Hello, yesterday morning i signed onto my computer and discovered i had some type of virus or something, it keeps putting spy and malware removal and error cleaner icons on my desktop and trying to get me to download removals and cleaners, am also having trouble connecting to internet, and a big red x keeps flashing at the bottom of my pc by the clock, so my boss at work suggested i download something called hi-jack this and so i was then directed here for help, i am having a window pop up with a system alert every 5-10 minutes telling me my computer has this worm.win32.netsky.so here is my log information from my scan , can anyone please help, thankyou for your time>

Hello, and welcome to Malware Removal Forums.
My name is Matt and I will be assisting you with your malware issues.
Please be patient as I need some time to review your HijackThis log and I will post back recommendations for repairs.
As I am still on training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by a Teacher. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any questions or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you! Not having symptoms of malware doesn't mean that you are clean!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.

Hi again

Please post the log created by Malwarebytes Antimalware.
It can be found in the following location:
C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

I appreciate the fact that malware is very annoying, but please wait before doing anything on your own as this can be dangerous and means that any help I give may not have the desired effect!

Please also post a new HijackThis log. Please do not attach logs to this thread, use copy/paste to make the text as part of your reply.

Hi
Thanks for those logs. Are there any more logs for Malwarebytes Antimalware? If so please post all of them.
Please remember I can only help you fix your computer if you follow my instructions. Please be patient and do not follow advice in other topics or forums as it may cause my fixes to not work. Hopefully, then we'll get this resolved quickly :)

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Please open Malwarebytes Antimalware
  • Click the Update tab
  • Click Check for updates (there is a new version available)
  • Once the update is complete, click the Scanner tab and select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and paste it into your next reply.

Re: how to remove worm.win32.netsky

Unread postby mjq424 » February 23rd, 2008, 6:13 am

Hi

Please open HijackThis
Click Scan Only
Place checkmarks against the following (if found):
Close ALL open windows, especially browsers
Click Fix checked

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6u4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

DownLoad CCleaner

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder,
back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner to clean temp files from your computer.

http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?f=2

Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted.
(If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.

  • Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click "OK"
  • CCleaner will scan and clean your system.
  • When cleaning is complete:
  • Click "Exit".
  • Repeat for all usernames.

In your next reply please post a new HijackThis log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Hi
Don't worry about the Java, that version seems to have been taken off their website, and it appears that you are running the latest one.
Please follow the rest of my instructions

Hi
You have uninstalled your previous Java version (1.6.03). I suggest you go here and reinstall it.

Otherwise your computer looks clean :D

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME/XP/Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

    Reset System Restore.
Now you should disable System restore to purge any infected files and then re-enable it,

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
    Restart your computer

    Turn ON System Restore

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  5. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  6. Install WinPatrol - Download and install Winpatrol by BillP Studios.
This program can monitor what software start with Windows. You can delay startup for some programs and stop malicious programs from starting up. It can also view some hidden files.
    Download it from here
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D
  8. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  9. Install ThreatFire - Download and install ThreatFire. This program defends against malware by detecting certain malicious behaviours. It is configured "out-of-the-box" and acts as a complement to your Antivirus software. It can be downloaded here:
    PC Tools ThreatFire
  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
