Look2Me adware?

Unread postby castalos » October 10th, 2007, 3:04 pm

I recently purchased a SimpleTech External HardDrive.

During the installation of the Total Media Backup & Record software that was bundled with it, my Kaspersky Virus program (7.0) indicated that the following file had the Look2Me Adware.

c:\Program Files\INITIO\Button Manager v1.836\inih8747.rra

And it deleted it (after saving a backup though).

The One-Click button on the Hard Drive that initiates backups doesn't work and I think it's because it doesn't have this file. Yet I'm leary to recover it from the backup if it really has spyware in it. Your site seems to be the only one I've found in my searches on the internet for "Button Manager V1.836" that indicates it might be a false positive. I found a ton of other stuff on "Look2Me adware", that doesn't sound good. But I don't know if I have an issue or not.

I ran the HiJack software and here are my results...

Any suggestions/advice?
Thanks!
-Coleen

SORRY, but it appears we missed your post
When you posted a second time in your own thread before we answered, it took your request out of the Unanswered Posts category where helpers look to assist.

If you still need assistance, please post a fresh HiJackThis log as a reply here and someone will help you.

Hi castalos,
Do you know about Zero Error Networks in Alamosa Colorado?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
------------------------------------------------------------
Update your Java.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Java components.
  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE, J2SE, or Java Webstart in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all installed versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer
Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer. It is the 5th one down on the page, called Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3
Download it, choose save, and save it to your desktop. Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Spybot 1.3
Adobe Reader 7.0.9
<==this is NOT Adobe Acrobat 7.0.9 Standard

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis

Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the info about Zero Error networks.

Then we will do some in depth scanning to see what else is on there.

Zero Error Networks in Alamosa Colorado is my ISP (otherwise known as Amigo.net)

I've performed the requested actions & the New HiJack log is below.

However, I haven't seen mention about my initial inquiry which was regarding Button Manager v1.836 that was flagged by my Kaspersky Virus program as Look2Me Adware. Your site was the only thing I could find that indicated this was possibly a false positive. I am unable to use the One Click Backup on my External Harddrive without reversing that Button Manager deletion by Kaspersky, yet I don't want to end up with AdWare on my system if Button Manager v1.83 really has Adware in it.

Thanks,
Coleen

castalos,
Had to clean out some of the chaff to get a clear view.
The Button Manager is indeed flagged by Kaspersky as Adware. It's also flagged by F-Secure who calls it the same thing.
I think it's a false positive based on "heuristics", which is not surprising, since Initio makes, sells and distributes drivers, which are potentially system changing files.

I would retrieve the backed up file, or Re-install Button Manager. I don't think it's harmful. It's been out for several months and other AV's don't flag it.
You will have to look up how to tell Kaspersky to ignore it. Most AV's have an Ignore list or Whitelist you can add a file to.

Your log looks clean otherwise.
