I've just looked back at your DSS log, Norton is a hefty program to be running with 256 RAM
I would suggest that you chose an AV that is lighter on your system

Re MasterMailer.exe, that scan isn't conclusive but if you don't use it anyway then I would delete it.

Delete the following.
C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\MasterMailer.exe <<< This File.

Now lets have a last scan to make sure you are clean, then we can work on that host file :)

Kaspersky Online Scanner .

Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Allow the ActiveX download if necessary
Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

Please post the report in your reply, along with a final HJT log.
If the report is too big to fit in one post, please split it over as many as you need.

Kasper & HJT logs

Unread postby ThisIsNotATest » November 9th, 2007, 9:30 pm

Thanks, I'll check into looking at a different AV. But before all the attacks, I haven't had any conflicts with running Symantec while processing or accessing my frequently used programs. It only appeared to hang when I was doing the combofix.

Anyhoo, here is the information you requested:

1. MasterMailer.exe deleted and removed from recycle bin
2. Kasper processed log created
3. HJT processed log created

Katana,

On the OTMoveIt, it was a success, however, I guess I was too excited when you said things were looking good and exited before I copied the results. However, I processed it again and the files indicate they are no longer found. I also, went to those locations and no longer see those files.

OTMoveIt:
File/Folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ISearchTechISTsvc2.zip not found.
File/Folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\YazzleSudoku.zip not found.
File/Folder C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\SmitfraudFix not found.
File/Folder C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\SmitfraudFix.exe not found.
File/Folder C:\VNCTEMP not found.

That's fine :)

Now that host file.....

Make sure you have HostsXpert on your desktop, if you haven't then download it again.

Navigate to
C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc <<< this folder

Right click on the Hosts file and delete it.
You will get a warning, click yes/ok

Next open HostsXpert and run the program
it should tell you -- "there is no host file, would you like to create one"
click yes

exit the program and let me know how you got on :)

I was able to delete and recreate the host file and here are the contents of that file:

# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a "#" symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
#
127.0.0.1 localhost

Congratulations your logs look clean :D

Let’s see if I can help you keep it that way

First lets tidy up :D
Empty your Recycle bin

Open OTMoveIt Click Cleanup,
it will now connect to the internet and get a list of files to delete.
When a box pops up click YES.

You can delete any logs we have produced

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK

Also PLEASE read this article

So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place

If you can see a program in the must have section that you have never seen or used then get it!

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.

Happy surfing K'

Please review my HJT, one more time

Unread postby ThisIsNotATest » November 10th, 2007, 11:07 pm

Hello Katana,

I completed the recommendations. I was able to complete windows update and set it for automatic, successfully. It appears that everything is running ok. I have installed the following:

1. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (still have Symantec, but will process it manually when necessary in addition to the AVG)
2. Lavasoft Adware
3. Spyblaster
4. Zone Alarm Firewall

Could you give me another once over on my HJT to verify everything still is ok? Thanks in advance.
