History: -
I have run spybot, and "Fixed" 29 items mainly tracking cookies & rebooted

Then ran AdAware, found 65 items again tracking cookies, but got scared by the quantity! so I quarentined these! then rebooted.

Again ran spybot which found 2 items,"Avenue A Inc", and "Double Click". opted to "Fix" these, and rebooted.

Again ran spybot which then came up clean!

Since then i have been advised to use hjt, it took only 7seconds to produce this log, so I hope it isn't garbage!
Look forward to your expert help and trust the above is of assistance.

Your log is clean apart from a couple of orphaned entries (which we'll deal with later) and the MBS software. I need to identify the MBS files:

Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply.
Note: Apart from producing the reports, the scanner will also:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • run HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

----------------------------------------

Please post the Deckard's reports (main.txt and the extra.txt) as a reply to this post (use the postreply button).

Beynac.
Thanks for your lightning speed, I've got Hijack this open, and the log file open,
Since they are both now resident in My Docs, can I now close these windows to run This new programme once I've downloaded it.
also can I delete the Hijack this Zip file from my desktop?
thanks.

You can close HijackThis and the logfile and delete the HijackThis zip file. Run the Deckard's Scanner in accordance with my instructions and post the log files.

If you have any other questions, stop and ask.

Re: - above post, not sufficiently clear.

My reference to the"Log File" refers to the info as posted above.
My reference to hijackthis, refers to the scan results, with the check boxes against each item, and the "Scan n' fix stuff" and "Other stuff" boxes and buttons at the bottomof the window.
My fear is that if I close this window, I don't know how to resurect it!!

The log file is saved on your computer, but we won't need that one again. You can close the program HijackThis ("scan results, with the check boxes against each item, and the "Scan n' fix stuff" and "Other stuff" boxes and buttons at the bottomof the window. "). You will need to run the program again, but the Deckard Scanner will place a shortcut on your desktop for you. This will make it easy to run the program next time you need it.

Don't worry about this. We will take it one step at a time. Always stop and ask if you're not sure.

Hope this is right!

Perfect! Well done. :)

My problem is that the files didn't show. This is either because they were not created recently, are hidden or have already been deleted. Let's run a program to look for the known MBS files and delete them if found. But first, we need to 'fix' some lines in HijackThis. Did Deckard's Scanner put a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop? If not, you need to create one. Right-click anywhere on your desktop. Select New and then Shortcut. Copy/paste the following into the textbox: C:\Documents and Settings\Geoff Vost\My Documents\highjackthis\HijackThis.exe
and then click Next and then click Finish. Double-click on this shortcut to run HijackThis.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mbssm32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbssm32.exe

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked. You can now close HijackThis.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Download OTMoveIt by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.
C:\Windows\System32\mbsrm32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\mbssm32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\mbsmon32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\mbsreg32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ubsauthenticateaxc.ocx
C:\Windows\System32\ubsauthenticateaxc1.ocx
C:\Windows\System32\winregmon32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\winsysmon32.exe
C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files\MBSInstallerAXC.ocx

  • Click the Move It button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
  • A log - C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).
-----------------------------------------------------

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The OTMoveIt log
  • A new HijackThis log

My problem is that the files didn't show. This is either because they were not created recently, are hidden or have already been deleted.

3 or 4 days ago, I sought advice on PCA Helproom Forum ;-
http://pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/index.cfm?action=showthread&threadid=261874&forumid=1
and followed the advice of fhiufhyrefyer on the first page, dating back to November 06.
Like many others, I couldn't find the ActivX control in Explorer>tools>manage Add ons, but after date ordering the Sys 32 folder, there were six Files that I removed in Safe Mode, They were in the recycle bin, until I ran Deckard's Scan!
They were: -

winiconmon.ico.bak0 22KB BAKO File 27/05/2007 18:26
winiconmon.ico 22KB Icon 27/05/2007 18:26
UBSauthenticateAXC.ocx 1,210KB ActivX Control 27/05/2007 18:26
mbssm32.exe 577KB Application 27/05/2007 18:26
mbsrm32.exe 90KB Application 27/05/2007 18:26
My Sex World.ico 22KB Icon 27/05/2007 18:26

Could these be what you are looking for?

During my multiple scanning with Spybot and AdAware today, Spybot found another MBS File, but I didn't make a note of it, it may have been
MBS Sexxxpassport
It was definately Sexxxpassport, but I can't be sure about the file type size or date, as it only showed up in the Spybot scan log among other files and cookies.
Scrub that, I've found a printout of the Log, as follows : -

MBSSexxxpassport: Class ID (Registery key, nothing done) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D2FAC024-92C0-42E5-A75B-7B4E3915CC50}

Can't give the date and time for that one, but I guess it's the same as the others, but it wasn't in SYS32 folder, and I wouldn't go into the registry without someone holding my hand!!!

Deckard's Scanner didn't put a shortcut on the desktop, but it put asecond copy of the exe file into the folder that I had made for the first one!
Should I delete one of them?
Do I need a shortcut? or can I run it from the folder?

Path : - C:\Documents and Settings\Geoff Vost\My documents\highjackthis

02:30 now, so I'll create the shortcut and maybe you can advise re the above tomorrow.
I may as well carry on , then I can get to bed before the sun comes up, and you will have the data you need for your next session.

OTMoveIt
When I clicked the "Move It" button, I receive an Error window (Big red blob with an X on it) Saying : -
""Cannot Create File: - C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\06092007-025725.log."

Not that it is any help, I copied and pasted the content of the Righthand window, just in case it was any diferent from the Left hand one, but it's not!

Good morning.

I hope you've recovered from all the hard work last night! :)

There's quite a bit to do in this post, but take it step-by-step. If you have any problems or questions, stop and ask.

The files which you deleted were the ones which would have shown up in the Deckard scan. The text from OTMoveIt shows that the main ones are definitely not there any more (don't worry about that error message). It's good news that they have been cleared from the recycle bin.

Deckard's Scanner didn't put a shortcut on the desktop, but it put asecond copy of the exe file into the folder that I had made for the first one!
Should I delete one of them?

Some malware hides things from HijackThis. Renaming the program can fool the 'nasty' into revealing itself. This is why Deckard creates a new, renamed copy in the same folder as the original. You can delete this if you wish. I take it that you have now created a shortcut - it makes things a lot easier! :)

-------------------------------------------------

You appear to have missed my instructions for the HijackThis 'fix'. This will remove the startup entry for MBS from your registry (and a couple of orphaned BHOs). It obviously can't actually start the program as the file has been deleted. However, we do need to remove it.

------------------------------------------------

Backup the Windows Registry

We need to remove the registry item that Spybot found. Before we do that, we need to backup your registry.

  • Download Erunt to your desktop from here
  • Double-click on the file to install the program
  • Untick the NTREGOPT desktop shortcut option
  • Click No when you get the option to run Erunt at Windows startup.
  • During the installation, tick Launch Erunt
  • Accept the defaults for running a backup
  • Erunt will then backup your registry
------------------------------------------

Edit the Windows Registry

It's very important that this is done correctly. Please double-check everything. Stop and ask if you are unsure of anything.

Select the contents of the Code Box below and copy/paste into Notepad

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D2FAC024-92C0-42E5-A75B-7B4E3915CC50}]

  • Make sure that Word Wrap is turned off in Notepad - (click the Format menu and uncheck Word Wrap)
  • Click Save As on the File menu and name the file fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • Save the file on your desktop
  • Close Notepad and make sure that all other windows are closed
  • Important:
    • Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
    • Make sure there is one blank line at the end of the file
    • Make sure that you have copied all of the text (e.g. don't miss the first 'R')
  • Double-click on the fix.reg file
  • When it prompts to merge, click Yes
----------------------------------------------------

Please post a new HijackThis log.

Sorry I have not been able to get back, beset by friends who seem to have Radar that informs them when I'm least likely to welcome a visit!!
Came Knocking at 09:30, I was still asleep!
Ah well,
I've read the hjt log that I posted last night, and see what you mean. However, I did follow your instructions, and the three Items appeared and I checked them, and clicked "Fix", so I don't know what has happened.
Should I have run hjt again after the "Fix", to obtain a new log?
'cos I didn't! I went straight on to OTMove.
Just reading my print off of your 9th June post at 12:10 am

Please post as a reply to this thread:

The OTMoveIt log

A new HijackThis log

The second item I took to be the newly created log when I "Fixed" the files in question!
Please let me know if I should do another hjt scan and post you the log before we continue with today's tasks.

Regarding the extra hjt exe file, I'll leave it, no point disturbing that which works!

Hi. Yes, I did mean for you to run a new HijackThis log. As you have 'fixed' the items, carry on from: Backup the Windows Registry . Please run a new HijackThis scan and post the log, after you have finished the two Registry steps.
