Quarantine Problems...post virus attack followup

Unread postby miles » March 5th, 2008, 1:27 pm

Every couple of hours, my Anti-Virus (Symantec) pops up and tells me "Updated virus protection files have been delivered and installed on your computer.... You can process the quarantine items now or scan them at a later time. Do you want to continue?"

I say yes, and the next screen displays G (a slave drive):/RECYCLER/NPROTECT/00002638 with no virus name. "Click next to see if these items can be repaired" which I do, and get "Items in quarantine can not be repaired using the virus definition files just delivered."

A few weeks ago I had a virus attack that involved purityscan and a bunch of attempts at trojan insertions. At one point, it looked like Symantec AntiVirus (the real time protection part) was turned off for a few seconds.

SAV said that everything was quarantined or deleted, and a system scan comes up clean, but I'm still skeptical. Here is my HJT log:

Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • If you are, for any reason, going out of town, on vacation, or are are for example too busy please tell me when you will probably be able to reply again. If you don't do so, the topic will be closed after about one week!
  • Finally, please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    • Start HijackThis
    • Click on the Config button
    • Click on the Misc Tools button
    • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop and post the contents in a reply to this topic. Also post a new HijackThis log as it's been a week since you posted the first one.
Greets, John.

Hi miles,

The logs look clean. The recycler folder you talked about is the folder where all the files and folders in the Recycle Bin are stored, so it could be that you have already removed it. If not, we will do it now ;)

There's one thing I want to make sure. I see a lot of traces from a university and maybe this desktop/laptop is owned by the university (I can only guess). Anyway, please make sure you are allowed to make changes to this computer so you won't get in trouble.

Another thing I see is the following line:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
It means there's some kind of policy present. It's likely to be set by you or your administrator. Spybot is a program which can set it and I see it's present on your system. Please tell me if you want to keep it the way it is now.

You aren't running Firewall Software. Please download and install one of them first!

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound/outbound not sure). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
Kerio
Online Armor

As you did this, we can begin with the fix.

P2P Warning!
Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation
Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer programs themselves is here :
Clean/Infected P2P Programs
Please decide if you want to keep using P2P so I can put it in my next speech if you don't want to keep it.
