Desktop hijacked

Unread postby jenster78 » August 13th, 2007, 5:50 pm

Hello,

I'm a bit new to this kind of forum, I hope somebody can help me. I somehow (not sure of where it came from) got desktop hijacker. I apparently hadn't updated Java quickly enough. I've now updated Java, and run Superantispyware. This threw up quite a lot of stuff which was then removed, and I re-booted. The logo is now gone from my desktop, but it is all white, and my icons are blue like they're selected. I've now run Hijackthis, and here is the log:

You are running the beta version of trend hijackthis

Follow the downloads link from the top of the forum and download the latest version of the trend hijackthis program.

The beta version had several bugs which were corrected in the later version.

Please provide a fresh hjackthis log when done and I will get a helper to assist you.

Hi jenster78 ,

Welcome to Malware Removal Forums.

As we work together to resolve your problem please read the instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them into Notepad.
If you have question please don't hesitate to ask
The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
Post your replies to this thread.

Since there may other issues with your system please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean."

Ready? Let's go.
*=========================*

Please download SmitfraudFix(by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.exe

Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Create Uninstall List with Hijackthis
This is how you do that:
Open HiJackThis
Click on the tab "Open the Misc Tools Session"
Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
Click on the button "Save list"
Copy and past the List from notepad into your post
*=========================*

Please post the following:
C:\rapport.txt
New hijackthis log
Uninstall list

Thanks,

Hi jenster78,

Open SUPERAntiSpyware
Click Check For Updates
After updating configure as follows;
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
  • Close browsers before scanning.
  • Scan for tracking cookies.
  • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
Close SUPERAntiSpyware. We'll use it later
*=========================*

Update SmitfraudFix definitions
Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #4 - Update by typing 4 and press Enter
Note: If there has been no more than a day since your downloaded SmitfraudFix there is no need to update.
*=========================*

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.
*=========================*

Boot to Safe Mode
  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, continually press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
*=========================*

Hello again. I can't seem to get Windows to boot in safe mode, which is odd because I've done it before. When I press F8 during start-up, I get to a screen asking me where I want to boot from, with a choice of 4 options. One of these is the floppy drive, and one seems to be linked to my mobile phone (Samsung) which is very odd. Do you need to know what the others are? No matter what I press, it asks me to re-boot, and insert the necessary device.

So I'm a little stuck right now. Otherwise it seems OK, IE sometimes opens itself (I don't normally use it) and there are still 2 icons on the desktop that I delete every time but which come back each time I boot up.

Is there another way to get directly into safe mode? I'll try again, and re-post here if I manage it.

Thanks,

Jen

Hi Jen,

Try the steps as outlined in normal mode and see how it goes.
After everything is completed see if you can get into Safe Mode and let me know.

Good morning Rogue,

Right, since I couldn't get into Safe Mode, I did all the above in normal mode. Then I rebooted and still couldn't get into Safe Mode. It keeps asking me something about the right boot device. In any case, here are thge logs you asked for:

There we are. So far this morning I've had no more pop-ups of IE, no more system alerts but my desktop pic has disappeared.

Look forward to hearing from you, and thanks again!

Hi Jen,
Sorry for the delay.

Start HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

O2 - BHO: MSVPS System - {283A0EE3-2CC1-45AB-8207-B1D7B69C7F83} - C:\WINDOWS\duocore.dll (file missing)

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
*=========================*

Download SafeBootKeyRepair by sUBs
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sU ... Repair.exe
Save it to your Desktop
Click SafeBootKeyRepair.exe
It shall only take a short moment for it to finish running.
A log will be produced at C:\SafeBoot_Repair.txt.
Please post that in your next reply.
*========================*

To restore your desktop picture
Right click on your desktop
Select Properties
Select Desktop tab
Select your picture from the list or use browse to locate a custom picture.
Select OK
*========================*

See if you can boot to safe mode.

Post a new hijackthis log for review.

Thanks,

Hi Rogue,

No worries for the delay. I still can't boot in safe mode, but maybe I'm doing something wrong? :oops:
Here's what I get when I try:

Please select boot device

1st FLOPPY DRIVE
PM-TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-H552U
SS-SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616Q
3M-Maxtor 6Y080M0

Whichever one I choose, the next screen says:

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key

In any case, here are the logs for today.

Hi Jen,

Everything I read about that message is hard drive or BIOS related problems. :(
So I have a couple questions. Have you changed any settings in your BIOS?
Is this a laptop or desktop and have you turned it off lately or have you left it on?
As for Safe Mode see what happens if you use F5 or F2 instead of F8.

Thanks,

Hello again.

Well, it's a desktop PC and I haven't been into BIOS since I really don't know much about that kind of thing. It gets switched off every night, although sometimes it runs most of the day and evening. When I shut down, I used to get a "ping" just before, like an error or something, but now that seems to have gone.

I'm almost afraid to ask - do I have serious problems?? I'll try again for safe mode and let you know.

Thanks,

Jen

I'm back again! I've managed to get into safe mode, using F5 and checking my keyboard settings.

Should I then repeat the steps you posted the other day in safe mode?

Thanks again,

Jen
