PC takes 10 mins to boot up?

Unread postby nora » July 31st, 2007, 5:28 am

Recently my pc started running incredibly slow. The boot up time is now 10 mins and the shutdown time 5 mins. Running firefox or IE explorer just after the pc has booted takes up to 3 mins to open, and even opening a folder takes about 30 seconds. I noticed that my pc started taking ages to shut down about a month ago and now the boot up has been affected. I have looked at various forums to try and resolve this and have tried the following:

Run ad-aware, spybot, AVG antivirus, I’ve cleaned the registry and have got minimal programs opening on start up.
None of these have made any difference.

One of the forums suggested running hijack software but I’m not sure what I can delete. I’ve attached the log file. It appears that some sort of malware can cause this slow down but nothing I’ve ran can pick it up. Can anyone
help?

In addition, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable WinPatrol
- Right Click the 'Scotty Dog' icon in the system tray
- Click Options
- At the bottom of the options page, Uncheck Automatically Run WinPatrol When Computer Starts
-Click the X to end program.
- Right Click the 'Scotty Dog' icon in the system tray again

  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
( Do not use the Issues block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.

Click on the Options block on the left. Select the Advanced button. Check "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner

In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NCLaunch] C:\WINDOWS\NCLAUNCH.EXe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [$Volumouse$] "C:\DOCUME~1\Aron\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.312\volumouse.exe" /nodlg

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the contents of CCleaner's install.txt from your desktop.

pc takes 10 mins to boot

Unread postby nora » July 31st, 2007, 2:14 pm

Thanks very much for the help. After doing everything you suggested, the shutdown time is about the same at 5 mins but the startup has reduced from 10 mins to 5. Also firefox and IE seem to open in normal time now.

Here is the new hijack file and CC cleaner file:

nora,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Peer to Peer File Sharing
Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking (Ares, BitLord, Kazaa, etc.) and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur. Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true.
You may decide to continue P2P sharing, but keep in mind that this practice may be the source of major PC infections.
Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer programs themselves is here : http://p2p.malwareremoval.com/
Regardless of the safety of the program used, the practice of file-sharing is very unsafe for the health of your PC.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

BitLord
Kazaa Lite Revolution 2.6 English
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------
Using Internet Explorer, Please Do an Online Scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
Go here to run an online scannner from Kaspersky.
  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt

-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the Kaspersky log (KAV.txt)

I have now completed the other items you suggested and here are the relevant log files.

Note: After my original reply, the problem seemed to improve, but now the start-up seems to be about 10 mins again? I noticed in the KAV virus scan it found a couple of things. Not sure if that is the cause?

KAV.txt:

NCLaunch is from Northcode's SWF Studio.
It comes with free screen savers, and has been known to be buggy.
Do you use it, or can we remove it?

Can you tell me about your use of the F:\ drive?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download Blacklight Beta from here:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/fsbl.exe
* Download fsbl.exe and save it to C:\
Go to Start, Run, copy in the following text and press Enter:
C:\fsbl.exe /expert
(space between fsbl.exe and /expert)

Accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked.
Click > scan, Then > next
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose Rename if something was found!
There will also be a log in C:\ with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stands for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

So looking for the fsbl log, any comments on your use of the F: drive, and SWF Studio.

I thought i'd deleted NC launch previously. I don't think it is there anymore?

I use the F drive to install almost all applications, photo's video and music. I try to use the C drive for the operating system only. Although there are probably a few programs on the c drive, most are on F.

I have run the blacklight beta and it didn't find anything.

Thanks

nora,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: 180search Toolbar - {93CECBB2-6B1B-448D-91B9-72604EF70105} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Check Disk for Errors
Go to Start, My Computer
Right click the icon for the C:\ drive and choose Properties
On the Tools tab, click Check Now.
In the Check Disk Dialog, don't check any boxes and click Start
This may take a very long time (hours). Don't attempt to stop the process until it's done.
It cannot be stopped except with the power switch.

You will see a report when it's done.
If it finds no errors it will just notify you that disk check is complete.
If it finds errors it will list them.
Please make a note of what it reports.

-----------------------------------------------------------
I don't see any further malware issues with your machine.

Please make sure that your C:\ partition has at least 15% free space.
Right click on C: drive from My Computer, and choose Properties.

Have you checked any forums about Siber Systems Roboform and slowdowns?

Thanks askey127,

I've completed all you have suggested (no disk errors) and will monitor the pc and see how it goes. Thanks very much for your help.
