Hi There

This is the first time I have used your forum so I hope this is OK.
A virus called JimButt, I believe, has hijacked my browser. I also get a pop-up advert for spyware removal and a window message informing me that I have a Spy Virus and private information is being accessed via ports 8080 & 3128.

Spy Sweeper identifies the problem and appears to remove it but it always returns. The support service/team at Spy Sweeper have been very helpful but we have failed to eradicate the problem (this could be not doing something right!)

Please see log below.

Regards
SVLA

SVLA,

Do you use Energis UK for your Internet Service Provider? If not, who?
Please let me know as part of your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. In addition, if you have Windows XP, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable SpySweeper
- Open it, Click Options over on the left, then Program options
- Uncheck load at windows startup.
- Over to the left, Click shields and Uncheck all there.
- Uncheck home page shield.
- Uncheck automatically restore default without notification.
(Reverse this process after your malware removal is complete).
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download a-squared free from here. Install and update. Do Not Install Background Guard as it may interfere with our fix.
Run it to scan all your drives and fix whatever it finds.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and install CCleaner from here.
Don't run CCleaner yet.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start,Settings,Control Panel or Start,Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight the following entries (if they exist) and choose Remove :

EnergyPlugIn

-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(The Logitech Messenger and Dr Speedtouch are legit programs, but don't have to run at startup. Also, some of these lines may be missing due to other actions)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EnergyPlugIn] C:\Program Files\EnergyPlugIn\EnergyPlugin.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [STManager] "C:\Program Files\SpeedTouch\Dr SpeedTouch\drst.exe" -b
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.morwillsearch.com
O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} (Web P2P Installer) -

If you don't want your start page set to wanadoo.co.uk, then check this line also:
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.wanadoo.co.uk
Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
File and Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer, Find and Delete this folder, if present:

C:\Program Files\EnergyPlugIn\

Note if you cannot delete it.
You may have to delete all the underlying files and folders before a target folder can be deleted.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run CCleaner. Choose the Windows tab. Check everything EXCEPT be sure the Advanced part of the menu is all Unchecked. Choose Analyze. Let the Analyze portion finish. In heavily junk-laden older machines it could take up to 15 minutes. Then choose Run Cleaner. When cleaning is finished, click Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File. When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the name of your ISP.

SVLA,

In that case, when you follow my instructions, DO NOT check the O14 line in HijackThis before you Fix Checked. That would remove Wanadoo from your start page.
Let me know whenever the fixes are complete.

Jim but

Unread postby SVLA » June 29th, 2005, 4:37 pm

Hi askey127

It has worked. Thank you very much. Jimbut appears to have been eradicated. (along with the Wanado home page but never mind) :D Do you consider it is worth subscribing to A-squared etc. Any further advice will be much heeded!

In addition, how does the forum work? Who compensates you for your time/knowledge?

Regards

SVLA,

Glad to help.
There are one or two things I would suggest to protect your machine from any malware in the future:
You already have good antivirus and the a-squared trojan and worm protection..
Yes, I do think the paid version of either a-squared or Trojan Hunter is worth it.. each person has to decide on their own.

While you are on the Wanadoo web site, you can set your home page in IE by choosing Tools, Internet Options, General Tab, choose Current.
-----------------------------------------------------------
A general article on anti-malware products with links to programs can be found here: Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

Disable and Enable WinXP System Restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files. You will also lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
After it Reboots:
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
This disable/re-enable sequence is not to be done regularly, but only once , directly after removal of a malware infection.

Secure your Internet Explorer
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to - Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to - Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Install SpywareGuard. It runs in the background, like your Anti-Virus program, to stop Browser Helper Objects (BHO's) from installing. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

Install Service Pack 2
SP2 installs a large number of security patches, along with a default firewall. It can detect and work with any firewall you already have. If you have cable or DSL, you can download it from Windows Updates here: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/windowsxp/choose.mspx
