Continually getting new infections - reopening

Unread postby Crunge » March 2nd, 2008, 10:46 am

This is a continuation of the closed thread found here: http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=27645. I travel nearly full time and was unable to perform the last task requested before the thread was closed.

On Sunday, February 24, I ran a scan with Spyware Doctor and it was clean. I then left for a week and the computer was not used during that period. Sometime during that week, Spyware Doctor ran an automated scan and picked up Trojan.Virtumonde.

On Saturday, March 1, I cleaned up Trojan.Virtumonde and scanned again. No infections. I then performed the Kaspersky scan requested and it was clean (see attached file.)

So in short, here's where I am:
- I am running AVG Professional AV, Comodo Firewall, and Spyware Doctor with OnGuard.
- Despite the machine sitting idle for a week, it picked up a Trojan, at least according to Spyware Doctor.
- I had turned off the Remote Desktop capabilities to see if that was the problem.

I'm still at a loss as to how these continue to get on the machine. Any additional scanning tips would be appreciated.

Crunge,
I am not a mystic, but I don't think you have any malware on your system

If Spyware Doctor identifies anything else, set it to not remove or delete, and you can upload the file to Jotti at
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
and find out if it's really infected.
I really think you are seeing false positives from Spyware Doctor (it does lots of them).

With MalwareBytes Anti-Malware on there, your need for Spyware Doctor is (to be gracious), marginal.

Askey127,

Thanks for the help. I have already sent an email to PC Tools asking for a refund on Spyware Doctor (I did so today, day 28 of my 30 day money back guarantee, so I'll see how it goes.) I'm currently conducting a full scan with the Comodo Firewall scanner. After that, a full scan with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware.

I also hope to see SD tag something as a problem and before removing it, run MBAM and see if it also picks up the same thing.

Sure. Be certain to check updates with MBAM before running its scan.

Spyware Doctor is not incompetent, but it has a bunch of heuristics that sometimes flag files as infected.
The occurrence is not uncommon among anti-spyware apps.
