system files (recommended) is unchecked. Click Yes to confirm, and then click OK.

Now, restart your computer into Safe Mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu). For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Use Windows Explorer and delete the following folders shown below in red if present:

You're very welcome, pyro.

Some malware will put restrictions on Internet Explorer, so I had to ask. Since you set the restrictions yourself with Spybot, just ignore the O6s in the HijackThis log. It's fine to leave them alone.

pyro, it looks like we're getting there.

Firefox really is a much more secure browser than Internet Explorer, but if she doesn't want make the switch there are some things we can do to make her browsing a little safer. Once we've got you cleaned, we'll talk about that.

Open Notepad. Please copy the contents of the Code box below and paste it into a new Notepad file. Please save this file as deljobs.bat to your desktop and make sure that Save as type is set to All files.

Code: Select all
%systemdrive%
cd C:\WINDOWS\Tasks
attrib -r -s -h A455104F91C68C0F.job
del A455104F91C68C0F.job

Now, double-click deljobs.bat to run it. You may get an alert about a batch/script file trying to run. Please allow it.

Please run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to this item to have it fixed:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.sgieyrthnxfrnmfzjyfjkh.us/UE ... /CmC2.html

Now, close all open browsers and windows, and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer.

If you still have the findjobs.bat file you created in the earlier post, please double-click it again to run it. If not, let's recreate the file because I want to make sure everything has been deleted.

If the file is still there from the previous run, it is OK to overwrite the file.

Run HiajckThis again and post a new log for me to review, along with the contents of files.txt.

pyro, you are very welcome. I’m glad to help. :)

I don’t see any sign of LOP in your latest log, so it looks like we were successful. Is the toolbar gone, and can you delete the extra icons from your desktop?

Let’s run HijackThis one more time, please. Click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to this item to have it fixed.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

Close all open windows and browsers, including this one, and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer and please post another HijackThis log.

The toolbar & the icon on the desktop are gone and havent come back for about 12 hours. They usually come back within 10 minutes so I guess its looking good. I deleted that last R0 entry and it took the background off the desktop. Thats easy to fix.

Hi, pyro. The last HijackThis log looks really good. :D

How is the computer running? Were you able to restore the background for the desktop? Are you having any other problems?

Let’s clean out your temporary folders. Please click Start => Run and type cleanmgr in the command box. Select your C: and click OK to scan your system. When the scan has completed, please make sure that Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, and Temporary Files are the only items selected. Click OK, and then click Yes to confirm. If you have more than one user account on the computer, you will need to run cleanmgr from each account to delete all the temporary files.

Let’s also clean out your Prefetch folder. Using Windows Explorer, please navigate to C:\Windows\Prefetch\ and delete everything in the folder. Please delete only the contents of the folder, NOT the Prefetch folder itself.

Viruses, Adware, and Spyware are running rampant, but taking a few simple precautions can prevent many of them. Below I have included a number of recommendations for additional protection to help prevent future malware infections. These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

You have already installed the second Service Pack for Windows XP. That's great. I highly recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update site and install all High Priority updates as soon as possible. I cannot stress enough how important this is. If you have not already, you may want to set up your computer to receive updates from Microsoft automatically. For instructions, on enabling automatic updates, visit the Microsoft website.

1) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE Already installed
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy Already installed
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

2) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

3) Since your girlfriend prefers Internet Explorer, add another level of protection to the browser by blocking certain sites that are known to contain malware. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. ID-SPYAD may be found here.

4) You already have AVG anti-virus installed. Excellent! For your own protection, please be sure to run it regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, if you are not already, you should consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, Kerio, and Sygate. A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

thanks again for all of your help. Restoring the background wasnt a problem and the PC is running much faster now & responds quicker now. I will check out the programs that you have recommended. Hopefully I wont have to go thru this again, but if I do I definitely know where to turn to.
