Hello extra2k4...welcome to Malware Removal!

While winlogon.exe may indeed be a virus or 'baddie', it is also a legitimate and necessary system file...I would not mess with it until you know it is bad. The only instance of winlogon.exe I see in your HJT log is this:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe

This is the proper location for the legitimate winlogon.exe (MS) file. You can read more about this file here:

http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:x0 ... cd=1&gl=us

I notice that you have no Antivirus Program running on your system...in todays internet environment, this is inherently dangerous. I would recommend that you choose an AV product, install it and keep it updated. Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a paid version you might have, this is a must.

I do not see anything particularly malicious in your HJT log; I cannot however find any information about the following two files and their associated entries:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Theme] C:\Documents and Settings\Dano\Desktop\My Favorite Theme.theme

O4 - Startup: KillTT.lnk = C:\Program Files\KillTT\killtt.exe

Can you tell me what programs or applications they are associated with?

Let's do some general cleaning and scanning to check your system for malware...if the problem with winlogon is not malware related, it may be having a problem with something such as a corrupt system file...have you tried the MS system file checker?

1. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

2. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post, and give me some more information about the questions above..

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Theme] C:\Documents and Settings\Dano\Desktop\My Favorite Theme.theme

Is my own thing, auto loading my UI (cause windows blinds undoes somethings every time) so safe.

O4 - Startup: KillTT.lnk = C:\Program Files\KillTT\killtt.exe
again part of my ui, prevents the tooltip thingy like when hover over something

kk the problem is my Winlogon is constantly sitting at 50% cpu usage (cause dual core, other core is free for other programs) but frustrating the lag it causes. main reason for no AV is seemed to slow my machine down so much before, now wishing I had kept it.

Thanks for the information about those entries.

I'm not certain I'm going to have an answer for you regarding your high CPU usage by winlogon.exe....other than to say I highly doubt it's malware related. Your HJT log is clean, and the Kaspersky scan is sqeaky clean.

While I'm trained in malware recognition and removal, I am unfortunately not a MS Windows expert...so my ability to help you much from this point will be limited.

I can point you in the direction of some very reputable sites however that have WindowsXP help forums (Malware Removal does not)....

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows- ... NT-f5.html

and

http://forums.techguy.org/21-windows-nt-2000-xp/

One of these sites may be your best bet to try and solve your problem. You can tell the helpers on those forums that you have been here and no malware was found on the system.

Hope this helps, and if there is anything else I can do for you, let me know..
