Unread postby RDSTILL » November 8th, 2007, 2:08 am

My mcafee detects this as "Adware-Zeno". Please help me remove. It has disabled my task manager (ctrl Alt Delete), email, and slowed my computer down. Here's my log:

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

_______________________________________________________
You have bigger issues than zeno .

It looks like you have been infected by a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we can't guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found
here

I suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

If, however, you decide that the computer is not used for any sensitive work, or if you do not wish to reformat at this time, I can help you clean your computer to the best of my abilities.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let me know what you decide to do in your next post.

Should you decide to clean this machine start by doing the following.

THIS IS IMPORTANT !!
You are running HJT directly from A temporary diectory.
Create a folder called HJT either in C: or My documents or some place convienient and place the
hijackthis.exe in there.
This will ensure we have back ups made and it doesn't get deleted .

DISABLE Spyware Doctor
It is a good program, but ... it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Smitfraud by S!ri

______________________________

  • Double clcik the smitfraud.exe
  • When promted
    Press any key to continue.
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with any others I have asked for in your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. When prompted by allow it to run

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!
If you do and smitfraud isn't present it will have undesirable effects

I was unable to complete all of the steps in your last post. I was only able to get to the point where you told me to boot my machine in Safe Mode. When I hit F8 during the bootup, it does indeed bring up a screen that asks me if i want to start in Safe Mode, so I select Safe Mode and press enter, and I am sent to a blue screen that states:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"

Driver_IRQL_not_less_or_Equal

Then below that it just basically tells me to attempt to reboot again, but everytime I attempt to boot up in Safe mode I get this exact same screen, so I wanted to check with you first before going any further to see what to do.

Thanks

It took some hunting, but I finally found the XP reinstallation CD.

Also just FYI, I just wanted to let you know some of the symptoms the virus is causing. I keep getting this error message saying that an upload of virus maps to McAfee's server has been blocked and the "application will be closed by Windows". Also, when i hit CTRL ALT DEL to pull up my task mgr, it says "task mgr has been disabled". Also, I was trying to view some pictures in my digital camera's program/software today, and none of the pictures will open from the thumbnail. and half the time, my Outlook will not open until i reboot the whole machine.

If I can not get computer to boot in safe mode, will there be any danger in running the steps from your previous post in normal mode??

Also I ran the system scanner as you requested, but, when i downloaded it, it began scanning system before i had a chance to even close this window. however, the scan did complete and produce the logs you requested. But one thing i thought you outta know, while the system scanner was scanning my system, my mcafee popped up an alert in the system tray that said it'd automatically found and removed a trojan. In my Mcafee even logs it calls it "FakeAlert-T (trojan)" with the address C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/VVGEOWBV.EXE. I didn't know if this was related to the system scan or what.

Here are the scanner logs:

Click start/ run and type in exactly:

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

Read the disclaimer and click OK.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Place a checkmark next to the following entries in case they appear:

    .bat
    .cmd
    .inf
    .ini
    .reg
    .txt
    .vbs
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Re-scan and save a logfile. By default, it will save as daft.txt
  • I'll need that log later.
If everything is ok again, it should display the "all associations ok message"

Post back with the contents of daft.txt.

Please download SafeBootKeyRepair

Save it to your desktop.

im going to try the safe mode now, but i just thought i'd get in one quick post before i reboot.

i think i did the DSS thing wrong. Your instructions above said after i do the first scan to check the items, then re-scan and post the log, but after i did the re-scan, this is all that is in the log:

DAFT Log saved on 2007-11-10 22:11:02
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
All associations okay!

I think what you were wanting was the first log BEFORE i re-scan. sorry about that. the instructions above threw me off a bit. hope that doesn't mess you up. let me know if there's a way to retrieve that info.

Here is the log from the safeboot fix:

Let's try one more tool to fix safe mode.

  • Download avz4en.zip
  • Unzip it to a folder on your desktop
  • Double click on AVZ.exe
  • Click on the file tab and then click on System recovery.
  • Put a checkmark next to Restore SafeBoot registry keys.
  • Click on Execute selected operations.

Let me know if this lets you boot into safe mode

ok, i've got the zip file downloading now (it seems slow, maybe that's the trojan). however, i wanted to ask you a general question to see if this is anything i should be concerned about. In my McAfee security center, under the recent even log, it keeps logging registry changes made to my system by the trojan, i assume. up until a few days ago when i got the trojan, there were barely any logs, however, since i got the trojan, there are at lease 4-5 changes a day done to my system. are these changes hurting my computer, and is all of this reversible?

sorry man, i ran the "avz4en" exactly as you directed, and i still get the blue screen when i try to boot in to safe mode. Tried it like five times. but let me mention one thing to you to see if this means anything.

Ok -- everytime i select "safe mode", a command prompt screen comes up and it looks like the system is loading all of these different items (each one ends in drivers\xxxxx). however, every single time i try to boot into safe mode and this command prompt screen comes up, it appears it gets "stuck" on the same exact item every time. it reads as follows:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(0)(2)\windows\system32\drivers\agp440

the reason i say "stuck" is because all of the other line items speed by on the screen very quickly, but it stops at this point, hangs there for about 4 seconds, then the blue screen appears.

i just thought this might be worth mentioning.
