For some reason my computer seems to have slowed to a crawl with anything I try to do, whether it's when I'm on the internet or just opening up and working in standard applications (Windows Explorer, Word, etc.). It seems to have started when I downloaded and installed the Security suite of products provided to me by my ISP (RoadRunner). The Security Suite consists of a Firewall (EZ), AntiVirues application (AV) and Pest Control from Computer ASsociates (CA).

Your problem may well be related to installing that security suite, not because of the suite itself, but because it was installed over Zonealarm firewall and Symantec AV.
You now have two AVs running. Choose between Symantec and the Security suite, and Uninstall the other one. Use Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
After the Uninstall, Reboot your machine.

Move HijackThis into its own folder. It is now in a temporary folder whose contents may get deleted. This would destroy the backups made by HiJackThis.
To make a new permanent folder: Go to My Computer, doubleclick C:
- Click File, New, Folder
- type in HJT
You now have a new folder at C:\HJT\. Copy all the HijackThis files from your present location into the new folder.

Download and install CCleaner from here.
Run CCleaner. Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected. Choose the Windows tab. Check everything EXCEPT cookies, and Autocomplete Form History and the Advanced part of the Menu. Choose Run Cleaner. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.

Remove kbd registry entry with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KBD] C:\HP\KBD\KBD.EXE
Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.

Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder. In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish. Please paste the contents into your next reply.

Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer.
Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the Installed Program list. Please do not use Word Wrap when you paste in the reply.

I have followed all of your instructions below. I first attempted to remove the Symantec AV program from my Add/Remove Programs utility, however the Remove process prompted me for a Symantec AV Uninstall password, which I was unable to locate. As a result, I decided to keep the Symantec AV v9.0, and remove the Compoter Associates AV program that was provided to me by my ISP instead. Currently, I am running only 1 AV program (Symantec), 1 Firewall (Computer ASsociated EZ Firewall), and my computer seems to be working MUCH better.

Galitz,

If Logitech Desktop Messenger is not a favorite of yours, I would remove it. (from Control Panel, Add/Remove)
It is NOT malware, but sometimes utilizes excessive resources. Your choice.

Move HijackThis into its own folder. It is now in a temporary folder whose contents may get deleted.
This would destroy the backups made by HiJackThis.
We need to have the backups available.
To make a new permanent folder: Go to My Computer, doubleclick C:
- Click File, New, Folder
- type in HJT
You now have a new folder at C:\HJT\. Copy all the HijackThis files from your present location into the new folder.

Start Your Computer in Safe Mode.
Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as the machine boots, until a menu shows up. Choose Safe Mode from the list. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Extra instructions are here if you need them.

File Deletion.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to this file. Use Find (F3) or Start, Search if the folder is not shown; then Delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
Note if you cannot delete.
Reboot your machine.

I have removed the last spyware file that you recommended in your last posting. Attached is my latest Hijackthis log. Since removing the files you recommended and disabling one of my AntiVirus programs, my computer has been running better. However, it is still a lot slower than it should be, especially when doing simple tasks like opening up Internet Explorer or just opening up a spreadsheet file or Word document. I don't know if all the Protection programs that are running (EZ Firewall, Computer Associates PestPatrol, Norton AntiVirus, etc.) is slowing my response time down or not.

Any ideas?

Galitz,

You are running Pest patrol AV and Symantec Norton AV at the same time.
Let's try one more time to remove the Pest Patrol AV.
If we are unable to do so, you may have to uninstall the entire eTrust suite and install the generic ZoneAlarm firewall as the companion to the Symantec AV.

Choose Run Cleaner. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.

Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.

Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.

This one:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
This Application Scheduler is installed along with RealOne Player and is running in startup, and is not needed.
Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player and consumes resources.
Having fixed this with HJT, you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself:
1. Start RealOne Player
2. Tools -> Preferences
3. Automatic services in the Categories pane
4. Uncheck all options and then OK

The Sonic update manager does not need to run at startup if you can do without it.

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

Galitz,
You have done a good job getting your machine back in running shape.
Just a couple things to help keep it that way:

Secure your Internet Explorer
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to - Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to - Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, clickEnable All Protection.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. Either of these HOSTS files is very capable. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions on the MVPS site.
