Hi mcinnis,

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

Next, open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your Desktop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.

Hi mcinnis,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, there are a number of uninstalls to consider:

Please remove Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_18 This is outdated and now a security risk. When you're machine is clean, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 4) from here

My Global Search Bar, Party Poker, and Need2Find Bar have all been classified as malware or malware installers, please remove them

You have Cheat Engine installed. This program contains a rootkit which is used to hide files, processes and registry entries. While the program itself is not malicious, the rootkit could be used to hide anything and therefore is a major security risk - I strongly recommend you remove it. To do so, find and uninstall Cheat Engine 5.4

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
To remove, find and uninstall these:
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

You have Bearshare, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but it does redirect search results. Also, peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I strongly recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open AVG Antispyware and make sure the Status screen is selected
Next to Resident Shield press Change state so that the status reads inactive
Close AVG Antispyware

Temporarily disable Trojanhunter Guard
  • Find the Trojanhunter Guard icon in the lower right corner of your screen - it's is a light blue magnifying glass icon with a red handle
  • Right click it and select Settings
  • Uncheck Load at startup and Enabled

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please print/save a copy of the following instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Next, reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please confirm the uninstalls you performed and post the new SmitfraudFix report along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi mcinnis,

Please open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://search.bearshare.com/sidebar.html?src=ssb
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: Need2Find Bar BHO - {4D1C4E81-A32A-416b-BCDB-33B3EF3617D3} - C:\Program Files\Need2Find\bar\1.bin\ND2FNBAR.DLL (file missing)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://kl.bar.need2find.com/KL/menusearch.html?p=KL
O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {2AB289AE-4B90-4281-B2AE-1F4BB034B647} - C:\Program Files\RXToolBar\sfcont.dll

If you removed Party Poker then also check these lines:
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folder:
C:\Program Files\RXToolBar
If you have trouble finding or deleting this, please let me know in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
