trojan horse virus - may be winshow.exe malware

Unread postby seattleguy » December 22nd, 2007, 10:56 pm

Hi,
I am not sure how I got infected with several virus, like trojan horse and winshow.exe malware. Suddenly my avast software gave me warning about several trojan horse but unable to take any productive action when I asked to delete it. However, it did system scan at startup.

I still have doubt that something is still hiding in computer and trying to change my IE home page but winpetrol is trapping every time when it occurs. So I need your help to find out is there any any hidden malware / virus still exist and if yes, how to fix it..

Thanks much in advance for all your help and time. Marry Christmas to you all out there.

Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Finally, please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    • Start HijackThis
    • Click on the Config button
    • Click on the Misc Tools button
    • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop and post the contents in a reply to this topic. Also post another fresh HijackThis log as it's been nearly five days since you posted the first one (situations can change fast).
Greets, John.

Unread postby John B. » January 3rd, 2008, 8:31 am

Hi,

Happy New Year! I'm sorry for the delay but I didn't get notified about a reply so I feel lucky I checked this topic for replies manually.

Nothing wrong in your HijackThis log, but a lot of remarks and updates to do. We'll also do some scans to make sure you're clean.

First of all I want you to make sure that you're allowed to do this with your system. There are some signs that this computer could belong to a company, so I just want to make a remark that if it's owned by a company that you check your policy on computer maintainance.

Step 1: Disable Teatimer
Please disable Teatimer as it may interfere with the fix.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Step 2: Disable one of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
Avast
Norton Internet Security

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, it runs in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Please disable one or the other so they do not conflict. Note that if you're going to disable Norton Internet Security you should leave the firewall running or you'll have to download a third-party firewall.

Step 3: Update HijackThis
You aren't running the latest version of HijackThis. Please update it.
  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Close it.
Step 4: Update Java
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
Step 5: Run CCleaner
CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!
  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    • In the Windows Tab:
      • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
      • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
      • Clean all entries in the System section
      • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
      • Clean any others that you choose
    • In the Applications Tab:
      • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
      • Clean any others that you choose
  • Click the Run Cleaner button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit when done.
  • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO
CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

Step 6: Run Kaspersky Online Scan
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Step 7: Download and Run ComboFix
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Step 8: Post logs
Please post the following logs in a reply to this topic (use multiple posts if needed):
  • Tell me what you disabled
  • Tell me if you know about any restrictions related to Internet Explorer. In your log is a sign of a restriction which could be set with programs like Spybot - Search & Destroy. Did you set the restriction yourself (or parents/company) and do you want it to be removed?
  • Fresh HijackThis log (with update version)
  • Kaspersky log
  • ComboFix log

Hi John,
Thanks much for your reply. I followed everything as you suggested. Here is my response:

--- Tell me what you disabled --

I disabled all available On-Access scanners. However, Microsoft security shows my anti-virus software is not enabled. Note: I do not have Norton Internet Security. I uninstall long time back.

--- Tell me if you know about any restrictions related to Internet Explorer. In your log is a sign of a restriction which could be set with programs like Spybot - Search & Destroy.

I am sure about any specific restriction that I made purposefully. May be Spybot - Search & Destroy did some default setting which I am not aware of. But any tips are most welcome.

--- Did you set the restriction yourself (or parents/company) and do you want it to be removed?

Well I am not sure what you are asking.

--- Online virus scan:
I do see several issues in log file as online scan found several virus/trojon horse. Please advice me how I can fit it.

All logs are attached.

Re: trojan horse virus - may be winshow.exe malware

Unread postby John B. » January 7th, 2008, 1:29 pm

There are some suspicious folders, so I designed a file to look into the folders and produce a log. To make sure I did that correct I asked it to be approved by somebody who's more experienced with these kind of files. Please be patient.

Hi,

The folders seem to be malicious anyway, so we can go on.

You aren't running Firewall Software. Please download and install one of them first!

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound/outbound not sure). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
Comodo
Kerio

As you did this, we can begin with the fix.

Step 1: Remove HijackThis entry
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside the item listed below (if present):

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/mywaybiz
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step 2: Download and Run OTMoveIt
Download OTMoveIt by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ardCo02
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cpd1
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dj2
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ll9
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\to9

  • Click the Move It button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
  • A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).

Step 3: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Step 4: Post logs
Please post the following logs in a reply to this topic (use multiple posts if needed):
  • Tell me how your computer is running
  • Fresh HijackThis log
  • OTMoveIt log
  • Kaspersky log
Greets, John.
