Hi! Welcome to the MWR forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.

Please be patient as my posts to you have to be checked before I reply, so they make take longer.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

re:uninstall list

Unread postby onlyfred » October 29th, 2007, 9:35 pm

Hi, Scotty, I submitted a reply but I don't think it went in, so I'm sending it again. I hope I'm not sending two replies. Thanks for helping me. I am sending my uninstall list as you requested. Here's some more info if it will help. I ran McAfee virus scanner, spybot and ad-aware also. I read somewhere about replacing the msconfig file with a new version, and when I did it would immediately be overwritten again with the old version. I don't know much about this stuff so I didn't want to do any more without help. My wife's computer was networked to mine and I disconnected it but it seems too late. Her's is showing the same symptoms as mine. Anyway, here's my list.

Hello

Remove programs from Add/Remove Programs List
Please go to:
  • Start
  • Control Panel
  • Add/Remove Programs
Find and remove these programs (if they are present)

  • My Way Search Assistant

I see that Viewpoint Media Player is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Media Player , click Remove.

Delete the older versions of Java and download the newest.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  1. Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  2. Click Start > Control Panel.
  3. Click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  5. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  6. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  7. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (4th one down the list), which is JRE6u3, and click Yes at the page warning, then accept the Licence Agreement before downloading the Offline file.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

      + Extended(If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:

      + Scan Archives
      + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post with a new HijackThis log.

Hi, I followed your instructions and was partially successful. I was able to remove Viewpoint Media Player but when I tried to remove My Way Search Assistant I got this error:
error loading C:\PROGRA~1\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\desrcas.dll
While I was at it I tried to remove Kazaa and got this error:
file "C:\Program Files\Kazaa Lite K++\unins000.dat" does not exist. Cannot uninstall.
I then successfully removed Java and downloaded the latest version.
I ran the Kaspersky online scan. The first time it failed and said I had to have administrative rights on the computer, which I do, but on the second attempt it worked. So here is the Kaspersky scan results followed by a new HijackThis log.

Hi

Navigate to and delete the following folders (if they are present)

C:\Program Files\Kazaa Lite

hijack fix

Unread postby onlyfred » November 3rd, 2007, 9:12 am

Hello, I deleted the Kazaa folder, the MyWaySA was not there. I found all three entries on the HiJack This scan and did the fix checked. The windows installer didn't try to start on reboot but I ran msconfig and still got the access denied error, that I have to be an administrator to change it. I haven't used the computer yet to say if there is anything else but I will let you know of anything that happens. Here is the logfile I ran after doing the fix and rebooting.

Hello

Try this. Disconnect from the Internet and disable McAfee then try msconfig. Or even uninstall McAfee and try it. That may be the problem. Let me know how it goes. Remember to reenable McAfee before going back online.

Hi, Scotty,
Sorry for the delay in responding. I disabled McAfee and there was no change but when I uninstalled it the msconfig error message was no longer there. What does this mean? Does McAfee stop me from changing msconfig or is it just an annoying message to put up with or a setting I can change? I guess it's to prevent McAfee from being changed? I don't mind as long as I can make the changes I want.

Hello

McAfee does seem to be a problem. Has reinstalling it cured the problem? If not, you might want to get into touch with their Support. I had a look around but couldnt find an answer.

Do you have a need to go into msconfig often anyway?

One of the programs I suggest at the end, Winpatrol, includes a number of functions, including one similar to msconfig, where you can disable or remove startup programs you feeel are unnecessary. I couldnt say if McAfee will stop that too, though. Reply to ask any questions.

You may wish to keep Kaspersky as an extra virus scanner but if not, it can be removed through Add/Remove Programs.

Yes, when I reinstall McAfee I get the error message again. I'll check with them about it. You're right, I don't usually use msconfig that often, usually just when I install new software that wants to load automatically at startup if I don't want it to. I just wanted to know it wasn't anything malicious. I guess everything is alright now. I thank you very much for your help. I learned a lot and will have my guard up better in the future and use some of the software recommended to protect my computer.

Hello

Here are some free programs I recommend, although you will not need them all.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here . Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install Spyware Guard
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Guard here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Make sure your Windows is ALWAYS up to date!

An unpatched Windows is vulnerable and even with the "best" Antivirus and Firewall installed, malware will find its way through.
So visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to download and install the latest updates.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed

OK, thanks for the info, I already have spybot and will check out the others and will be following your advice. I guess that's all for this one. Thanks again.
