Hidden malware, has to have internet connection

Unread postby FlyFishArcadia » August 11th, 2007, 4:40 pm

Have something which simply isn't removable by most means.

SYMPTOMS:
1. While operating a program, the window will go into the background and nothing pops-up, although it acts like a pop-up window has appeared.
2. When doing an Alt-TAB, a blank application window is visible, but no application name appears.
3. Norton Internet Security can't find it.
4. Ad-Aware can't get rid of it.

That's the problem.

FlyFishArcadia,
You may want to print this out, or save it as a Notepad document on your Desktop, since you won't have Internet access in Safe Mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Peer to Peer File Sharing
Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking (Shareaza, Limewire, etc.) and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur. Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true.
You may decide to continue P2P sharing, but keep in mind that this practice may be the source of major PC infections.
Shareaza itself is free of malware, but regardless of the safety of the program used, the practice of file-sharing is very unsafe for the health of your PC.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop, Disable and Delete A Service
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find the service.
Messanger <== notice the bad spelling of "messenger"
Click once on the service to highlight it.
Right-Click on the service. Click on Properties
Select the General tab.
Next to Service Status, click Stop.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side of the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click Apply , then OK
-----------------------------------------------------------
Delete the Service
Open HiJackThis. Click on Config, Misc Tools, Delete an NT Service
Type Messangers in the space provided and click OK
The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following folder (if it still is present):
C:\Recyclers\ <== notice the letter "s" on the end of the folder name. DON'T try to delete the folder C:\Recycler\
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
Tell me how your computer is behaving.

Great find - I had searched through the entire registry trying to find http:// codes that I didn't recognize to no avail. I think this did it! Any idea what that program did?

Also - any ways to speed things up by getting rid of unnecessary programs?

FlyFishArcadia,
That appears to be a new infection, so it hasn't been thoroughly analyzed.
Most trojans are designed to steal information, or force you to click on websites for which the purveyor gets paid..
It would be good for us to run one more scan to see if it installed anything else.
If it has been trying to access the Internet, to be on the safe side, I would assume it has been attempting to steal account numbers and passwords, and act accordingly.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DwlClient] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Dell\EUSW\Support.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe -startup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WMPNSCFG] C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe

Unless you use MSN Messenger, I would check this one also:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background
Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
When I instructed to Delete the Service, it appears I had a typo and wrote Messangers instead of Messanger.
The Service has been disabled, but I would prefer to remove it, so let's run that part again to make sure we get it.
Delete the Service
Open HiJackThis. Click on Config, Misc Tools, Delete an NT Service
Type Messanger in the space provided and click OK
The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
It is a stand-alone program that does not need to be "installed". Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe or your shortcut to run the program.
Under Main, choose Select All
Click Empty Selected

If you use Firefox browser,
Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
Click on Empty Selected
NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

When it tells you how much has been removed, click Exit to close.
-----------------------------------------------------
Using Internet Explorer, Please Do an Online Scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
Go here to run an online scannner from Kaspersky.
  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the contents of KAV.txt
