Hi G Jones, Welcome to Malware Removal!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. Please note that I am still in training here at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

HiJackThis logs do take some time to review and research. I would appreciate it if while you are waiting, you could please do the following for me:

Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

As we work together to resolve your problem, please read these instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them to Notepad.

Lastly, please keep these points in mind:
  • If you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Please post your replies only to this topic, and please DO NOT start a new thread.
  • Since there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

I am reviewing your log now, and will be back with you shortly. Thank you for your patience.

Ken

Hello G Jones,

I apologize for the delay.

It does appear that you are infected. Before we begin, I need to stress some important points to you.
  • Some of the instructions I will provide may get quite long. I highly recommend that you print a copy of them off or copy them into Notepad.
  • If at any time you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • Please keep in mind that the instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Also, please remember that there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

Ready? Lets go....

Step #1: Disable Windows Defender
Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix. To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

*==============================================*

Step #2: Download and Run ATF Cleaner

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*==============================================*

STEP #3 Remove malware lines using Hijack This

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

O2 - BHO: Windows Media Player - {D5A7151F-58D0-4AC8-9329-BEDD59625679} - C:\Windows\wmpdxm.dll

NOTE:

I see that you have Napster installed, and running at Start-up. This is not necessary, as you can start the program manually. If you would like to fix this then please also check this line:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NapsterShell] C:\Program Files\Napster\napster.exe /systray

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

STEP #4 View hidden files and folders

Next, we need to enable the "Show Hidden Folders" Option. To do this, please do the following:
  1. Right click on the Start menu and select Explore.
  2. Click on Tools > Folder Options....
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders.
  5. Uncheck (untick) these two boxes:
Hide extensions for known file types
Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  6. Click Yes when Windows prompts.
  7. Click OK to apply the settings.

*===============================================*

STEP #5 Delete all bad files and folders

Open Windows Explorer by right clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore. Navigate to and find the following FILES: If found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\Windows\wmpdxm.dll

After deleting the above files, please be sure to empty your recycle bin.

*===============================================*

Step #6 Run Kaspersky Online Scan

With the exception of Internet Explorer, which must be used for this scan, keep ALL programs closed
Please do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the licence accepted, reset to 100%.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Click the Save Report As... button (see red arrow below)

    Image
  • In the Save as... prompt, select Desktop
  • In the File name box, name the file KasScan-ddmmyy (or similar)
  • In the Save as type prompt, select Text file (see below)

    Image
  • Copy and paste the report in your next post.
Note: It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware application you use.

*===============================================*

STEP #7 Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the Kaspersky Online Scan Log
Thanks,
Ken

Hi G Jones,

I am sorry you had trouble with the Kaspersky scan. We need to find out a little more about those entries though.

Did you run Steps 1-5 of the fix? I see the bad lines still present in the Hijack This log, actually it appears that you posted the same log, so I need to make sure that you followed the directions and no problems were encountered.

Let's try this. Please follow Steps 1-5 of the previous fix, starting with the running of ATF Cleaner. Follow all of those steps, except this time, leave out the Kaspersky scan. Instead, let's try this:

Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Once you have completed Steps 1-5 of the above, and after you have run the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan, please post the following:
  • a new Hijack This log
  • the contents of the Malwarebytes' Anti-malware log.
If you have any questions, please ask.

Thanks,
Ken

Before I do anything else....here is the problems I ran into with steps 1 through 5

Step 1 Disable Windows Defender

No problem with that

Step 2 Downloand and Run ATF Cleaner

I couldn't check "Prefetch" It was shaded and wouldn't let me.

Step 3 Remove Malware Lines Using Hijack This

O2 - BHO: Windows Media Player - {D5A7151F-58D0-4AC8-9329-BEDD59625679} - C:\Windows\wmpdxm.dll

That only appears on the saved log file in the notepad. It does not show on screen within the HiJack This program for me to check to fix

Step 4

No problem

Step 5

C:\Windows\wmpdxm.dll

This file wasn't there to delete

Hi G Jones,

Don't worry about the preftech folder. The folders that we want to empty are the Temp folders. Go ahead and run ATF Cleaner.

We are going to approach the bad entry in Hijack This a different way. Please do the following:

RUN SMITFRAUD-OPTION #1

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Right-click on SmitfraudFix.exe and click on Run as administrator
Click Allow
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

In your next reply, please post a new Hijack This log, and the contents of the SmitfraudFix report.

Thanks,
Ken

I am reviewing your SmitfraudFix log now. In the mean time, I need you to run a NEW Hijack This log. The log that you posted, is the same log as the past two. In between each fix, please make sure that you run Hijack This from the start. That way we can keep track of how we are progressing.

I will post a new fix later today, however, if you could get me the new Hijack This log that would be great. Thanks.

Hi G.

Thanks! That is much better. Is your system showing any improvement? The new log isn't showing the offending 02 line in Hijack This any longer. You still are showing a couple of suspicious lines though. I will put a new fix together get it checked by the expert I am working with, and post it for you. Might be later tonight, but more likely tomorrow morning.

By the way, did you run ATF Cleaner?

Also, if you can while your waiting, please go ahead and follow the directions for the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan that was posted earlier. That might shed some more light on what is going on.

Thanks,
Ken

Yes I have noticed alot of improvement lately. I ran a program called Combofix earlier which seemed to help at the time.

I appreciate anything else you find.

Hi G. Jones,

I am glad you are seeing improvement. When did you run Combofix? If you ran it prior to me helping you, that is fine. If you ran it since posting here at MWR, please refrain from running any other tools unless directed to do so. I know you want your system to be fixed quickly, however please understand that some of these tools are VERY powerful and can quickly cause havoc if not used properly.

Please do the following, and lets see if we can take care of the rest:

STEP #1 Remove malware lines using Hijack This

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [DelayShred] "c:\program files\mcafee\mshr\ShrCL.EXE" /P7 /q C:\Users\gavin\AppData\Local\Temp\Low\HSPERF~1.SH! (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [DelayShred] "c:\program files\mcafee\mshr\ShrCL.EXE" /P7 /q C:\Users\gavin\AppData\Local\Temp\Low\HSPERF~1.SH! (User 'Default user')

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

STEP #2 Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
Thanks,
Ken
