Virtumundo problem, HijackThis log

Unread postby Kirsten » October 14th, 2007, 1:11 pm

I got a couple viruses and a Trojan on Wednesday, and while my anti-virus (Sophos) was able to delete them, it keeps reporting that I have Virtumundo. I've tried fixes like VundoFix and VirtumondeBeGone, but they don't find anything. Also, AdAware and Spybot don't find anything either. Here's my log... hopefully someone can tell me what's happening. Thanks in advance!

Hi Kirsten

I'm Elrond and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please only use this topic for your replies on this problem. Do not start another thread.
Please note that the fixes we will use are specific to your problems on this computer and should only be used for this problem on this computer.
These things need to be properly researched and a complete fix for many malware problems can take some time and be spread over a number of posts, so please be patient and try to see it through to the end.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default) Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Please note that I will be off line for about 26 hours (sundown Friday until nightfall Saturday my local time) every week.

Now that the preliminaries are done with let's start the removal:

Open "HijackThis". Click on "Open Misc.Tool Section".
Use the scroll bar on the right and scroll down to "Open Uninstall Manager". Click it.
On the right you will find "Save List". Click it.
The log that you just saved will appear.
Use "Copy" and "Paste" to add it to your next post.

Download and Run ComboFix

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Run a new HijackThis scan and post the log together with the logs from "Uninstall Manager" and ComboFix.

Hi Kirsten

I can see that you are running Viewpoint. We usually recomend that you remove the view point programs. This is what they say about themselves.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

To remove Viewpoint please
  1. Click Start>Run type in appwiz.cpl and hit Enter.
  2. Select Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only) if you find it.
  3. Click on the "Add/Remove" button.
  4. If it asks if you really want to remove the program please click Yes
  5. If it gives you more than one option about what to do please chose Remove
  6. Repeat for the following programs.
    Viewpoint Media Player
    * Once the program/s are uninstalled, click on the "OK" button.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Open HijackThis and click "Do a System Scan Only" or "Scan". Put a check mark by the items that are listed below.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Close all open windows except HijackThis and then click the "Fix checked" button.
Close HijackThis

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

Code: Select all
File::
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\KirstenE\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\
PowerReg Scheduler.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ycbeg.bak1

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3}]

[*] Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

Image

[*] Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
[*] ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
[*] When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Run a new HijackThis scan and post the log together with the Combofix log.

Hi, I got as far as this step:

Elrond wrote:Open HijackThis and click "Do a System Scan Only" or "Scan". Put a check mark by the items that are listed below.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

ViewpointService.exe doesn't show up in HijackThis. Should I just continue on, or is something wrong?

Sorry  I missed adding that if something is missing just continue with the fix.
Some steps are done so that if some earlier step did not work it will still be removed. Simply insurance that the bad stuff really is gone.

      • Clean all entries in the System section
      • Clean all entries in the Advanced section

---------------------------------

AVG Anti-Spyware:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

---------------------------------------------------

Boot to Safe Mode.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print out these instructions.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware:

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
------------------------------------------

Go here to run an online scannner from Kaspersky.

  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log as "KAV.txt" to the desktop.
---------------------------------------------

Please run a new HijackThis scan and post the log together with the results from Jotti and Virustotal and the logs from AVG AntiSpyware and Kaspersky.

I'm sorry, I'm having problems with Safe Mode. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong... I'm following instructions one-by-one. Here's what's happening:

-When I select "Safe Mode" on the menu, it makes me select an operating system (Windows XP Professional) before I can continue.

-A list of random .sys files fill up the screen for about 15 seconds. It looks like this: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\random.sys

-Then an image with the following text appears and remains on screen indefinitely.
Out of Frequency Range
Attention
Out of range
H:29.2KHz V:55.8Hz

There is something odd going on. The list of odd entries is OK but that last entry is odd.

While I research that please run the AVG Antivirus skip the part about Safe Mode.

Hi Kirsten

It starts looking good. A few more things to do and then I will give you the address of a Web-site that are specialized in non-malware computer problems. The message that you got when you tried to get into Safe Mode has to do with your monitor and its settings.

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

Code: Select all
File::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\urqoljh.dll

[*] Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

Image

[*] Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
[*] ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
[*] When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Post the log and please tell me how your computer runs now. If nothing special happens we should soon be finished.

Hi Kirsten.

Now let us do some general cleanup and try to avoid that you need to come back.

  1. Go to Start > Run - type in ComboFix /u & click OK.
  2. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
  3. This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select drive will open. Click OK
    • Either a scan will open up and take a few minutes or it will go directly to Disk Cleanup for ...
    • Select the More options tab
    • Find System Restore. Click Clean up
  4. Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
    • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
    • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
    • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
    • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
    • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
    • Click OK
  5. Your computer now seems to be clean. Therefore please

    1. Clean out Temporary Files etc. Download System Security Suite from http://www.igorshpak.net/software/3ssetup104.zip. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and double click on sss.exe. Please check the following check-boxes under the Items to Clear tab:
      1. Under Internet Explorer
        • History
        • Temporary Files
      2. Under My Computer
        • Recycle Bin
        • Run (Menu)
        • Search History
        • Temporary Files
Next click 'Clear Selected Items'. Reboot when prompted. It is a good idea to do this every few weeks as a lot of junk collects there over time.
    2. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
    3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Once a day is a good idea). If you do not update your anti virus software it will not be able to catch new variants that come out.
    4. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Windows Firewall is not recomended.
Be restrictive with granting access to the internet. If you are unsure if the program really needs the access, test it by denying the access and see if this has any negative effects. If not, make the block permanent.
    5. Never run two Antivirus programs or two Firewalls at the same time. They can interfere with each other and cause problems.
    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently or better yet set computer for automatic updates.
    7. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
    8. Read and follow the sugestions given at this web site by Miekiemoes http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miek ... ntion.html that will give you more information on some of the points above.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
  6. Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.
    Image
Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Vundo. Please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

  7. To help you with the problem you encountered when you tried to get into Safe mode you should go to one of the forums that are mentioned below.
Tell them that you have just had your computer cleaned from malware and give a link to this thread for reference to helper that helps you.

Thank you for your help, Elrond! My computer is clean again. I really do appreciate all you've done. I definitely wasn't getting anywhere on my own. (Also, I will look into the monitor issue at one of the forums you listed.)

Thanks again! :)
