Search Engine Annoyance...

Unread postby Koblakai » May 14th, 2007, 6:54 am

right, so i can search, but sometimes it redirects me to these random sites.... http://www.casinocaeser.com being one of them.... well, i looked it up and people were saying "download this...." to get rid of it, so i did, well...

avg... crashes, spybot... crashes, the trend micro online thing... crashes, the free download for trend micro... doesn't see anything wrong although it constantly warns me when i use google, and trojanhunter... errors and crashes.

basically, i have no clue what's wrong, so here i am, on my last hope (wanted to avoid this cus all the lists and things to do look so daunting)

i followed a hijackthis thing from another thread....

Hi Koblakai,

Welcome to the MalWare Removal forums! I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  2. Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  3. Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly
-------------------------------------------------------------

Your log shows two anit-virus programs Norton and Trend Micro Internet Security 2007.

If you have uninstalled norton let me know. It is known for not uninstalling correctly?

We will need to take care of this first.

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two or more anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. They can conflict with each other which leaves you open to infection.

ok, norton was installed, but i had to pay for it >.< so i quit using it and uninstalled it, i think, heh, and trend was one of the things i tried to get rid of the malware.

i had a fiddle around with the computer and think i got rid of the malware, as my search engine now functions properly, but i would like to make sure it is all sorted out and that nothing is left as im not entirely sure.

Hi Koblakai,

Your HJT log shows leftovers of norton please do the following and then we need to check for leftovers of infections.

First we need to disable programs that can block removal of files.

Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable SpySweeper:

  • Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
  • Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck everything there.
  • Uncheck "home page shield".
  • Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
  • Exit the program.
----------------------------

Disable Trojan Hunter Guard
Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a light blue magnifying glass icon with a red handle. Right click it and select Settings. Uncheck Load at startup and Enabled.

----------------------------

Disable program can interfer (block removal of infection) with HJT fix.
Open AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
  • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 Tray Icon and choose Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

------------------------------------------------------------

Make sure to check for and remove any Norton and Symantec program listed

Add/Remove Programs
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following:

    Norton
    Symantec

You will need to reboot computer to complete uninstall.
-----------------------------------------

Now this is next:

To uninstall Norton go to HERE downloading the Removal Tool to your computer.
Follow Step 1 and 2.

Make sure to reboot computer when done running removal tool.

Post in your next repy:
New HJT log for me to check.

Hi Koblakai,

Thanks for posting log. Now your log shows you do not have any Anti-virus/firewall program installed you must have one.

You can only run one virus program at a time running two or more with cause conflicts in programs and computer instablity.
If you already have one just let me know. Then we can continue. If you do not have one you can choose from this list.

Here are Anti-Virus programs you can choose from these do not came with firewalls you will have to choose a firewall to go with it.
(free for personal use only available)

link to one AVG Anti-Virus (free for personal use only available)

link to second avast! antivirus home edition (free for personal use only)

link to third AntiVir by Avira

Here are some you can choose from
Only run one firewall program.

Firewall protection programs: (free for personal use only available)

Link to one Jetico Personal Firewall

Link to second Comodo Firewall

Link to third ZoneAlarm Firewall

Please post a new HJT log when decided.

I am not a gamer so I don't know if a firewall slows down playing games but I do know if you are on the internet without a firewall you are wide open to infections and there are some bad ones out there that could infect your computer so bad that you would have to reformat. You won't catch me on the internet without an update firewall that is for sure.

Hello Koblakai,

no, im good thanx got avg, and firewalled (one on my router, apparently)

That is your choice, but unless I am mistaken from what I have been reading router firewalls work like windows firewall. They block incoming, but not outgoing. Which means if infections gets in(on your computer) then it can phone home(outgoing) to cause more damage.

Your version of Java is now outdated. Java vulnerabilites are commonly exploited by viruses. You need to update.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u 1".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Click Start then Control Panel > then Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Remove any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed to complete uninstall.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

-----------------------------------------------------

These simple steps can help keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  2. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  5. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  6. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  7. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  9. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

May your God go with you..
