Unread postby ifelter1690 » March 16th, 2008, 4:08 pm

I keep getting the "your computer is infected" error every time I go to a new page or click on anything. I ran several virus and spyware scans and have had no luck. I found this sight from Leo Laport on KFIam640 if there are any fans of his here... he says you Pros are the best!!
Here is my file from Hijack This... any ideas about my hijack? thanks!!!

Hi ifelter1690,

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save):
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Right-click SmitfraudFix.exe and select Run as administrator
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi ifelter1690,

Yes you did everything just fine :)

The DSS report shows that your McAfee antivirus definitions are out of date. Without up-to-date definitions your antivirus program cannot protect you effectively. Please update it immediately and set it to automatically update itself. If you have any problems with this, please let me know.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Start->All Programs->Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, uncheck Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open Start->Control Panel->Uninstall a Program, look down the this item and remove it:
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
This is out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 5) from here

You have My Web Search (Ask Toolbar) installed on your system. This program is not malware, but it may report on your surfing behavior and is considered undesirable, see here and here for more information. If you actually use this program, consider a safe alternative such as Google Toolbar.
I recommend you remove this program, to do so, find and remove this entry:
My Web Search (Webfetti)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please print/save a copy of the following instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows Vista Advanced Boot Options.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the Safe Mode option using the arrow keys then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, right-click on SmitfraudFix.exe and select Run as administrator
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post a the new SmitfraudFix report and a new HijackThis log.

Re: HijackThis log So Cal, please help...

Unread postby silver » March 25th, 2008, 12:48 am

Hi ifelter1690,

Please right-click the HijackThis program or shortcut, and choose Run as administrator to start the program
Choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O2 - BHO: Windows Media Player - {9E4503CE-5E52-41F9-A603-D63ED018CED5} - C:\Windows\wmpdxm.dll

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following files:
C:\amp.bat
C:\Windows\wmpdxm.dll
If you have trouble finding or deleting any, please let me know in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

When prompted, allow the installation of ActiveX components from Kaspersky
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save Report As... button, change Save as type: to Text file and save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt
  • If Internet Explorer responds saying the report has been saved to the Temporary Internet Files folder, say Yes to open the folder, then navigate to C -> Users -> (Your username) -> Desktop to locate the report
Note: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your computer is running.

Due to Lack of Response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
