Win32.DNSChanger and Zlob.DNSChanger won't go away.

Unread postby Jonas Oldacre » August 15th, 2007, 6:32 am

Hi there. I'm very computer-stupid so please forgive if I'm doing this all wrong. Just tell me what to do and I'll do it!
So anyway I run my Spybot and find those two:

Win32.DNSChanger

and

Zlob.DNSChanger

and so I fix the selected problems and purge them, you know how you do. But then I run Spybot again and bang! There they are again. They won't go away. So okay, I got that Hijack this thing and here's my saved log:

Good evening. Welcome to MalWare Removal.

SmitFraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Please download SmitFraudFix from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on Smitfraud.exe
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter - a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Do not run any of the other options at this stage.

Please copy/paste the content of the report (c:\rapport.txt) into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a 'RiskTool'; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between 'good' and 'malicious' use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi.

SmitFraudFix is showing some of the problem but it doesn't look as if it will fix it. We therefore need to run a different tool. You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install. Make sure that Run fixit is checked and then click Finish. The fix will begin - follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer. Please do so (your system may take longer than usual to load - this is normal).

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Next, click on Start, then Run, type cmd and click OK. A command prompt (black window) will open.
Type ipconfig /flushdns (that space between g and / is needed)
Hit the Enter key, type exit then hit Enter again.

Now lets check some settings on your system.

Click on Start and then Control Panel.
If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double-click on Network Connections.
Then right-click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection, and left-click on Properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.

Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop. Using this program will remove temporary files, temporary internet files and cookies from your system, which will mean that any scans will run faster.
  • Make sure that all browser windows are closed
  • Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • Untick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
  • If you use Opera browser,
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the FixWareout logfile (C:\fixwareout\report.txt), as a reply to this thread.

Well that looks a bit better! :)

Before we go any further, I need you to disable SpywareGuard as it may interfere with our fix. Right-click the running icon of SpywareGuard in the system tray to open the program. Then go to Menu > File and choose Exit. It will automatically restart at next boot.

-------------------------------------------------

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: Offliner AdFilter Helper - {DC9377A2-2E8D-44A1-99DB-F8A821DF254D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\SiPlugins.dll
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [svcosvt] c:\windows\system32\svcosvt.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{87AA28D6-6D93-401A-B573-E8E902BDE287}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked. Reboot the computer

------------------------------------------------

Download OTMoveIt by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt (do not type it).
c:\windows\system32\svcosvt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SiPlugins.dll

  • Click the Move It button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
  • A log - C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).
--------------------------------------------

You appear to have installed an update to Java. This doesn't appear to have worked properly as you still have some remnants of the old version. I suggest that you uninstall all versions and re-install the new one.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all versions of Java (Java(TM), Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
---------------------------------------------

Please run Spybot and see if it still finds Win32.DNSChanger and Zlob.DNSChanger.

-----------------------------------------------

Please then run another HijackThis scan and post the following, as a reply to this thread:
  • The OTMoveIt log (see above)
  • A new HijackThis log
Please also let me know whether Spybot still finds those items.

Okay, good beynac -- I followed all your latest instructions and then at the last ran Spybot like you asked. It's not finding Win32.DNSChanger or Zlob.DNSChanger anymore! Woo hoo! Did we get 'em? Are they gone for good? Can we declare victory? Heh. Okay anyway so here's the logs you asked for. First, the MoveIt:

c:\windows\system32\svcosvt.exe moved successfully.
File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\SiPlugins.dll not found.

Created on 08/15/2007 17:07:07

Good morning.

Did we get 'em? Are they gone for good? Can we declare victory?

Answers: Yes - Hopefully - Not yet! :) The items which Spybot identified have gone and should not return. There is, however, one 'nasty' which is being obstinate (c:\windows\system32\svcosvt.exe). We deleted it successfully, but it appears to have reinstated itself. We need to fix the HijackThis line again and then run another scanner.

---------------------------------------------------

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [svcosvt] c:\windows\system32\svcosvt.exe

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

--------------------------------------------------

AVG Anti-Spyware:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

---------------------------------------------------

Boot to Safe Mode.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print out these instructions.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware:

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot in Normal Mode.

--------------------------------------------

Please run another HijackThis scan and post the following as a reply to this thread:
  • The AVG Anti-Spyware report
  • A new HijackThis log

Hi.

That file is being very stubborn. It shouldn't be that difficult to get rid of! We need to try another tool, but first I would like you to disable SpywareGuard again, and also CounterSpy and Comodo BOClean. I don't know how to switch off these two. If you have a problem, let me know and I will find out.

Once the programs have been disabled, please run ComboFix by sUBs
  • Download this file - ComboFix.exe
  • Close all open windows.
  • Double click ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply
Important: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

If necessary, please split the log into separate posts to ensure that they don't get cut off. It is important that I see the full log.

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.

Okay. I wasn't sure how to disable that stuff either, so I just removed them with the control panel's Add or Remove Programs thing. I still have the original exe. files here somewhere, so I can always just reinstall any of the 3 if and when, you know.
So then I ran the ComboFix, and when I went to check C:\ for the logfile, I found two text files left there by the program. Don't know if you want both? Anyway the first is titled "ComboFix-quarantined-files" and goes like this:

[code]
2007-07-23 22:20 0 --a------ C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\dllh8jkd1q8.exe.vir
2007-07-31 13:07 774 --a------ C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\DOCUME~1\MARYAN~1\Desktop\Internet Explorer.lnk.vir

Folder PATH listing for volume DYOOFIE
Volume serial number is DCB0-ED28
C:\QOOBOX
\---Quarantine
+---C
| +---DOCUME~1
| | \---MARYAN~1
| | \---Desktop
| | Internet Explorer.lnk.vir
| |
| \---WINDOWS
| \---system32
| dllh8jkd1q8.exe.vir
|
\---Registry_backups
[/code]

And the second text file is named simply "ComboFix" and goes like this:

ComboFix 07-08-14.4 - "Mary Ann" 2007-08-16 6:26:23.1 - NTFSx86

And there you go. I'm sorry my problem in being such a pill; I'm sorry to be taking up so much of your time. :( But thank you, again, for all the time you are spending on me. And needless to say, again I stand ready to follow your instructions!

There's no need to apologise. It's not your fault that the little swine is being awkward. :)

ComboFix found another couple of items and it looks as if the problem file (c:\windows\system32\svcosvt.exe) was actually deleted by OTMoveIt and it was just the registry entry which was reinstated. It's likely that it was one of your protection programs which was keeping it there! I think that we're getting there now. We need to remove another file and a registry entry. We'll also double check that that other one has gone.

-----------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
File::
c:\windows\system32\svcosvt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\madjaro.dll

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"svcosvt"=-

Save this on your Desktop as CFScript.txt

Image
ComboFix should also be on your Desktop. Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe. ComboFix will then run. When finished, it will produce a log (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running as this may cause it to stall

And there you are. Thank you for your kind attitude. That little swine is being awkward, isn't he? Anyway, thank you again for all your help, and of course as always: I stand ready to follow your next instructions! 8)

Hmm... it's still there. I notice that there is also an item relating to the old Java version in the log. It looks as if something is preventing the changes the registry. I would like to try to fix these two items. If the Java entry goes but our old 'friend' remains, we will know that something is protecting that particular entry. If neither of them go, it means that something is preventing changes to that registry key. If they both go, then we're done! :)

-------------------------------------------

Step 1:

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [svcosvt] c:\windows\system32\svcosvt.exe

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

Reboot the computer.

Please then run another HijackThis scan. If both of the lines have gone it means that we've done it! In that case please post the HijackThis log. If, as I suspect will be the case, either or both are still there, then we need to try again in Safe Mode.

-----------------------------------------

Step 2:

Important: If you have an 'always on' connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print out these instructions.

Boot to Safe Mode. To do this:
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting a menu appears.
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
Please run the HijackThis 'fix' as above and then reboot in Normal Mode. Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

---------------------------------------

Please post either the log produced after completing Step 1 or Step 2 and also let me know at what point the items disappeared (if either of them do!).

Okay, I tried it straight up and then through safe mode, like you said -- and it looks like they're both still there. Dammit, Jim! :x
Here's something I should've mentioned before perhaps; maybe this is why we're not making progress? (I did warn you I was computer-stupid.)
Anyway, as far as I know there is only one account on this computer, it's named R. J. MacReady (don't ask). It's the only account, so it is the administrator account, right? I mean, when I go to the control panel's User Accounts thing, there it is underneath the "or pick an account to change" with the words "Computer administrator" underneath it. The only thing next to it is the "Guest" account which says "Guest account is off" underneath it.
But then when I reboot the computer and flip into Safe Mode with F8, it gives me a screen with a choose your account kind of a thing, with a button for the R. J. MacReady account, and just above it a button for a generic, unnamed Administrator account. How does that come out of nowhere like that? And I can't log onto it even if I wanted to, because if I try it demands a password. I don't have a password, because I didn't even know another account was there. So of course I have to log into Safe Mode with the R. J. MacReady account (which I thought was the only account, the administrator account).
So maybe this is why I'm not being allowed to delete those two things? And if that's the case, how do I solve that problem? And if that's got nothing to do with it, then please disregard all that blather. Again, I did warn I was computer-stupid.
Anyway, here's the latest HijackThis log:
