Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
I ran spybot and found zlob and winantiviruspro2006. None of my normal programs seemed to notice them, including spybot. Tried AVG rootkit, then AVG free antivirus removed a virus I didn't write down the name of, purity something. Then it removed adware.companion.B and application.winfixer.AA. None of these said Zlob so I searched the Windows Security website and they recommended HiJackThis. My name is Teri <Personal info edited - 'KG>. I am 55 and I try but I don't trust my ability to do much or even understand much of this.

I am turtledove,
Welcome to the forum :)

I will be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs take awhile to research. Please be patient with me. I know that you want your problems solved quickly, and I will work hard to help you.

As an Undergraduate, my posts will be checked first by An Expert. Please be patient, I'll post a fix soon.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic. Please stay at one forum for help.
3. Please continue reading posts until I give the All Clear. It is important to note this, as a clean looking HijackThis is not always a sign your system is clean.

If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
*Please do not run any fixes on your own, as they may interfere with our work.
*If you are going to be busy and unable to post for more than 5 days please post in this thread so we know and do not close this thread.

Thanks for your patience!

Hello terimelton,

First, you are running more than ! Antivirus Program. This can cause conflicts and slow down your computer performance. Please choose only ONE and uninstall the other(s) through Add/Remove programs.
*Let me know which you decide to keep.

Next:
Lets see a startuplist log please:

Open Hijackthis
Click "open misc tools section"
Check options:

"List also minor sections (full)"
"List empty sections (complete)"

Click "generate startuplist log" and OK.

Post results please. Log is created in same folder you have hijackthis running from. (startuplist.txt)

Nect:
Please download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... e-combofix

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers and disconnect from internet.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please Post:
Combofix Log C:\Combofix.txt
A new HijackThis log
startuplist.txt
Any problems or new symptoms you are having.
*These will most likely take 2 or 3 posts, so none are cut off.

Thank You
Turtledove

I will not be at home until Monday evening. I think my problem mainly was that I was looking at what spybot was looking FOR, and thinking it was the programs it was looking AT. When I run AdAware or Pest Patrol it shows the files it is currently searching. But I now presume spybot is showing the programs it was looking for. The names on these are often pretty scary, especially all the keylogger and banker spyware. As I said, I got rid of several things. I understand Windows XP has a firewall so I don't have another one. I have always been told no one spyware or adware program can get them all so have always ran at least two. I also use CCleaner because it is so fast to clean up almost daily. I have never heard of Combofix, but I will check it out. But I will not have access to my comp until Monday evening to send the startup list or make changes in the programs I run. Are you really sure I should only use one? What about the ones that slip by it???

Hello Terri,

Thank you for letting me know of your not being available till Monday evening. Below are some definitions to Anti Virus versus Anti Spyware as well as Firewall suggestions.

1. Anti Virus: This type program will help protect against Viruses and Trojans. This is different than the Anti Spyware programs. Run only ONE Anti Virus program to avoid PC slowdowns or crashes as well as conflict between AV programs.
**Please uninstall the extra you are running. If running a paid Version, uninstall the free/trial Anti Virus programs please.

2. Anti Spyware Programs
This type of program monitors for Spyware; those programs that track your online usage or send your private information back to the spying program's author or third parties.
You have Spybot and AdAware 2007 already. Unless AdAware is the paid version, you have no Real Time protection. If you have TeaTimer by Spybot on, then you have that Real Time Protection.

3. Firewalls
Xp's Firewal is only good for ONE WAY internet monitoring. That is INCOMING only. It is very important to have TWO WAY monitoring. This prevents "bad" programs calling out to "Homebase" allowing for more downloads of malware or updating itself, as well as sending private information to "Homebase".

After downloading ONE of the following, disconnect computer from the Internet.
Online Armor
Comodo Personal Firewall

Next,:
TURN OFF WINDOWS FIREWALL
  • Press Start->Run, type wscui.cpl and press OK
  • Click Windows Firewall, make sure Off is selected and press OK

Understanding and using firewalls:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutoria ... ial60.html

Please follow the directions in my last post next.

Post:
Which Anti Virus you're keeping, if you have paid for AdAware 2007, that you have installed a two way Firewall, and disabled Windows Firewall.
The ComboFix.txt
A New HijackThis jog.

Thank you,
