Unread postby DarkHell1 » March 8th, 2008, 3:31 pm

Hi,
please could someone help me fix this, driving me nuts i have a webpage that opens up as a backgroud img, (link http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/dark-hell/Danger.jpg )
I have Tried Removing this from the stored location in c:/windows/Privacy_dander
in safe mode and using a dos file manager, with no luck im hoping someone will be able to help.
i did first try a system restore but as i though it did nothing. i have since turned off sys restore to prevent the files from being saved.
in additionto the above system is a little slow but not by much. and when browsing i get this (link http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/dark-hell/danger1.jpg) window popup. about every 10mins. (very annoying when playing games full screen)
Thanks
Dennis
*PS:i have tried to remove this by checking the box in HJT and clicking Fix Checked. but after a restart i think there is somthing re downloading the files.

Hi, and welcome to malwareremoval forums

I'm dan12, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

Hi, DarkHell1
Firstly can you turn system restore back on as it's better to have a restore point than none at all!

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

please post back with: text file and a new highjackthis log.

Hello,
Logs for HJT and SmitfraudFix are below.
please note after reading few other posts i found someone recommended the "SUPERAntiSpyware " i downloaded and ran the "Free Edition" and its cleared the files in the Privacy_danger folder in c:/windows and the annoying IE popups,i did keep getting a error box come up "file:///C:\WINDOWS\privacy_danger\index.htm" with error saying cant find file.
.
I ran the programm you said and HJT agine along with a quick scan of SUPERAntiSpyware. and *touch's wood* the backgroud is normale again...
I just hope it stays like this.
If there is further steps you think i could/should take, i will be glad of you advice,
just so you know normaley i run Bullguard AV with PestPatrol CORP Edition.
i got all this trouble after removing BG AV so i could host/play games on Steam without extra system strain/lag. also firewall on BGAV keeps switching on lol.

thanks in for all you help,
dennis
PS: turned system restore back on. ..

Whilst were working your cleanup please don't download other tools unless I ask for them untill I give you the all clear,
as doing your own thing could mess the fix up. The fix I give you is done in a set way to clear the infection.

please note after reading few other posts i found someone recommended the "SUPERAntiSpyware " i downloaded and ran the "Free Edition" and its cleared the files in the Privacy_danger folder in c:/windows and the annoying IE popups,i did keep getting a error box come up

The fixes given are specific to individual systems.
I will be posting your second part soon.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Due to lack of response this topic is now closed.

If you still need help open a new thread in the Malware Removal forum and wait for a new helper.
