Got a virus, thought i fixed it, i was wrong. Please review

Unread postby jw2960 » September 20th, 2007, 11:32 am

apparently I allowed a virus onto my PC. I noticed something was wrong when program after program was asking to access the internet. I chose "always block connections from this port" to all of them except one. I allowed the one to pass because i thought i recognized the program. I was wrong.

The symptoms i am having is that auto-protect for Norton anti-virus can not load. It says, "internal error, auto-protect can not load." my computer then asks me to restart my PC in order to re-load Norton. When i restart i get the same response. I then uninstalled Norton and tried to re-load the whole program. about 60-70% of the way through installation i get another "internal error" and Norton asks to be unistalled and then re-installed.

also, during the pre-install scan that norton does it came upon a virus. i cannot remember the exact name but it had something like "bloodhound" in the file name. I was going to write it down but norton said it saved a .txt file with the info. I cannot find this darn .txt file. Norton also said that it had deleted the virus, but i am still experiencing the problems.

sooooo, after 2 nights of re-starting, re-loading, and re-scanning i have realized this problem is over my head.

my system:
P4 @ 3.2
2 GB RAM

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly :D
Rename HJT
Please open your Hijack This folder
  • Right click on Hijackthis.exe
  • Select Rename
  • Rename Hijack This to showme.exe
  • Double click showme
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button.

Please post the new HJT (showme) log in your reply

Hi jw2960,
VundoFix
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

it stalled

Unread postby jw2960 » September 20th, 2007, 8:30 pm

combo fix seemed to have stalled. i didnt click in the screen. eventually i pressed 2 to quit. afterwards i attempted to go back on the internet and re-run the software. when i got into IE i attempted to search for MRU as usual and now every time i hit enter i get an error and internet explorer closes. there is an error with :rhbntwg.dll

so i downloaded combofix to a memory stick from another computer and put it on my desktop. now when i run the program it says "COMSPEC ERROR, the above environment was found to be corrupt, please tell the person helping you"

hopefully i didnt dig a deeper hole.

Unread postby jw2960 » September 21st, 2007, 7:55 pm

i went to start up my PC today and it continues to come up with an error when trying to load windows.

"the operation requested could not be completed - lsass.exe"

i have a feeling this is bad.

Are you able to boot into safe mode ?

To reboot in safe mode
You can boot in Safe Mode by restarting your computer, then continually tapping F8 until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Do you have an XP install disc, or does your machine have a recovery partition ?

nope

Unread postby jw2960 » September 21st, 2007, 9:03 pm

my PC came with windows loaded so i do not have a install CD. i also do not have a recovery partition, maybe i should look into that. i had tried to boot into safe mode before the last post but when i tap f8 it asks me which drive i want to boot from and there is no option for safe mode...something i found fishy. i obviously have internet access, through my roomates PC.

My roomate just game me a Dell windows reinstall disc so i tried to boot with that. it did not work. first i inserted the disc and let the pc boot by itself, same error. then i tapped f8 until it asked which drive to boot from, i selected the drive the disk was in and it still came up with the same error. my pc is not a dell so that might have something to with it.

i am not sure if i can download a boot disk, ill look into it in the mean time?
thank you,
john

How many drives does it give you the option of booting from ?
The recovery partition may be classed as a secondary drive.

If the selection screen appears when trying to go to safe mode, select Last Known Good Configuration and see wont it boot up normal.

And don't panic, if you have access to the internet then there is every chance we can sort this :)

it gives me three options to boot from. they are:

1st floppy drive (3.5")
PM-optowritedvd rw dd1205
3m-wdc wd1200jd-00hbb0

those are the only options i am given after i tap f8. there doesnt seem to be an option to boot into safe mode(i have thoroughly looked at the screen that comes up and there is nothing else to choose other than one of those drives), am i missing something?

thank you,
john

Please try F5 instead of F8, this sometimes works to enter safe mode.
