Hi :).

Dell computers are quite good for most given uses. I have both a desktop and notebook and they have performed/served myself well. They always have some form of special offers available also, plus you can change the specifications of any computer you order to suit.

If you are thinking of a Dell, take a look in the outlet shop.

They have the returned machines - those where ordered and they were not as ordered - or perhaps had small faults, such as scratches.

They are often lots cheaper than the standard price, but you may have to wait for the right model to show up.

They have the outlet shops in the UK and US, not sure about elsewhere.

If you are looking for DIY, I will recommend MSI motherboards. :)

I am biased towards AMD CPUs. :D

But if you prefer Intel, go for Core 2 Dual or Quad Core if you have the money.

You need to look at the specifications of the motherboard to see if it supports the CPU.

Honestly... I'd stay away from DELL. Not that their builds are terribly bad or anything. My first PC was a DELL and for all intent purposes it was a good PC.

But...

When I wanted to upgrade some stuff in it I ran into issues with DELL's proprietary connections and whatnot. That didn't please me. From what I understand its till the same way.

Personally I like ASUS motherboards. Rock solid and great for expanding/upgrading/overclocking. Nothing but Intel CPU's for me... Core 2 DUO or Core 2 Quad is what I would suggest. Go with at least 2 Gigs of RAM too... I like OCZ :)

I actually happen to have an MSI motherboard complete with an Intel Dual Core CPU on the way, should be here this week. I can let you know how it runs after put together if you would like.

My last one was a Gigabyte mobo with an AMD...lasted a couple of years and the mobo crashed last week.
Needless to say I'm steering clear of AMD from now on.

I also had problems with a Dell PC years ago, with their proprietary connections. I swore off Dell PC's soon after that. If you look to possibly do any upgrading, I would definitely recommend a DIY.

Personally I like ASUS motherboards.

My last build has been rock stable at 25-45% overclock with an open box asus motherboard for over 2 years now. Amd's were king of the hill back then. Asus either way.

CPU Properties:
CPU Type AMD Athlon 64 3500+
CPU Alias Venice S939
CPU Stepping DH-E3
CPUID CPU Name AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+
CPUID Revision 00020FF0h

CPU Speed:
CPU Clock 2249.91 MHz
CPU Multiplier 9.0x
CPU FSB 249.99 MHz (original: 200 MHz, overclock: 25%)
Memory Bus 249.99 MHz

Temperatures:
Motherboard 26 °C (79 °F)
CPU 29 °C (84 °F)
GPU 38 °C (100 °F)
GPU Ambient 32 °C (90 °F)

My main computer is aASUS with a AMD CPU 2*100GB HDDs, and 2GB memory. Been rock steady and is workibg on its third year now. Had to rebuild the system once but it had nothing to do with the MoBo or the CPU. Software problems unrelated to Malware. That also happens, specially when you are experimenting.

a little better than a core 2 duo

the only cpu better is a quad core, and they are pricey and run hot

core 2 duo's are the highest rated dual core cpu's

P35 Neo2 seems great. Remember to buy a graphics card since graphics is not integrated on Neo2.
