Until a week ago my computer was perfectly fine but now my browsing speed and computer processing speed has slowed dramatically. I'm pretty sure its due to malware but it seems that all the antivirus, antispyware, antimalware programs aren't working or I simply have too many. I tried every free scanner there is and none of them resulted in anything. Please help me!!! I don't want to have to reformat my pc :(

Hi! Welcome to the MWR forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please be patient as my posts to you have to be checked before I reply, so they make take longer.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Hello

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
AVG and Symantec

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, it runs in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Please disable one or the other so they do not conflict.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. Then let me know what you wish to do.

Hi

Did you make a decision about Viewpoint? Let me know in your next reply, and if you dont wish to keep it, I will provide instructions for removal.

1 Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet
Security, then start that program and click Norton AntiVirus.
2 In the left pane, click Reports.
3 Click View Norton Quarantined and Restore.
4 In the left pane, select the type of risk that you want to remove.
5 In the right pane, select the files that you want to remove.
6 Click Delete Item.
7 When you see the message "Warning! Are you sure that you want to remove this
item from Quarantine," click Yes.
8 Close the Quarantine window, and then exit Norton AntiVirus.

Remove all items in Quarantine.

Now post a new HijackThis log.

I've decided to removed Viewpoint and I think I already did using the Add/Remove Program Application. Also I don't think I got Norton Antivirus...

Hiya

Replace the Norton with Symantec and delete the Quarantined items as described, and post a new HijackThis log, please.

Ok I've tried the full scans a few times already and it always ends up stopping on it's own then I can't even open Symantec anymore. What should I do? I also tried reinstalling the program but it still didn't help.

Hello

I assume you decided to stick with Norton? To get it working again, you need to fully remove the old, a difficult job manually, but Norton provide a tool for that.

Download and run this tool.
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?OpenDocument

If you dont plan to keep Symantec/Norton dont reinstall.

And you dont need to run a scan at this point. Just provide a new HijackThis log, please.

Hi

Does Symantec include a firewall? If so, you should uninstall the Outpost firewall.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):
WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Delete the older versions of Java and download the newest.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  1. Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  2. Click Start > Control Panel.
  3. Click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  5. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  6. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  7. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (4th one down the list), which is JRE6u2, and click Yes at the page warning, then accept the Licence Agreement before downloading the Offline file.

Now post a new HijackThis log and tell me how your computer is behaving.
