STEP#1
Disable two of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\ISafe.exe
C:\Program Files\McAfee.com
C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer.
Having two or more anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, it runs in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running.
The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.
On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Please disable those and leave just one antivirus program.

STEP# 2
Download and run SDFix
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi. Thanks for the logs.
You have still three active antivirusprogram:
(From your HijackThis log I can see:)
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\ISafe.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MPFSERVICE.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exe

You can decide which antivirusprogram you leave, but please remove two of those.

Lets start:
You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode,
because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

== Step 1: Download ATF-Cleaner ==
Please download ATF Cleaner
    Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
    Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
    Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

== Step 2: Update your AVG Anti-Spyware ==
- On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
* Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
- Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
- Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
- Under "Reports"
* Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
* Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

== Step 3: Boot into Safe Mode ==
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
  • If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message.
  • To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

== Step 4: Run AVG Anti-Spyware ==
Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act?
      • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan?
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software:
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports:
      • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan?
      • Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
    IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
      Image
  • When done, click the Save Scan Report button. (4)
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

== Step 5: Reboot your computer ==
It'll automatically switch to Normal Mode.

== Step 6: Post logs ==
Please post:

avg anti-spyware

Unread postby rickchan6 » September 3rd, 2007, 2:13 pm

Hi Kairis,
I tried to follow your instructions exactly. Difficulty arose in Safe Mode when avg anti-spyware screen was too big for the display. (Perhaps I should have set avg-as for screen resolution before going into Safe Mode.) I was able to start full scan, but did NOT get a report, despite seeing in the Settings screen:

Checked: Automatically generate report after each scan
Unchecked: Only if threats were found

I list here the 2 items shown in Quarantine:
C:\Program Files\VideoAccessCodec\VideoAccessCodec.ocx infected with Trojan.Agent.aqj

C:\Documents and Settings\Rick\Local Settings\Temp\remove.exe infected with Downloader.Keenval.f

Before running Hijackthis, I terminated iSafe.exe, Mpfservice.exe, and avgamsvr.exe in Task Manager, but I do not know how to prevent them from autorunning on bootup.

Before I ran AVG anti-spyware, the PC was much better. It no longer showed cpu usage 100% in Task Manager. It no longer popped up spyware alert in TaskBar.

Hi. Thanks for the log.
You have installed McAfee SecurityCenter, which included antivirus and firewall.
I think the best choice is to keep it. But you decide. If you uninstall AVG7 and Yahoo!-Antivirus, use Add/remove function.

First of all, I recommend you uninstall the Morpheus Toolbar and MyWay since these are not recommended and actually spyware.
MorpheusBar is a toolbar that can negatively impact computer’s performance and stability.
It may make unwanted changes to your browser and may track browsing and search queries in order to display
contextually relevant search results and ads. MorpheusBar is a toolbar that can negatively impact computer’s performance and stability.
It may make unwanted changes to your browser and may track browsing and search queries in order to display contextually relevant search results and ads.

MyWay is a search toolbar that installs into Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, adding search functions and popup blocking.
It reports your surfing activity anonymously to MyWay affiliates, helping them to serve targeted advertising to you. As a BHO, MyWay shares the memory
that your browser uses, detects events, creates additional windows while you are surfing, and monitors your activity.
When a new browser window is opened, MyWay will send a configuration request about 5k in size.
The MySearch and MyWay variants have been bundled with Grokster, Morpheus, WeatherBug, and software from mgshareware.com.
MySearch has also been installed by the FavoriteMan parasite.
The MyWeb variant is bundled with software (Popswatter, SmileyCentral, My Mail Stamp) from “Fun Web Productsâ€

===========
I have not uninstalled the Yahoo antivirus yet, because I have not figured out how. It came from my DSL Service Provider. I do not notice any problems with this PC. (I am using Firefox browser & it is warning me about all the cookies being sent. I am using Internet Explorer only when necessary because of all the javascript weaknesses.) I understand that I should upgrade to Windows Service Pack 2, but I will wait for you to inform me that this PC is healthy enough to do so.

Thanks, Kairis!

You have a keylogger in your computer.(C:\WINDOWS\sysctrl.exe)

It is a component of WinGuard 3.0.

I have to ask you, did you install this keylogger by yourself?
If you don't, I have some bad news for you.
First - please don't panic about the warning - you need to understand the risks so you can make sure you aren't affected by what's happened.

Winguard 3.0 allows third parties to take over your computer with full access rights and view all files and folders,
including hidden ones, in your system. It can also collect personal information about you that can be used in
various crimes like identity theft.

We can likely clean the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be sure that
the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security
. In that instance, even after removal of the infection,
you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the Internet.

The Decision Whether to ReFormat or Not should be based on:
  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
  • The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
    IN THIS CASE we have a keylogger, the worst kind.
If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
  • If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information,
    please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable,Pin numbers, credit card numbers, account numbers, etc. should all be changed immediately
    and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to inform them of your situation.
  • This infection can attract others, keep it offline except when we are troubleshooting.
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay,

    online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker
    will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.

While you are deciding whether to ReFormat and Re-Install, a useful link is here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
Please let me know what you decide.

keylogger

Unread postby rickchan6 » September 10th, 2007, 6:24 pm

I have read carefully the link in your last post and considered the issues involved.
I would like to clean this PC. I will be using it mostly for non-Internet tasks. I will be leaving the network cable disconnected, and I will only connect it and use Firefox browser when I can't use my laptop.
Thanks again for your help, Kairis!

Hi.
== Run HJT Scan ==
Start HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SYSTEM CONTROL] C:\WINDOWS\sysctrl.exe

Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.
**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**¨''¨**
== Delete folders/files ==
1. Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if still present):
C:\WINDOWS\sysctrl.exe<==File

After all these done please empty recycle-bin.
2. Exit Explorer.

You wrote: I have not uninstalled the Yahoo antivirus yet, because I have not figured out how
Lets check your uninstall list:
3. LIST OF PROGRAMS USING HIJACKTHIS
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.

4.Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into a reply in this topic with a fresh HJT log, thanks.

I have not uninstalled the Yahoo antivirus yet, because I have not figured out how. It came from my DSL Service Provider.
I recommend that you uninstall it now. Follow the instructions:

You have AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
* Disconnect from the internet.
* In the bottom, right-hand corner of your Desktop is the System Tray and, within it, the AVG Antivirus icon.
* Right click the AVG Antivirus icon and select Quit AVG Control Center from the menu.
* Remember to turn it back on before you go back online
* Now Double-click on the AVG Tray Icon
* Double-click on "AVG Resident Shield"
* Uncheck "Turn on AVG Resident Shield Protection" then click OK.

Next, disable TrojanHunter Guard (it may hinder the cleaning process)
-> Disable TrojanHunter Guard by right clicking on the icon in your System Tray.
-> Make sure that the program, TrojanHunter itself, is also closed/not running.

== Disable/delete service ==

Please click Start > Run and type in: services.msc
Click OK
In the Services window find: CAISafe
Select/highlight and right click the entry, and choose: Properties
On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button
Beside: Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
Click Apply, then OK
Now, go to Start > Run, and copy/paste the following into the Open box:
sc delete CAISafe
Click: OK

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner

Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
  • Follow the Instruction
    Here for installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes,the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning
    (recommended)
    button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report
    in your next reply.

After you have completed the above, please provide:

* the F-Secure report
* new HijackThis log
* description of any problems you are having with your PC

problem with F-secure online scanner

Unread postby rickchan6 » September 19th, 2007, 9:30 pm

Hi Kairis,
I turned off the AVG Anti-spyware and the TrojanHunter. I deleted the CAISafe.
I was not successful in the download part of F-secure online scan. I did go to Internet Options->Security->Custom and enabled ActiveX and scripting. The download does sometimes start, but it does not get even to 1 MB out of 27 MB. I get the "Unable to download necessary online scanner components!"

Hi.
Forget the F-Secure...and try this:
Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
    Image
    If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Image
    This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
