Hello, thank you, in advance, for your assistance. I may have already fixed the problem, but I don't know enough to know for sure.

When I installed the Norton update about 6 months ago, my computer became very sluggish. I used it for a few weeks and then attempted to uninstall it. It partially uninstalled and gave me a message about being unable to fully uninstall. So, periodically, it will do an auto scan as it did last week and these were the results:

v8kat,
Sorry for the delay. We've been swamped.
There is quite a bit to do here at first. Please just take it one step at a time.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis (or reveal.exe).
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe
O16 - DPF: {34F12AFD-E9B5-492A-85D2-40FA4535BE83} (AxProdInfoCtl Class) - http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/active ... rdtinf.cab
O16 - DPF: {4B9F2C37-C0CF-42BC-BB2D-DCFA8B25CABF} (PopCapLoaderCtrl Class) - http://zone.msn.com/bingame/rock/defaul ... oader1.cab
O16 - DPF: {644E432F-49D3-41A1-8DD5-E099162EEEC5} (Symantec RuFSI Utility Class) - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/Shar ... /cabsa.cab
O16 - DPF: {DBA230D1-8467-4e69-987E-5FAE815A3B45} -
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://zone.msn.com/bingame/popcaploader_v10.cab
O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe
O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop and Disable A Service
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find the service.

Folder Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to each folder shown below, highlight each one in turn shown in red, if found, and press Delete.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ <== this folder only
You may have to first open the folder, choose View, Details, and delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.
If you need to delete underlying files in a folder and are unable to do so:
Right click the file set for deletion, and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that,, note the name of the file, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Let me know how it goes.

v8kat,
Looks good.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  9. Click OK.
-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder shown below, select View, Details, highlight the listed file only, and press Delete.
Be careful not to delete any file without double-checking the exact spelling of the filename.

C:\WINNT\System32\gtdownls_95.ocx

If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and choose Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note if you cannot delete or file not found.
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from here . Choose the Slim version.
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
( Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
Please post the contents of install.txt in your next reply.

v8kat,
Some of the old versions of these programs are avenues for infection.
Adaware is just not useful when you have AVG Antispyware and SuperAntiSpyware instralled.
Same for Spybot, and the version you have is obsolete as well.
We will Uninstall all of these and then download new versions of Adobe Reader and Java.
If you don't actually USE the Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer, I would Uninstall it as well. It has become snoopy.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Program(s) with CCleaner
Open CCleaner. In the Left Pane, click Tools. Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
Click and Highlight the Following Programs, one at a time, and click the Run Uninstaller button for each one.
Wait for completion of each one before highlighting and Uninstalling the next.
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4
Ad-Aware 2007
Adobe Reader 6.0.1
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
Java(TM) 6 Update 3

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer. It is the 4th one down on the page, called Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4
Download it, choose save, and save it to your desktop. Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
-----------------------------------------------------------
You can download the new version of Free Adobe Reader here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This will keep you from accidentally becoming infected from a dangerous pdf file by using an old version of Acrobat.

Please Rerun the CClleaner Installed programs list, and post it along with a fresh log from HijackThis.

A couple of notes and then I'll follow with the info you requested:

Somewhere in this last process, 4 icons appeared on my desktop:
ZbThumbnail.info
~WRL0951.tmp
~WRL0001.tmp
~$-15-04 to do list.doc

I don't know if this is of any consequence, but I thought I'd let you know.

Also:
-I was going to ask which spyware/anti virus to keep...I started out with adaware and spybot only, but obtained the others while trying to solve this problem...knowing that I've probably got redundancies, but overwhelmed with the choices
-I do use Google toolbar a lot, but can do without it, if it's a known problem
-when I uninstall it, should I use something else for pop-ups?

Also, on the prior instructions you gave me, I forgot to post that this file was not found, therefore I did not delete it:

C:\WINNT\System32\gtdownls_95.ocx

I also noticed a lot of msn zone game entries...I've always thought those may be culprits (?), if so, I can get rid of those as the person who used them is no longer using the computer.

I will post the other logs after work. Thank you very much!

v8kat,
You have the Tango broadband access manager on there. Can you tell me anything about that ?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Program(s) with CCleaner
Open CCleaner. In the Left Pane, click Tools. Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
Click and Highlight the Following Program, and click the Run Uninstaller button.

getPlus(R)_ocx

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis (or reveal.exe).
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [getPlusUninstall_ocx] rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\WINNT\inf\GETPLUSo.INF, DefaultUninstall

Tango is associated with my DSL provider, Frontiernet.net. I noticed it a while back on the task manager as it seemed that it (file name: TANGOM~1.EXE) was taking up more than it's fair share of system resources (not that I would really know what it's "fair share" would be, but it seemed that way  ), but since it was related to the DSL provider, I let it be.

I searched and found:
**it on spywaredata.com listed as "safe"; and
**I found more info on this thread: http://www.castlecops.com/postitle62933-0-0-.html
**http://www.whatsrunning.net/whatsrunning/QueryProcessID.aspx?Process=6959

Bottom line is that I found several postings on forums wondering if this file was a part of their slowdown.

The computer is not running any faster and, possibly, slower, but I have to admit it's several years old (900MHz, 256 MB, HP Pavillion 7920), so it very well could be that it actually would be running faster had I not installed so many new anti-virus/spyware/cleaner programs in the last week. I do know I probably need to post on another appropriate forum to get advice re: startup programs and whether more memory would help me, or if it would be a moot point. I also need to seek guidance about which anti-malware programs I should keep.

Anyway, here is the Hijack this log:

v8kat,
First, there is no question that the slower operation of the PC is directly related , not to its age or processor, but the amount of RAM. With that many processes, the machine badly needs another memory card. Another 256Mb card or 512Mb card, would do wonders. And they are very inexpensive. I use a number of machines with that speed processor, and they are fine for most office duties and surfing. You can bring either the model of the machine, or the machine itself into a PC shop, and they can take care of it in minutes.

Those O16 lines you are asking about.... They are programs downloaded from websites. Most, if not all, COULD be deleted, since they would be downloaded again when you visit the site:
First one is for a webcam application from UCal Berkeley. Do you or did you have a camera on the machine?
Second one is to detect when an iTunes device is plugged in.

You can check either or both with HiJackThis and do "Fix Checked"

You can call Frontiernet tech support and ask if the Tango service is needed, or is only used for videos.

thanks for the advice on the RAM...that's what I needed to know...I originally doubled the RAM when I bought it and it was easy...I'll get the directions back out, check out the slots, and see what I have to do to add the memory. I have just held off because I didn't know if the processor was the limiting factor.

as for the webcam, I have to be honest, I am dealing with a husband and some Internet addiction issues, so I am trying to do a clean sweep and get any malware off that he may have inadvertently picked up in his travels. At this point, I'm suspicious of anything because of it....but, we don't have a webcam, nor do I think there's been one connected to the computer---but, stranger things have happened :? It could just be a link sent by a family member (one whole side is Bears Alum.)....I hope, anyway :|

I'm going to try and do the RAM after school (elem. teacher)...so I will try to see if that helps. I'll also call Frontier (exercise in futility) as I tried to use their "24 hr LIVE TECH CHAT", but a "representative was not available." lol.

Other than that, does the HT posting look ok?

Thank you, again, for your generosity in helping people like me. This malware epidemic is scary for the layperson and, although I used to sell specialized computer software, I am no sysadm and don't have the foggiest about where to start when trying to make a clean sweep. Thank you, askey127.
