How to remove Downloader.MisleadApp from my computer?

Unread postby pfge » February 4th, 2008, 12:03 pm

Need help!

My computer was infected by Downloader.MisleadApp (called by Symantec) or isfmm.exe and isfmntr.exe

Norton identified those as
1.Downloader.MisleadApp in C:\Program Files\Video Add-on\isfmdl.dll
2.Trojan.Zlob in C:\Probram Files\Video Add-on\uninst.exe

But I could not find these files to delete.

Norton's auto-protect could only block and delete the repeating appearance of Downloader.MisleadApp in C:\Windows\temp\

I also found:
1. The files (isfmm and isfmntr) in C:\Program Files\Video Add-on\ were unremovable.
2. I used Norton, Windows Defender, Kaspersky, Ad-aware and A2AntiMalware to fully scan my computer, but all of them could not remove isfmm.exe or isfmntr.exe from registry and ActiveX control list.
3. IE homepage was changed as "about:blank" and could not be changed to other webaddress.

How can I remove them?

Re: How to remove Downloader.MisleadApp from my computer?

Unread postby Katana » February 7th, 2008, 9:53 am

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly :D

I apologize for the delay in responding, but as you can probably see the forums are quite busy
and sometimes a post manages to slip by us.
Unfortunately there are far more people needing help than there are helpers.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

SmitFraud Fix
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\\Documents and Settings\\Username\\Application Data\\Malwarebytes\\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\\Logs\\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Please post all logs in reply

OK, I will let the MBAM team know about that.

Installed Programs
Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed.
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

Please can you post a fresh HJT log along with the installed programs list.

Re: How to remove Downloader.MisleadApp from my computer?

Unread postby Katana » February 7th, 2008, 6:33 pm

AntiVirus
You appear to have Symantec and Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0
First you should know that you're actually doing more harm than good by running more than one Anti Virus program.
When you do this the programs compete for resources, and the end result is none does it's best and can cause system instability.
I recommend that you choose one that you want to keep.
The other/s I would either uninstall, or disable from startup and use as "on demand" for an occasional scan.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check for any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.

Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partne ... bscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Allow the ActiveX download if necessary
Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

Please post the Kaspersky log in your reply.
How are things running now ?

From http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp,
I only found
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4
The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

It is Java SE , not J2SE.
Is this one you suggest me for updating ?

Thanks again.

My computer's windows could not open the downloaded file "1202330905000-integrated.jnlp".

The windows suggest using internet service to find the right program to open it.

But I just deleted the old version before I tried to open this file.
Any suggestion?

There looks to be a problem with your download. Please download it again
The file should be jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe

Hi, Katana

1. Video Add-on\isfmm and isfmntr in C:\Program Files\ were removed.
2. isfmm.exe or isfmntr.exe has gone from registry and ActiveX control list.
3. IE homepage can be changed to other webaddress.

By following your instructions,
1. Java was updated as suggested
2. ran Kaspersky online scan as below:
3. Are those locked and skipped objects safe?

Re: How to remove Downloader.MisleadApp from my computer?

Unread postby Katana » February 8th, 2008, 3:28 pm

That looks fine, the only items it found were the tools we have used.
The locked items are just files that are being used by the machine at the time they were scanned, they are safe.

The IE trusted zone lines that show in HJT, did you add them ?
I would not recommend anything being in the trusted zone, unless it is absolutely needed.
If you want to remove them please do the following.

Fix With HJT
Close all other windows and then start HiJack This (right-click run as admin)
Click Do A System Scan Only
When it has finished scanning put a check next to the following lines IF still present
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://onestep.finairport.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.finairport.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.polaris.com.tw
O15 - ESC Trusted Zone: http://*.update.microsoft.com

- Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)-
Now click Fix checked
Click yes to any prompts
Close HijackThis

I reported the problem to the MalwareByte's team, and the bug will be fixed in the next release

Congratulations your logs look clean :D

Let’s see if I can help you keep it that way

First lets tidy up :D
Delete SmitFraud Fix and any logs we have produced
Empty your recycle bin

Reset System Restore.
Now you should disable System restore to purge any infected files and then re-enable it,

Turn off System Restore.
Click the Vista/Start icon
Right Click Computer
Click Properties.
Click the System Protection tab.
Uncheck All drives
Click "Turn Off System Restore" at the prompt then click "Apply",
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore
Click the Vista/Start icon
Right Click Computer
Click Properties.
Click the System Protection tab.
Checkmark All drives that were selected previously
then click "Apply",
Restart your computer

The following is some info to help you stay safe and clean.
( Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing )

Online Scanners
I would recommend a scan at one or more of the following sites at least once a month.

http://www.nanoscan.com
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan ... ncipal.htm
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partne ... bscan.html

AntiSpyware
AntiSpyware is not the same thing as Antivirus.
Different AntiSpyware programs detect different things, so in this case it is recommended that you have more than one.
You should only have one running all the time, the other/s should be used "on demand" on a regular basis.
Most of the programs in this list have a free and paid versions,
it is worth paying for one and having "realtime" protection, unless you intend to do a manual scan often.
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< A must have program
    • It includes host protection and registry protection
    • A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
  • MalwareBytes Anti-malware <<< A New and effective program
  • a-squared Free <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
  • AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <<< A good "on demand" scanner
  • superantispyware <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner

Prevention
These programs don't detect malware, they help stop it getting on your machine in the first place.
Each does a different job, so you can have more than one
  • Winpatrol
    • An excellent startup manager and then some !!
    • Notifies you if programs are added to startup
    • Allows delayed startup
    • A must have addition
  • SpywareBlaster 3.5.1
    • SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
  • SpywareGuard 2.2
    • SpywareGuard provides real-time protection against spyware.
    • Not required if you have other "realtime" antispyware or Winpatrol
  • ZonedOut
    • Formerly known as IE-SPYAD, adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers and marketers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
  • MVPS HOSTS
    • This little program packs a powerful punch as it blocks ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
    • For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002.
    • Not required if you are using other host file protections

Internet Browsers
Microsoft has worked hard to make IE.7 a more secure browser, unfortunately whilst it is still the leading browser of choice it will always be under attack from the bad guys.
Using a different web browser can help stop malware getting on your machine.
    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
If you are still using IE6 then either update, or get one of the following.
    • FireFox
      • With many addons available that make customization easy this is a very popular choice
      • NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons are essential
    • Opera
      • Another popular alternative
    • Netscape
      • Another popular alternative
      • Also has Addons available

Cleaning Temporary Internet Files and Tracking Cookies
Temporary Internet Files are mainly the files that are downloaded when you open a web page.
Unfortunately, if the site you visit is of a dubious nature or has been hacked, they can also be an entry point for malware.
It is a good idea to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder on a regular basis.

Tracking Cookies are files that websites use to monitor which sites you visit and how often.
A lot of Antispyware scanners pick up these tracking cookies and flag them as unwanted.
CAUTION :- If you delete all your cookies you will lose any autologin information for sites that you visit, and will need your passwords

Both of these can be cleaned manually, but a quicker option is to use a program
  • ATF Cleaner
    • Free and very simple to use
  • CCleaner
    • Free and very flexible, you can chose which cookies to keep

Also PLEASE read this article.....So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.

Happy surfing K'

Katana:

Thank you very much for solving my computer problem so promptly. In addition, the advise for computer protection is highly precious. Everything is OK right now.

I also followed your suggestion to delete the webaddress in trusted zone, adjust the IE setting,.......

There are two more quick questions for you.

Is it good if I put on Norton, A-squared, and Winpatrol at the same time?
Is it fine to add firefox or other webbrowser in Vista system?

Winpatrol is good with everything :)

A-Squared is Antispyware, Norton is Antivirus so they should be happy together.

I am using a Vista machine, and use Firefox for all my surfing
