Unread postby JackP » November 29th, 2007, 12:50 pm

Hi, my computer is three years old this coming christmas, it is starting to get slow whislt loading the desktop. I have 4 users on this computer, loading to the login section on windows is fine, once you have logged in however it takes a long time to be able to actually use the computer.

I think it may be due to the shire weight of software loading but i want to make sure.

Hi JackP,
When you answer your own post, it takes it out of the Unanswered category, where helpers look to assist.
(They thought your post had been answered).
Also, next time you post a HiJackThis Log, please include the top of the log. :D
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from here Choose the "Slim" version.
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
( Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------
Using Internet Explorer, Please Do an Online Scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
Go here to run an online scanner from Kaspersky.
  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

(Since the top of the log was missing, I can't tell if you have IE7 or not)
Please post CCleaner's install.txt and the contents of KAV.TXT from your desktop.

Cheers for the help Askey :)

Didnt realised i had missed anything off of the log, but yes i do have the latest version of IE.

From the CCleaner it seems the people i have got the computer from have been looking at things they shouldnt judging by the cookies. Ive had the computer for a week and 5 days now, havent had time to sorting anything liek the cookies, spyware, virsus software ect out yet but i thnik i will now to make sure its all cleared. They already had a few programmes but looks liek they wernt used very often.

The virus scan found 4 major threats, but i couldnt see anyway in which to remove them with it? OR do i have to do this manually. Anyway here is the log for CCleaner, i cant upload the log for KAV because thefilesize is too big and if i paste in here the post size is too big lol

JackP,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Skipped Items From Kaspersky Log
Download Fixedit and save it to your desktop.
Double click Fixedit.exe, use File, Open and open C:\KAV.txt.

After the file loads, switch to the tab labeled "Make Global Changes"
In the upper RED block, click the button labeled "Contains the Test Key anywhere"
In the middle box labeled "Test Key Text", type Infected
In the lower GREEN block, click the button labeled "NO change in the line, except spaces in place of tabs".
At the bottom of the page Check the box labeled "Retain only lines that pass the test parameter, discard the rest".
Then Hit the OK button.

Switch back to the tab labeled "Show/Edit Current Text"
Select the entire modified file (Ctrl-A), Copy (Ctrl-C) and Paste (Ctrl-V) the contents of the file in your reply.
Use Edit, SaveAs and save to your Desktop as KAV2.txt
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please post the contents of KAV2.txt and also post the full text of install.txt instead of attaching them.
Thanks,

Re: Sluggish Startup

Unread postby askey127 » December 9th, 2007, 8:57 am

JackP,
There is a fair amount to do here. Please just follow step by step.
You have a lot of programs starting automatically. That will slow things down.
Let's remove some from startup. Except those we Uninstall, others are still available from Start, All Programs
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis (or reveal.exe).
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_08\bin\ssv.dll
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_08\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Steam] "c:\valve\steam\steam.exe" -silent
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LogitechDesktopMessenger.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DAEMON Tools] "C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools\daemon.exe" -lang 1033
O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LogitechDesktopMessenger.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office Fast Start.lnk = C:\MSOffice\Office\FASTBOOT.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjava.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjava.dll
O18 - Protocol: bwfile-8876480 - {9462A756-7B47-47BC-8C80-C34B9B80B32B} - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\GAPlugProtocol-8876480.dll

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Peer to Peer File Sharing
Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking (BitTornado, Azureus, Morpheus, Limewire, etc.) and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.

When you use Peer-to-peer (P2P) programs, you are downloading software from an UNKNOWN source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. It's hardly surprising that many of the available downloads are being used by malware purveyors as a delivery method for their infections. Further, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realize. See here : http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html

Even if you have one of the SAFE P2P programs, the practice of file-sharing is very UNSAFE for the health of your PC.
You may decide to continue P2P sharing, but keep in mind that this practice may be the source of major PC infections.
Better ask yourself if you and your system CD are REALLY ready to reformat your Hard Drive and Re-install Windows.

The risks of using P2P programs are described here in this Sourceforge webpage and in this Information Week article.
Some malware help forums are now refusing to help those who show up with infections from P2P usage.

I think you should stop using and Uninstall BitTornado, and Limewire, but it's your decision.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Program(s) Using Control Panel
I am including Messenger Plus Live in the list of removals. The related "sponsor programs" deliver a LOP infection. Unless you use it, and are willing to reject the sponsor programs with every update, I strongly suggest you remove it below.
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, (many of them may be missing) and choose Remove :
Adobe Reader 6.0.1
BitTornado 0.3.18
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
LimeWire 4.14.10
Logitech Desktop Messenger
Messenger Plus Live
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3

You should download and install the newest version of the free Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to vulnerabilities in earlier versions of reader and acrobat.
See here about the threat : http://www.adobe.com/support/security/b ... 07-01.html

You can download the new version of Free Adobe Reader here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This will keep you from accidentally becoming infected from a dangerous pdf file by using an old version of Acrobat.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer. It is the 4th one down on the page, called Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3
Download it, choose save, and save it to your desktop. Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis .
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

JackP,
Both of these are showing in your Installed Programs list
mIRC
MNB & TNB Chat

If you installed both of them, fine.
If either of them was NOT installed by you, you should go to Ctrl panel, Add/Remove programs and remove any you did NOT install yourself.
Kaspersky picks them up because IRC chat programs are often installed by outsiders and used as conduits for delivery of infections.
The other infected items in the Kaspersky log are quarantined and harmless.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reset Options in CCleaner for Regular Use.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. Then under Internet Explorer, Uncheck "History". In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Check Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set CCleaner to Run When Computer Starts. Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Settings. Check Run Ccleaner when computer starts.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable WinXP System Restore
Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing them. The only way to erase these files is to temporarily disable System Restore. You will lose all previous Restore points, including those likely to be infected, and a new Restore Point will be established..
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system.
You should be good to go.
