I logged onto the twins account and ran hijackthis and saved the file to their desktop. I tried to make a copy of it on the root of C: but it denied me access to the file (in use or protected i think it said) so I logged off and then back onto my xp account.
I did the repair and it seems to have cured the speed problem. My XP account seems alot faster but i can't find the hijack this log file. This is where it gets strange.

C:\Documents and Settings contains the folders:
Administator, All Users, Girls, Janet and Owner. Plus hidden folders: Default User, Local Service and Network Service. The one titled Girls seems to have all my stuff in it. The desktop folder in it contains all the stuff on my desktop but none of the folders contains a desktop folder with the twins stuff in it (including the hijackthis log). In fact the one titled Janet
won't let me in. It says access denied when i try to double click on it. If i hover the mouse over it, it says it's empty anyway.

Do you think it would be a good idea to delete all the user profiles on this machine and start again? If so, can I delete my own as well?

I've included another hijack this log done on my xp account if it's any help. When i've posted this, i'll try to do a scan on the twins account agin and try to save it somewhere I can find it when i log back on my account.

Janet.

OMG !!!!!

I forgot about all the error messages that came up when i tried to run HJT on the twins account. first it said it looked like i was tring to run it from a cd or locked floppy so copied hjt.exe to the desktop and it ran ok. then click on sacn and log but another error popped up about system denied access to HOSTS file. if hijacked domains are in this file, hjt mat NOT be able to fix this. If so, need to edit file yourself by Start Run then type
notepad "C\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts"

Then to find lines hjt reports and delete them. Save file as "hosts" and reboot.

I then clicked on OK, it carried on with the scan but came up with another error but i clicked ok by mistake and it went. It mentioned something about emailing someone with some details (sorry).

After all that, i tried saving the hjt log file but it would only let me save it in the twins account folders and denied me acces to all other folders including C: root. I saved it in their My Doc folder, but now I'm back on my account, it doesn't exist. I've tried doing a windows search for it looking in all hidden folder etc and it still doesn't show up.

It's baffled me, Janet.

Let's try to find out exactly what users you have, and where.

Some questions:
  • What users are shown on your Windows logon screen?
  • Which of these do you usually log on to?
  • Click on Start then My Computer. What is shown under Files Stored on This Computer?
  • Open Control Panel and select User Accounts. What users are shown? What type are they (e.g. Administrator)?
-------------------------------------------------------------

File2Text by Jahewi

Log on to your normal user account (as above). Open Notepad and save the document as Desktops.txt. Download File2Text by Jahewi from here and save it to your desktop. Double-click on F2Ts.exe to start the program.
  • Paste C:\Documents and Settings\Girls\Desktop\ into the Path box
  • Click the Go button
  • Click the Select F2T - list button
  • Right-click on the selected text and select Copy
  • Paste the text into Desktops.txt in Notepad
  • Click on the Clear button (top right)
  • Click on the Clear F2T - list button (bottom left)
Repeat the above steps for the following (paste all of the results into the same document, leaving a couple of spaces between each):
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Janet\Desktop\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\
Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The contents of Desktops.txt
  • The answers to my questions.

HijackThis

Reboot the computer and log on as Girls. Run HijackThis and then connect to the internet and post the log here, while still logged on as Girls. If you still have problems with running the program, do what you did previously. The important thing is to get the log.
