Serious system lag please help.

Unread postby tblotsky » July 17th, 2007, 10:09 pm

Please help. Serious system lag and unknown processes are running in the background and will not let me "end" them. Here is my HJT log. I am running Zone Alarm Security Suite and firewall now but I made the mistake of letting the subscription lapse and I think that is what got me. Thank you in advance.

Hi tblotsky,
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from here
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run CCleaner Cleaning Scan. This will remove all Temp files, cookies, and Internet History.
If it's not already running, Start CCleaner.
Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download Blacklight Beta from here:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/fsbl.exe
* Download fsbl.exe and save it to C:\
Go to Start, Run, copy in the following text, and press Enter:
C:\fsbl.exe /expert
(space between fsbl.exe and /expert)

Accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked.
Click > scan, Then > next
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose Rename if something was found!
There will also be a log in C:\ with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

Thanks askey127.

I ran the C Cleaner and noticed some improvement. I then downloaded and ran the FBL application but there was not option to "leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked". I selected scan. It scanned my machine and found "no hidden items". Is there anything else you can do?

Thanks again.

tblotsky,
-------------------------------------------------
Go to Start, My Computer and right mouseclick on the C:\ Drive
Choose Properties and note down how much Used Space and Free Space.
Then Uncheck the box labeled Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching
When it asks if you want this to apply to all files and folders, answer Yes/OK.
Let me know how it goes, and what you get for Used and Free space.

Indexing was disabled. It asked about C: only or C: and subfolders. I chose the latter and it errored out on C\Program files\adobe\Acrobat 7.0\activex and several adobe folders. Access is denied it said. I am signed in as an administrator. I just ignored these errors and continued. Looks like this will take a bit so I will get back to you later on he results.
