Hey Wendi123,

Below's my standard intro, but most of it still applies.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Finally, please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

It may take me a while to reply to you as all of my fixes are being checked by experts to ensure that you are getting a good fix. And remember, like you I have a real life, so I may not be at my computer when you are!

Hi Wendi123,

Thanks for all of the scans.

It seems that between your original post and now, someone installed AVG on your system in addition to Symantec. Did you try to uninstall Symantec?
Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even crash.

Also, the virus appears to be in the installer for Repligator14. This could be a false positive, or it could be a real virus. If Repligator was downloaded from P2P filesharing or a "warez" site, it's likely infected. I've included instructions to delete the setup.exe file below.
If you know that Repligator was obtained legitimately, you may want to contact Ransen software about the matter.

Run SmitfraudFix

Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Take out the Trash
Now, browse to the following folders and files and delete them if present.

C:\Program Files\Ransen Software\Repligator14\Setup.exe

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 5.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

When you've completed all of the above, please post back with the contents of rapport.txt along with a new HijackThis log and an answer to my question about your Antivirus software.
Thanks,

Yes I did have 2 anti-virus software programs running. I forgot to uninstall Norton as I'm still waiting on a refund from them, but that's done now. I've done everything you suggested, there was no repligator.exe file in the folder but I've deleted the folder now. We still can't get into my husband's User Profile. When we try it says "The User Profile Service failed to logon" "User profile cannot be loaded". Any idea why this is? In the meantime here are my SmitfraudFix log file and my new HijackThis log file.

Hi Wendi123,

Wendi123 wrote:Yes I did have 2 anti-virus software programs running. I forgot to uninstall Norton as I'm still waiting on a refund from them, but that's done now.

I take it that you uninstalled Symantec. If so, it's left some remains. Can you tell me what version you were using? There are clean up tools out there, but they are version specific.

I'd like to do a couple more scans to make sure we've gotten everything.

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
- A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
- Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
- Save the log file to your desktop

Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Please let me know what version of Symantec you have and post back with the results of the Panda scan, the MalwareBytes Antimalware scan and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks,

Hi FencerGirl

The Symantec product we were using was Norton Internet Security (think it was 2008 as it was an upgrade in February from a trial we were given when we bought the computer back in 2007).

Unfortunately I am unable to run Panda Active Scan from either your link or going directly to their website as when I click on the link Scan your PC Now nothing happens and I get an "error on page" message in the bottom left hand corner - any idea why?

However I have did manage to run the Malwarebytes software according to your instructions and here are the results:

Hi Wendi123,

I'm not sure what's up with Panda ActiveScan. It wouldn't run for me either.

As for your Symantec, please download and run their tool from here. This tool will work for NIS 2008.

Since Panda wouldn't work, why don't we an ESET Online scan to make sure we got everything.

Please go to Eset website to perform an online scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

  1. Check (tick) this box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click on the Start button next to it.
  3. When prompted to run ActiveX. click Yes.
  4. You will be asked to install an ActiveX. Click Install.
  5. Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
  6. After the scanner is initialized, click Start.
  7. Uncheck (untick) Remove found threats box.
  8. Check (tick) Scan unwanted applications.
  9. Click on Scan.
  10. It will start scanning. Please be patient.
  11. Once the scan is done, you will find a log in C:\Program Files\esetonlinescanner\log.txt. Please post this log in your next reply.

Finally, give me one last HijackThis log.

So, when you've completed the above, you'll need to post back with the results from Kaspersky and your (hopefully) last HijackThis log.
Thanks,

Hi Wendi123,
There's only one mroe thing to clean up, then you appear to be malware free.

Scan with HijackThis and check the following if present.

O16 - DPF: {C2A9D251-E089-A5AE-9A66-5DF5EB03A9F6} - http://performanceoptimizer.com/.landing/SoftInst.cab

CLOSE ALL OTHER WINDOWS and select "Fixed Checked".

I strongly recommend you run the Symantec uninstall tool if you don't intend to use Symantec in the future. If you want to keep Symantec, then uninstall AVG.

As to your husband's profile issue, I'm unfortunately not qualified to deal with that problem.
Here are some good Hardware/System Help Forums
Computer Trouble here:
http://forum.computertrouble.co.uk/index.php
or
TechSupportGuy here : http://forums.techguy.org/21-windows-nt-2000-xp/
or
PCPitStop here : http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showforum=3
All may require you to register free before posting for help.

Please post back with a HijackThis log after you've Fixed the line listed above and cleaned up either AVG or Symantec.
Thanks,

Hi Fencergirl

I did everything you asked, ie checked the line on Hijack This and "fixed" it and I've also, using the Norton Uninstall Tool removed everything to do with that. I thought I'd done this before but obviously not. Thank you for the links to sites that may be able to help with my husband's login problem. Here is the, hopefully, final HiJack This log:

Hi Wendi123,
Your latest log looks clean! Great Job!

Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.
Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch the program.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programs alerts you, allow it access.
  • You will be prompted to allow the clean up procedure, click Yes
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt
  • Now delete OTMoveIt.exe

You'll also want to uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. You can do this by using the "Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" shortcut in the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder or via Add/Remove Programs. You should also delete the Norton Removal Tool.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
    • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
    • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
    • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
    • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
    • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
    • Click OK
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - You are using AVG, so keep up the good work!
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  9. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Good luck getting your husband's profile problems sorted out and let me know if you have any more malware related questions,

Hi Fencergirl

Thank you so much for all your help. Finally cleared - lets hope it stays that way. I've downloaded the Spyware software as recommende ande uninstalled everything I needed to. Windows Firewall is active anyway. Hopefully that's all sorted now.

As for my husband's login thats now sorted too as I found the solution on one of the websites you recommended so thank you once again.

Rest assured if I have any further problems I will be in touch again.
Kind regards
