Hi Perkypen,

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Now use Windows Explorer to find and delete that file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipxokbro.dll

If you have any problems deleting it then please stop and let me know.

Next we can remove that LogMeIn entry:
Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogMeIn GUI] "C:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeInSystray.exe"

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please let me know if you successfully deleted that file, and post the Kaspersky log along with another HijackThis log.

I can not delete the file. "Access is denied" when I try File - delete.

Is there another way to delete it?

Hi Perkypen,

Please try this:

  • Open HijackThis and choose Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click the Delete a file on reboot... button
  • Copy/paste this file and path into the box and press Open:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipxokbro.dll
  • When asked to reboot now, say Yes

Once your computer has rebooted, use Windows Explorer to see if the file is still there and let me know.

Hi Perkypen,

This one is being stubborn!

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
cmd /c cacls C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipxokbro.dll >> "%userprofile%\desktop\cacls.txt"

A file called cacls.txt should appear on your Desktop, please post the contents in your next response.

Hi Perkypen,

We'll get that file in due course.

If the shortcut to LogMeIn doesn't work and it's not in Add/Remove Programs, the program has probably been removed. You can check by having a look in the C:\Program Files\LogMeIn folder for the program files.

We'll remove that LogMeIn startup entry:
Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogMeIn GUI] "C:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeInSystray.exe"

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Download ComboFix to your desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, please post it in your next response.

Once complete, please post the Combofix log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Perkypen,

Please keep ComboFix on your Desktop for now, we'll be needing it again shortly.

Please upload a file for scanning:
Open http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\upsexcmd.dll

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please copy and paste the results in your next response.

Note: If Jotti is busy, you can use VirusTotal instead.

You have a program called Messenger Plus! Live installed. This program comes bundled with malware, it's possible to install it without the 'sponsor' program but even so I recommend you remove this program anyway as the developer is spreading malware for profit - read more information about this here.
To remove the program open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, find Messenger Plus! Live and select Remove

LogMeIn may in fact still be installed. If you wish to remove it, first try clicking Start->All Programs, find the LogMeIn program folder and look for an uninstall link there.
If you don't find anything, then try using Windows Explorer to browse to it's Program Files folder:
C:\Program Files\LogMeIn (or similar) and looking for it's uninstall program.

Once complete, please post the Jotti scan results and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Perkypen,

We'll do the Kaspersky scan next:

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and another HijackThis log.

Silver,

Okay after alot of patience I have some bad news.

I downloaded the scanner and started running it. I found several virus and alot of infected files. It seemed to get stuck at 77% on a file that was a restart file (I hope I am remembering correctly). It took a little over an hour to get to this point. I left the computer to do something else and when I returned to it it had shut itself off. This is what happened when I ran the AVG .

So, would you like me to try the scan again and write down the number of virus and infected files that it finds before it turns itself off? Of course that will not tell you much.

Please let me know what you would like me to do......

Hi Perkypen,

I'm sorry to hear you had problems with that scan!

Try this instead:

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe

Next, reboot your computer in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8
A menu should appear, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press enter

  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and next to Infected objects select Move, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Select all hard drives to be scanned by clicking on them - choose all drives - a red dot confirms they will be scanned
  • Click the green arrow on the right to start the scan
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to move a file
  • Click File-> Save report list and save the report to your desktop
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit and reboot your computer (this is important as files may be moved/deleted during reboot)

Once complete, please post the Dr Web log and a new HijackThis log.

Silver,

Okay, Cureit ran for about one third complete. Or at least that is what it looked like with the time bar at the bottom. I ran it twice because I thought I did something wrong the first time. Well, I did not do anything wrong. The computer just shut itself off. It is kinda weird when it does that

So, what do you have in your bag of tricks. Hopefully, you still have several things left in there!!!

Awaiting your knowledgable guidance.....

Hi Perkypen,

The shutdown problem is very odd. Please try this:

  • Check that combofix.exe is on your Desktop
  • Then open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad and click OK
  • Copy/paste the contents of the below code box into Notepad:
    Code: Select all
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipxokbro.dll

    Folder::
    C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1
    C:\PROGRA~1\SECRET~1
    C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! Live

    Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\My Web Search Bar Search Scope Monitor]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\MyWebSearch Email Plugin]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\SecretSmileys]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\SunJavaUpdateSched]

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the Save as type to All Files and save it to your Desktop.

    Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!

Once ComboFix has completed it's scan, please then try running Dr Web once more, please make the same changes to the settings before running the scan:
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and next to Infected objects select Move, then press OK to close the settings box.

Once complete, please post the ComboFix log, the Dr Web log (if it worked), and a new HijackThis log.
