Need Vundo/Downloader Help

Unread postby Count23 » July 28th, 2007, 4:34 pm

Norton keeps finding and getting rid of Vundo and a Downloader, but after each re-start they come right back. I've run FixVundo and that got rid of it, but on reboot it was back. What do I need to do? Thanks in advance

Hello Count23,

Welcome to the MalWare Removal forums! I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  2. Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  3. Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly

-------------------------------------------------

You are using Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.0 (BETA). This the beta version.
Please uninstall Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.0 (BETA) and do the following.

I would like you to use this HiJackThis v1.99 for the infection showing in your log.

Please do the following:

Download HijackThis and save to your Desktop. Click HERE
  • Double click on HJTSetup.exeicon that is on your desktop and by default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check mark by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Follow all the prompts, click Finish, and let the installer start HijackThis.
  • Click the Do a System Scan and Save a Log File option.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log. Paste the log in your next reply.

-----------------------------------------------------

Disable program can interfer (block removal of infection) with HJT fix.
Open AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
  • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon (Bottom right corner of computer screen near clock) and uncheck Start with Windows
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 Tray Icon and choose Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

----------------------------------------------------

If you have downloaded Vundofix before please delete it now. We will need get a fresh copy to use.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

--------------------------------------------------------

Next do the following:
1. Download this file - combofix.exe and save it to your Desktop.
2. Close all open windows.
3. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
4. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. It is located >> C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings.

------------------------------------------------------------

Please post these in next reply to this thread by using the postreply button:

Hello Count23,

Thanks for posting logs.

Please do the following:

Sometimes malware will hide from HiJackThis so we rename it.

Here's what I need you to do:
Get to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe
  1. Click on Start button
  2. Click on "My Computer" .
  3. Double click on the C: drive to open.
  4. Double click on "Program Files" Folder to open.
  5. Double click on "HijackThis" Folder to open.
Rename HijackThis.exe
  1. Right click on the HijackThis icon.
    Image
  2. Select Rename.
    Image
  3. Now type the following scanner.exe <<< NOTE: make sure to put period before exe when typing.
Hit the enter key on keyboard.
    Image

You may want to create a shortcut on your desktop for easy use here.
  • Right click on the newly named icon Scanner.exe and choose Send To...
  • Click on Desktop(create shortcut)
  • Done.

Close all open windows and double click on Scanner.exe icon that you put on your desktop to run.
Click on Do a system scan and save a logfile. Post log in next reply.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Save this as CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Question

Unread postby Count23 » July 30th, 2007, 5:33 pm

I began to follow the steps you listed but I do not have egbsedn.dll on my hard drive anymore. In fact, whenever I reboot, I get an error message saying that egbsedn.dll cannot be found.

Should I continue with the rest of the steps, ignoring egbsedn.dll?

Yes, I was able to submit sauoovbn.dll. Should I be concerned that I no longer have egbsedn.dll?

My logs are below...thanks!

Hi Count23,

Yes, I was able to submit sauoovbn.dll. Should I be concerned that I no longer have egbsedn.dll?

I'm glad you where able to submit one. I am still researching the other I will let you know.

This is next:

Delete the CFScript you have now we need to make another one.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
NOTE* make sure to only highlight and copy what is inside the code box nothing out side of it.

Code: Select all
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lggkpecj.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\aadgh.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\aadgh.ini2

Save this as CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.
Image

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Please do the following:

Download OTMoveIt by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sauoovbn.dll

  • Click the Move It button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • When finished click Exit to exit the program.
  • A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).
  • Post the log back here please.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop. Don't run ATF yet. Will do it a bit later.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

  • Under Main choose:
    • Windows Temp
    • Current User Temp
    • All Users Temp
    • Cookies
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Prefetch
    • Java Cache

      *The other boxes are optional*
    • Then click the Empty Selected button.
    Firefox:
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.
    Opera:
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next:

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
NOTE* You must use Internet Explorer for this scan to work.

1. Once you are on the Panda site scroll to the bottom of page and click the "Scan your PC" button NOTE: If you have a popblocker enable you will have to allow popup here.
2. A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
3. Enter your Country
4. Enter your State/Province
5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
6. Select either Home User or Company
7. Click the big Scan Now button
8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes. You may have to reboot here and start back with step 1. I did.)
10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
11. Post Panda scan results in your next reply with others requested.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please post in next reply:
Combofix.txt
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).

Problems with Firefox

Unread postby Count23 » July 31st, 2007, 6:54 pm

After running the programs for the previous logs, many of the sites I regularly go to, will not display in Firefox. On YahooSports, it only shows the top portion of the window, and on ESPN the display is completely out of whack. Is there a setting that you know of that was changed by one of those programs, and if so, do you have any idea how to get it resolved? The same sites view fine on IE, but I really don't want to use IE if I don't have to. Thanks

First will need to cleanout cookies that showed up in online scan.

For Mozilla FireFox Version 2.0
  • Click Tools from the FireFox menubar.
  • Choose Clear Private Data....
  • In prompt that pops up make sure to put a Checkmark in these boxes:
  • Browsing History
  • Cache
  • Cookies
  • Authenticated Sessions
  • Click Clear Private Data Now button.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me know if you are able to view websites now?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next please do the following this online scan may show things panda didn't.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Notice!
A new version of Kaspersky Virus Scanner has been released on August 8, 2006. If you have installed a previous version, you must unistall that program first before installing the new version. To uninstall, please go to the computer control panel and select "Add/Remove Programs." Close all Internet Explorer windows before uninstalling the Kaspersky Online Scanner.
Note* You must use Internet Explorer for the scan not Firefox if you have it.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save Report As button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • File Type: Text file (*.txt).
    • Name: Kav.txt for example
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  5. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  6. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  7. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  8. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  10. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  11. WinPatrol - WinPatrol uses a heuristic approach to detecting attacks and violations of your computing environment. Traditional security programs scan your hard drive searching for previously identified threats. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be removing dangerous new programs while others download new reference files.
    • Detect & Neutralize Spyware.
    • Detect & Neutralize ADware.
    • Detect & Neutralize Viral infections.
    • Detect & Neutralize Unwanted IE Add-Ons.
    • Detect & Restore File Type Changes.
    • Automatically Filter Unwanted Cookies.
    • Avoid Start Page Hijacking.
    • Detect changes to HOSTS & critical system files.
    • Kill Multiple Tasks that replicate each other, in a single step!
    • Stop programs that repeatedly add themselves to your Startup List!
Starting with WinPatrol 9.5 PLUS users also get the addition of Real-time Infiltration Detection so they'll know immediately when changes are made to critical system areas. WinPatrol Free is not demo or trial software. You're welcome to use it as long as you like.
    You can download WinPatrol here
    WinPatrol FAQ
  12. Hosts File - A Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad, spyware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
A tutorial tutorial can be found here
    • MVPS Hosts File
You can download the MVPS Hosts Filehere
Furthermore the website contains useful tips and links to other resources and utilities.
    • Bluetack's Hosts File and Hosts Manager
Essentially based on the research made by Webhelper, Andrew Clover and Eric L. Howes, it contains most if not all the known spyware sites, sites responsible for hijacks, rogue apllications etc...
      Download Bluetack's Hosts file here
      Download Bluetack's HostsManager here
  13. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.

Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Vundo please post as a reply, you will need to register to do so. It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

Unable to delete quarantined items

Unread postby Count23 » August 1st, 2007, 5:58 pm

I am unable to delete most of the contents inside the quarantine folder. When I hit shift + delete it gives me an error message saying that "The directory is not empty." Pressing delete brings up an error message saying the file is write-protected/in use by another program.

Suggestions?

Hi Count23,

See if you can delete them by opening norton

I am not sure if these instructions are for your version of norton.

Using the Norton AntiVirus Quarantine Feature
What does it mean when Norton places a file in 'Quarantine'?

When Norton AntiVirus detects an infected file, it tries to do two things with it. First, it tries to clean the file and restore it to the original state. If that fails, Norton will 'Quarantine' the file. This basically means that it moves the file into a protected area where it won't cause any more harm. At this point you can choose to either delete the file from Quarantine or restore it.

You can delete files that are in quarantine by following these steps:
    1. Open Norton AntiVirus by double clicking the 'Shield' icon located in the right hand bottom corner of your computer screen.
    2. Double click the 'View' folder. It is located on the left side of the Norton AntiVirus window. This will expand the folder and display the contents.
    3. Click on the 'Quarantine' icon. The right side of the Norton AntiVirus window will now list the contents of your quarantine folder.
    4. Select the item you wish to remove and click on RED 'X' icon to delete it.
    5. This will open the 'Take Action' window. Click the 'Start Delete' button to remove the infected file from your computer.
    6. Repeat for any other quarantined files you want to remove.
    7. When you are done removing files, click the 'Exit' button in the bottom left hand corner of the Norton AntiVirus window.

Let me know how it goes?
