tanyasm,

I missed notification on the original log. I will archive that one and continue here.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Run AVG Anti-Rootkit Scan
Download the AVG Anti Rootkit© by Grisoft Setup file and save it to your desktop.
Double-click on avgarkt-setup-1xxxxx.exe (the x's are the exact version number), and run it.
Click I Agree to the License Agreement (EULA).
Let it Install to the default location.
Click Next to begin the installation then click Install
It will then ask you to reboot now to finish the installation.
Click Finish and your computer will reboot.
After it reboots, double-click on the AVG Anti-Rootkit Free icon that is now on your desktop.
Click on the Perform in-depth search button to begin the scan.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it complete.
When the scan is finished, click the Save result to file button.
Save the scan results to your desktop
Copy and Paste the contents of the scan results in your reply.

At the end of the scan, if a box pops up and says "Scan Finished. No rootkits found" then the "Save result to file" button will be grayed out.
In that case just post a note that nothing was found.
----------------------------------------------------------
Got to Start, Run and type cmd and hit <Enter>
When the command window comes up, type :
chkdsk c:
hit <Enter> again.
Maximize the command window, and wait for the scan to finish.
Read the results carefully to see if it says that it found problems with your file system.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
IF it has found any problems with your file system,
Go To Start, Run and type cmd
hit <Enter>
Type this into the command window at the prompt:
chkdsk c: /F <==notice the /F, with one space between c: and /F
hit <Enter>
You will get a message that the volume is locked, and a request to do the repair on Reboot.
Answer Y
Then type exit to close the Command window.
Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Reboot
It will scan again and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.

After it reboots, run the first sequence again (without the /F parameter), and see if it still shows an error.
Tell me what it found originally, and if there was a problem, whether the final sequence showed no errors.

Hi,

I raned the AVG-Anti Root Kit and found no results. Then I did the CHKDSK and errors were found. I received a message that stated: " The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot Lock Current drive. CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? I said Yes. When I restarted the computer CHKDSK started verifying my files and when I tried fixing the errors by typing in CHKDSK C:/F. I got the same error message " The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot Lock Current drive. CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?" So, what do I do now?

Thank you,

Tanya

In Start, Run, type cmd to open a command window.
Then, in the command window, type chkdsk c: (without the /F)

When it's through, read what it says carefully, and See if it still found errors.

Erros found

Unread postby tanyasm » October 21st, 2007, 11:34 am

Yes, errors were still found. The message also says CHkDSK cannot continue in read only mode. It is saying the same thing I typed in the previous reply.

Thanks,

This means your hard drive is failing, and may not be around long.
This is likely the reason for unexplained behavior.

You should save as much data as possible from the drive onto external media such as flash drives, CD's or DVD's, and replace the hard drive in the PC as soon as possible. This type of thing usually gets progressively worse until it finally won't boot.

You are absolutely right!!! I went to Dell website and did a system check and Dell said I am running low on hard drive space. Thank you soooo much!!!! Is there anyway for me to delete files off of my hard drive for the time being? I cannot afford to purchase a hard drive just yet.

Thanks,

Go To Start, Run and type cleanmgr
Ask it to clean c:\ drive
Check everything except compress files and have it clean up.

Your best bet for recovering hard drive space is first to identify the files and/or folders with photo pictures or graphic images, and save them to CDs. Then delete them and empty the Recycle Bin..

You can check on the Free Space by going to My Computer, and right-clicking on C:\ drive, then choosing Properties

While you are looking at the Properties page, Uncheck "Allow Windows to Index this drive for Fast File Searching". If it asks whether it should apply to all files and folders, answer YES. Click OK twice. Wait for it to finish.

Reboot your machine and check Free Space again.
The Free Space needs to be over 15% of the Total, or Windows will have trouble.
