Hi tanadin,

Are you experiencing any symptoms or do you have reason to suspect infection?

There are some uninstalls to consider:
Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 2
These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 4) from here

You have DAP installed on your system, it is not technically malware but the free version is ad supported and not recommended.
A safe, ad-free alternative is wxDownloadfast
You can remove DAP via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.

You have LimeWire and Azureus, P2P file sharing programs installed on your computer. These programs do not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove them, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove LimeWire and Azureus via Add/Remove Programs.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log. Also let me know how your computer is behaving at present.

Re: My Windows Starting and Closing Page fonts changed

Unread postby tanadin » January 18th, 2008, 5:29 am

The symptom that makes me think I have a virus will be :
1. Windows system font change (Starting page, Shutting down page, Internet Explorer Window Font, etc)
2. My norton anti virus keep blocking an intrusion from different source (the latest one will be MSN ASN 1 Integer Overflow TCP originating from 124.81.201.63, 3083)
3. My computer performance slowed down

Anyway, here's my Kapersky log

Re: My Windows Starting and Closing Page fonts changed

Unread postby silver » January 18th, 2008, 6:10 am

Hi tanadin,

Regarding the font change, please tell me precisely which fonts have changed. For example, the Internet Explorer font - are you referring to the Title Bar - which is on the same strip as the minimize/maximize/close buttons? To the menu items File, Edit, View etc? When during the startup process is the changed font seen?

If you are connected to the internet directly via a modem, it is not unusual to receive some 'bad' inbound packets which can be safely ignored. Have you only just started receiving these sort of notifications?

It appears that you have installed Avast antivirus in addition to Norton Antivirus. Running one antivirus program is essential, but having two can cause conflicts, slow your system down and even cause stability problems without improving your security. You should use just one antivirus program and if you want an "2nd opinion", use an online scanner like Kaspersky's.

If you have two antivirus programs installed, then before proceeding, please remove one of them.

We'll do some further checks for malware to see if there is anything which could explain the slowdown:

Next please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Then download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the Blacklight report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Re: My Windows Starting and Closing Page fonts changed

Unread postby tanadin » January 18th, 2008, 6:57 am

Hi silver,

My changed font was notice during the Windows Login Page at the text "To begin, click your user ID" and during Windows shut down on the text "Windows is shutting down".

For my Internet explorer was on the Title bar same location as maximize, minimize bar. But after I uninstall Avast, the font came back normal. Only the Windows starting and shutting session remains.

Below is my F-Secure Backlight Log

Re: My Windows Starting and Closing Page fonts changed

Unread postby silver » January 18th, 2008, 8:04 am

Hi tanadin,

Just one thing to fix up:

Fix file associations with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and then press Scan
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes that appear and press Fix
  • Then close Deckard's System Scanner

You can now delete DSS.exe from your Desktop, and also this folder:
C:\Deckard

There's no sign of malware on your machine, so I think the slowdown has other causes. To get further help I recommend you post on a PC troubleshooting forum like PC Pitstop. PC Pitstop specializes in handling problems like this so you are certain to get expert assistance and a speedy resolution is very likely. I'm sure they will also be able to help you resolve the font issue faster than I can.

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

You're welcome.

I think the only 'old' Eudora available now is a 'sponsored mode' version which is adware so I recommend you avoid it. Also, it's no longer being developed so any security problems won't be fixed. I don't think this is a safe choice.

There is a new version of Eudora being developed by Mozilla but I believe this is basically Thunderbird with some cosmetic changes. Thunderbird (and therefore the 'new' Eudora) is being actively developed and security fixes are automatically installed regularly so I would consider it a safe choice. There are also lots of add-ons available to customize the program which you might like to check out.

Outlook Express is also a safe choice however I would recommend upgrading to Windows Live Mail which is it's newer replacement as any new features will appear only in this version. You must however make sure you keep this program updated with security fixes. The only proviso would be that any attacks against email clients are more likely to focus on these products as they are the most widely used. This doesn't make them less safe, but it could be argued that there is more chance of an actual attack.

They are both good choices but quite different products so I'd suggest you try them both out and use the one you like the best. There is some risk using any application which accesses the internet, but if you use one of these and keep it updated I think you're unlikely to have problems.
