Add/Remove Program Issue (among others)

I recently disabled a number of services including: Alerter, Background INterlligence Transfer, Clipbook, Computer Browse, Distributed Link Tracking, Indexing Service, Messenger, Netmeeting,Remote Desktop, Remote Access Connection Manager, Remote Procedure Call Locater, Remote Registry Services, Routing and Remote Access, TCP/IP NetBios Helper and Telnet.

There are 2 major issues that have resulted (the Ive found):

1) I am unable to Resume or Start any of the services I disabled. When I right click on the services I am not able to click on anything in the All Tasks list and when I click properties nothing happens. When I try to close the Service menu I get a message saying to "close all property pages before closing Services". There are no property pages to close.

2) Nothing loads in my add/remove programs option. When I go to settings/control panel/add/remove programs, the window pops up but there are no programs listed. All the options are listed across the top of the window like this: Change or Remove ProgramsAdd New ProgramsAdd/Remove Windows ComponentsSet Program Access and Defaults. I cant click on any of them.

My operating system is Windows 2000 and I think I have lost the cd during a recent move!!

I apologize for the delay in responding, but as you can probably see the forums are quite busy.

There have been a lot of people needing help recently, and you unfortunately have two things going against you

1) W2K is an "older" OS that some helpers avoid
2) You admit that you have turned these services off yourself, so your problems are somewhat self inflicted.

BUT having said that, help (hopefully ) is here
We are in with a fighting chance because I am using a W2K box myself


Deckard's System Scanner
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

1. Close all applications and windows.
2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply
