I think I have a Trojan Horse - Help!

Unread postby alex7wilson » March 23rd, 2008, 6:19 pm

I have Symantec Corporate Edition, and it keeps telling me I have a Trojan Horse in C://WINDOWS/system32/cdmodemd.dll, but it cannot fix or quarantine the file because the program does not have access. It says that the file is in use by another program. I tried AVG Free Edition, and it gave me the same story, but it also told me that the Trojan Horse is a "Delf" file. I have tried some other programs (Spy Doctor, AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, Advanced WindowsCare V2, Rogue Remover FREE, and Avast). Nothing has worked so far. The following is my hijackthis log file. What can I do to fix this problem?

Ugg! More problems

Unread postby alex7wilson » March 25th, 2008, 2:08 pm

I am having problems finding the Windows XP recovery console for two reasons. First, Dell did not send a Windows XP installation/boot CD with my computer. I borrowed one from a friend (Windows XP Professional), but I received an error message telling me that the version of Windows XP on the CD is older than my currently installed system (SP2). The second problem is the link that would allow me to download the recovery console from the windows site is a dead link. I followed the link on the ComboFix website, found my version of windows (XP SP2) and clicked on it, which took me to a different site ("Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install"), and when I click download, I get another webpage, which says "We’re sorry, but there is no Microsoft.com Web page that matches your entry. It is possible you typed the address incorrectly, or the page may no longer exist. You may wish to try another entry or choose from the links below, which we hope will help you find what you’re looking for." I cannot find a place to download the recovery console anywhere. Am I stuck until Dell sends me a Windows XP CD? What do I do now?

Never mind. I am using Mozilla Firefox as a web browser, and for some reason, it blocked the download. I used my Internet Explorer and the download worked. Sorry for the confusion.

I ran ComboFix. Here is my log:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

I expected it to be longer. What should I do now?

Okay

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Re: I think I have a Trojan Horse - Help!

Unread postby sjpritch25 » March 25th, 2008, 9:32 pm

You have three Anti-Virus programs running, this is not recommended because it can cause bluescreens and slowdowns. Please remove two of these Symantec, Avg, or Avast.

Run HijackThis, and press "Do a System Scan Only".
1. When the scan is complete place a check mark next to the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [6acbzd8x] C:\WINDOWS\system32\6acbzd8x.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [6acbzd8x] C:\WINDOWS\system32\6acbzd8x.exe

2. After checking these items CLOSE ALL open windows EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked." Then, reboot your computer...

================================================

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

======================================

Open Hijackthis, Click Open the Misc tools section Then click the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
The Add/Remove Programs Manager panel should appear.
In this panel click the Save list button.
Save the uninstall_list.txt file to your desktop and copy and paste the contents back in your next reply.

In your next reply, please include the following logs:
  1. Fresh Hijackthis log
  2. MBAM log
  3. uninstall_list log.

Unread postby alex7wilson » March 26th, 2008, 12:21 am

I removed all the programs except "Internet Explorer Default Page" because it is not in the control panel-add or remove programs list. It is only in the hijackthis list. Should I use "delete this entry" in hijackthis to get rid of the entry, or is there another way to uninstall/remove that program/file?

Here is another hijackthis file:

I think the Trojan Horse is gone. I haven't received a message from my antivirus lately, and the suspected file is gone. Is there anything else I need to do?

I do have one more question. My computer is a laptop, and it has a section of the touchpad that functions like a scroll-wheel on a mouse. The scroll-wheel function disappeared sometime during my futile attempts to rid myself of the trojan you aptly destroyed. How can I gain the scroll-wheel function back?

Thanks a million for your help!

My computer is running much better. I am pretty sure the virus/trojan is gone. I only have one further issue. I am not sure what this is called (maybe autostart?), but when I put a CD/DVD into the CD/DVD drive or attach a USB drive (thumbdrive), the window that asks something like "what action would you like to perform" does not pop up. I have to manually open Windows Media player or manually open the thumbdrive in My Computer in order to access those files.

That is a security feature that was applied by ComboFix. Today, flashdrives/jumbdrives are able to transfer virus's/malware computer to computer. This feature will protect you from that, if you want it removed just let me know.

I didn't know it was a protective/preventative measure. I don't think it will be a problem with my existing hardware. If I connect new hardware (such as a jumpdrive, video camera, external DVD burner, etc.), will it still automatically install any drivers or anything else needed to make the new drive work?

Also, is it a good idea to keep all these programs that I downloaded (like rogueremover, combofix, malewarebytes' antimalware)? Should I run them manually every so often?

One last question:
This computer is a Dell, and it came with System Restore. I set a restore point a while back, and it takes up almost 8 gigs of memory. Is it necessary to keep that restore point or does Windows System Restore do the same/similar thing without taking a huge chunk of memory?
